Anybody ride one, own one? I'm looking at picking one up. I was told to hold off for the 2012's, they're supposed to have the new Y frame, and be fuel injected. This thing has got me by the balls. I'll also get a set of supermoto wheels. How fun is that!?
I ride a lot of tight single track, and the stock sprockets made the gears way too tall! I switched to a 15 tooth front and 52 inch rear to slow it down and make it ridable in the tight stuff.
With the stock sprockets it would go about 12 mph in first gear at idle on flat ground. It would go over 100 mph in 6th gear! (GPS Verified at 108 mph)
With the new sprocket setup it goes 5 mph at idle. I have not checked the effect on top speed. This setup works great for me and requires no extra modification to fit.
Will you like the 530??? It depends on the type of riding you plan to do but the 530 should go like hell!!!
Just sold my 520. It was a totally tricked out bike with a 540 kit. It was by far the most incredible dirt bike I have ever ridden. If you like "too much power" and want "way too fast" then you are probably looking at the right bike. To be honest there were a more than a few times when I wished for a 400 or a 450 though. Some times it was just impossible to control it in certain conditions but if your going to spend most of your time on road I'd say go for it. What kind of riding or racing are you planning?
Mainly bombing around the city, jumping curbs etc...) There is a supermoto style track that I'm going to check out. During the winter I will stud up some tires and run on the ice. Trails up north, though I only plan to see them once or twice a year. I'll find other off road adventures thought. Pavement to dirt on any country road right?}
Sure did, be prepared to do a ton of crap to a brand new one before your ready to ride. the list goes on and on but right away get rid of the smog stuff, rejet the bike, and cut out the tube on the stock silencer. All stuff Dano can do for you or tell you how to since you know Mark and the boyz. Supermoto wheels are awesome but I opted for stock size set of extra wheels and tires cause you can swap in under 30 minutes.
Right on man. The stock silencer will be the first to go. Ross said that the new bikes are set up for CA reg, so the bikes are super lean. Dan would re-jet. I guess I need to do some homework on this bike, mods and all. To be honest, I don't know shit about the bike. I'm hoping the 2012 are injected, if I can wait that long. I'm going to be contacting you if I get a 2011.
How much money did you save by running the same sized wheels? Ive got a buddy that's into this shit pretty hard. He's got me at 3-4k for moto wheels, rotors, brakes, and tires.
No problem, ask away everyones got there opinions you never know what you'll find out. The brand new bike will not even run until its jetted, it was backfiring and popping so bad it was rediculously lean. I bought the jet kit, the fan kit(dumped in engine ice), cut out the exhaust tube, and removed all the smog stuff before i even got to ride it. Then added all the guards and replaced the horrible stock battery ect ect on and on just like any other toy right.....
I did the whole set of rims/tires/tubes/brake discs/speedo magnet/sproket and rim locks for around 1000 bucks. That way all I do is pop off my axles and chain and slide the other set in place, no brake caliper relocation or anything. Yes they are alot skinnier than your buddies cool sumo setup but I just wanted cheap n easy for around town not the track.
Boney95 If you are mostly going to street ride or even if you are going to ride wide trails, like ATV trails, the 530 will be a fun bike and it will be fast!
If you are going to ride tight, single track trails the 530 will be a hand full, especially with the stock sprocket setup.
About KTMtalk... Yea the e-mail thing is supposed to keep Trolls out I think. It is by far the most useful website for KTM's!
This is an example of the off road riding on single track that I do.
I ride offroad with a buddy that has (I think) a 520... the more MX version, not the enduro version.
Stupid excess for sure, and there is something to be said for that.
Research how to change the oil first. I think it involves pulling the engine, or mounting the entire bike in a giant rotisserie.
And kickstarting that thing after stalling it in a deep mud bog ain't pretty.
And by the end of our first ride, he had overheated it once (his version had no external coolant catch tank), and had two leaking fork seals.
In fairness, he bought it used, and stuff happens...
Just know you have signed up to date a smoking hot but a little bit psycho supermodel. And really really enjoy the good times now, because there may be dark moments ahead.
Me, I'm loving my rebuilt little utility KDX-200. Simple, cheap, light, and powerful enough.
In my first Harescramble race I overheated and didn't finish. I think it was the combination of 90+ degree day, stock anti-freeze, and a first gear that was too fast.
I now run "Engine Ice" in all my dirt bikes. I have not overheated since I switched to Engine Ice. This stuff is amazing!!! http://www.engineice.com/ I highly recommend it.
Theilman is awesome we do that yearly also. Yep that bike does get heavy after a single track day , mine has 50 tooth instead of stock sproket, also has the overflow catch can, and a fan kit to keep her cool. You have to man up to kick start that thing for sure thats why i got rid of that horrible stock battery and put in a turntech. You can hold the starter down all day and not kill that battery. Oil change is two nuts under the engine and oil filter on the side case, think its suggested every 10-15 hours. Like he said search on ktmtalk and you can see most all the mods and how to do them all.
Haus If you are coming up to ride Theilman this spring let me know! We could save you a camp site near ours! I am a member of the Golden Eagles motorcycle club, we organize the event. http://www.goldeneaglesmc.org/
So which bike gets the most seat time? The XB or the Super Poop? I'm just curious to see how you like the SD because I almost bought one. I ended up discovering and getting the 1125r after KTM delayed the US release of the SD.
The profile pic is my (at the time) 15 year old on his sx125 flying like a bird while flippin the bird.
a buddie that i go ridding with (single track) has a 525 EXC, that bike is damn fast and is a hand full in the tight stuff. to my knowledge has never had any problem with over heating on it. only issues i know that he has had is the rear wheel bearings failed on it while we were about 80 miles from civilization. he also had some electrical lighting issues, headlights would get real dim at idle, ended up being a bad ground to the frame. besides that its a great bike, i would get one if i didnt love 2 strokes so darn much.
Sounds like the 530 is a solid choice. Thanks for the feedback guys!
Dalton, I crashed my XB last summer and totaled her out. It was a sad sad day for me. But I believe things happen for a reason. The SD is an awesome bike. Not to dis the Buell, but its a better bike all around. If you think your Buell is a wheelie machine, try the SD. Over the past winter I've done a bunch of mods, mainly an open intake/air box and a PCIII. She goes on the dyno at the end of the month for a custom map. Can't wait for that! You can't go wrong with any V Twin.
