Confederate motorcycles sold some? I saw one here in Utah 2 yrs ago at the Bonneville salt flats for the 2009 bubs land speed races. It was a b120 wraith. I actually took a picture of it because it was so odd looking and had lots of carbon fiber. I didn't like how some of the exhaust was routed through the frame of the bike. But it was wild looking and the seat was really a strange one too.

Maybe we're hung up on what 'street legal' is. To me, street legal means I can get it licensed and ride it on the street (legally) as manufactured. To suggest 'street legal' means EPA 50-state compliant is an entirely different ballgame. Were the Big Dog, 100+ cu.in. mills with straight pipes 'street legal'? - apparently so. I personally have built three bikes from scratch that will not meet EPA noise or emissions standards, but are certainly street legal. Just sayin'.

I'm pretty sure Confederate, Bourget, and others are selling bikes that are being legally ridden on the street, so I'm not sure what the point of the criticism of that aspect of their bikes is.

Morgan, the Brit car company, has re-introduced their 3-wheeler cycle car, a line they built and sold from the early 1900s to about 1948 or so.

Are you serious?!?! Man, those are some of my favorite cars ever! I gotta go look that up....

We saw several Hellcats on a trip out west a few years ago. Seems to me it was near Gateway, CO. They were on the roll but had a distinct rumble when they passed us.

When shopping for a new scooter last fall I sat on one of the new Honda choppers. The bike felt really good when I pulled it off the stand. The dealer was happy to let me ride but since we were shopping for a touring bike I got the rolleyes from Kim and moved on. ; )

A friend who used to attend Big Jim's Ride on a regular basis had a Big Dog Ridgeback. He paid over $30K out the door from the dealer in Columbus, OH. That dealer closed his doors shortly there after. He had several warranty issues that were never resolved. He finally sold it for a huge loss.

Me likes the Honda. The price is real and the bike handles well from the ride reports I've read with none of the falling apart issues known to exist in the after-Harley market.

Of the Japanese choppers, I prefer the Star Raider. But that's like picking my favorite communicable disease, so...

(PS: It's not the "Japanese" part I find distasteful... it's the "Chopper" part)

I agree with Stirz - at least in NC street legal means headlights, tail light, and at least one mirror. Thats it.

As for the Bougets page - jesus that thing is a nightmare. You click on the link posted on page one and it takes you to a page a mile long. And then at the bottom it says 'enter site' WTF was I doing the last five minutes with all the stuff on the main page

JB,

>>> I got the rolleyes from Kim and moved on.

What? When did you shed your rebellious, bad-boy ways? This requires deep contemplation and a total re-evaluation of who I look up to in this world. Just the other day, Michele told me that I should do the laundry, and I thought "no way; what would JB think?"

The good news is that apparently if you wash a red t-shirt along with a white silk blouse, the result is unsatisfactory enough to justify termination of wash duties.

a game we have all played.... : )

I hated to see Easyrider in Columbus shut down. I bought my first Ironhead sporty there... not the type of 2 wheel transportation I would choose today... But I wish I still had that bike
Easyrider was a fun place to have lunch... a drink... see some crazy bikes that I could never afford... or really want. but I liked looking at them FO SHO.... and for some reason there was always scantily clad women folk walking around

No fear Blake my friend. I've already purchased the Cross Country so that is base covered and Kim is satisfied. I'd love to show you what's on the lift table in the shop but it's not quite ready(No, it's not a bastardized Buell chopper). But hell I may even get a tattoo.... NOT! ; )

BTW, I do laundry. Oh, the shame of admission!

I **think** you are right but I need to resolve some discrepancies before submitting my report.

>>>>Maybe we're hung up on what 'street legal' is.

Not in the least. THAT part I . . . KNOW. GA, and all states by the way, has no say in what is legal . . they are limited to what you can register.

I suspect they operate on a small manufacturer (think "hobby") exemption and cater to a fairly well heeled group.

Thanks all for your help.

Court, I believe you're on the right track. Big Dog HAD to start making their bikes EPA-compliant because they started producing too many bikes per year to be considered a "hobby."

As to the Bourget question, I saw this blurb on a motorcycle blog. As far as I know it is true:

"Living in Arizona, I have not seen Roger Bourget with the company outings in over 1 1/2 yrs. Was at Arizona Bike Week last week, had a truck at the show, saw only workers there.
I can’t confirm his whereabouts, other than he supposedely opened/opening a bar.restaurant in Colorado with his new wife? but his ex-wife pretty much is the spokesperson/owner of the business. She makes appearances around the valley, with other custom builders like Jim Nasi, John Shoppe."

I've been following the Confederate story for a while. Their motto is "The Art of Rebellion" Key word, "Art". It ain't cheap. That said, their new bike, which is being featured on the Facebook page, was touted as "accessible to the upper range Harley buyer". I think the new CX132 Hellcat starts at around $45K. The B120 Wraith is pretty darn cool, with its CF (fuel in frame) backbone and massive CF front forks. It's also pretty small. The P120 Fighter is like something SkyNet designed to ferry the Terminator around. Each bike IMO is exquisitely designed and the parts look like they go together like a Swiss watch. These are definitely not your cookie cutter "choppers". They apparently send a lot of their bikes to super rich foreigners (princes, sheiks, etc.). The CX132 Hellcat, featured on FB has been pretty cool to watch develop. Some pricey looking Rizoma stuff on it, too...

Ftd,

Thanks for the info. I was surprised to see Brigette Bourget listed as owner and founder on the website and wondered where Roger was, even though searching Roger Bourget on Google produced a link to http://www.bourgets.com/ with no mention of Roger to be found anywhere.

I learned something today!

Court - you probably know the answer here. (and sorry to disagree, but as far as I'm concerned if it's legal to register and ride on the street, no matter how you parse it, it is 'street legal' in the commonly understood sense).

I think you can build up to 50 per year and get the small manufacturer exemptions but I have not researched it. I seem to remember that is what did JJ in - he got too popular and built too many bikes. It caught up with him (someone told me that Sandy covered the fine, but that's only what a guy who knows a guy told me).

Too bad about Roger - he must have really stepped in the poo to lose his company, his name and not sure what else - Daaaang!

Roger never seemed the same after Autumn passed away and rightfully so. I had a BBW built in 1997 (which I still own and ride weekly) and even then I dealt with Brigitte probably 90% of the time. Was sort of weird but Roger had no interest in the business end of things. His main interest was high perf. off shore boats of all things.

"Cap" Lillard who used to be on this board,
road a Confederate among other cool bikes.

A couple of years ago at TWO,a rub tried to sell me his Hellcat.Because his wife said he
bought the bike with her new pool money.
He was wearing a windbreaker over an Izod shirt, khakis and loafers with no socks, riding
the Hellcat.

Ok, so who is actually left?
What about Ecosse Motor works? Their bikes look like a slightly saner take on the Confederate model.

No, more like a faux pas on my part. I forgot about Autumn and was out of line.

As far as that guy in East Troy, my feeling is that the poo got thrown at HIM. Luckily it seems he managed to sift through and retrieve the pearls.

Ecosse seams to be still around the web site hasn't been up dated lately but I have found references to 2011 bikes. Kind of funny that the two of the few left are Confederate and Ecosse, they may use v-twins but there only clones of Harleys we wished they would have built.
The only other clone I could find was Big Bare Choppers in the Cycle World buyers guide.

I know that is why I said Ecosse hasn't updated their website, just checked sometime in 2009, but then the Erik Buell Racing site hasn't been updated since then either. I found other references on the web that 2011 bikes were for sale though not from the manufacture. Of course a small company would not have to sell very many $200,000 Titanium Heretics to be a viable company.

I rode one of the Big Dogs. It was horrible. The huge rear tire kept it from turning. It vibrated a lot and didn't do much.

there used to be a ton of made in america bikes, during the chopper craze. They used to be listed in thunder press each month.

I too have sat on some of these custom choppers. Just really feel crude. Levers are extremely stiff. You can barely pull in the clutch levers. Yes, vibrate like crazy, and do not handle well.
