ya don't even need the speedo. Take another look. That speedo is almost as big as the steering wheel, even though it's off to the side, it's still IN YOUR FACE.
Ive got a Mini Cooper S the supercharged and 6 speed. Ive got over 70000 miles on it now and no problems. Im not real sure how anyone could say they handle bad, because i can hang with any car out there and have most of them even a miata, who we all know is infamous for great handling. Anyway I love mine and everyone who had driven it is super amazed at the power and handling. I looked at all the other compact sports cars, Toyota, Mazda and Honda and I promise the Mini is much better put together. The Mini is like the xb it turns heads all the time, and is always good for a conversation at a gas station. The only other car I would pick over my Mini would be a WRX or Evo, but they dont get 30 plus mile to the gallon either. I dont think you will be disappointed. I liked mine so much that I bought my wife the new Countryman S All4.
Crackhead- my cobalt has been the best, most problem free car I've owned, domestic or otherwise. I also kept it the longest and put the most miles on it. I worked in a garage for a long time. For every breakdown story you have, I have one for a Toyota that needed an engine at 60k. They ALL break.
And no one says the Mini handles bad - it's just that there's a lot of competition now, and some better values.
Abe, who was at Buell, has had a couple Minis and was in live with thefar and the engineering.
Cool part ...... And I confess I don't need 300+ HP in my daily driver. My average speed .... On my commute today.... Was 20.4.
I like 40mpg and the ability 2 buy 2 of them, with sun roof, heated leather seats, full Bluetooth sync and 380w sound system with built in subwoofer for half the price ( roughly... I paid about 15k for the 2010) of everything mentioned above.
I need " great" handling like a kick in the shins.
My first car back in '72 was a '67 Cooper S 1275 cc engine and had Hydro-Stalastic(spl) suspension. Was a hoot to drive, think big go kart,at the time I gave the 2002 owners fits in the Northern Va. area. Parts for it back then were not cheap and the owner of the local Bap/G/ON got rich off me.
Badlionsfan, I love the Mini's handling. They can get pricey to fix though since the BMW dealers are all pushing $120/hr+ in labor, but are overall solid cars.
The S responds well to mods if the bug gets you.
In this category, I'd like to throw up a suggestion for the Audi A3 or VW GTI/R32 cars.
Then again Court I have it all wrapped into one. I have a corner carver, the power of many performance cars of twice its price. I also have AWD so winters are a dream come true. The WRX is a great package. So when I need to haul something I have my Durango that I also can carry 8 adults without issue. So this brings me to this.My Wife drives the Durango I drive the WRX daily. Your wife must drive something. You also own a Ford 150 that you say you'll keep. You have the focus for your daily. And then to top it off you have the Porsche. I don't know about you but it sounds like you have 4 cars to put gas in,insure, and maintain. I gotta feeling I'm driving cheaper.
Chatted with a guy at the gas station last night with an 04 mini S, supercharged 6 speed. He's had since new, 147k miles now. Only issue out side of general maintenance stuff was a leak at the rear of the roof. Car was "way out of warranty" in his words. Dealer spent almost 3 weeks tracking down the source and fixing it. They didn't charge him and gave him a loner even tho he told them he didn't need it. Check mark on my list next to quality customer service.
I forgot to mention the Audi A3, that is a cool car. And yes Mini really knows how to take care of their customers. I dont care what anyone says it is not the #1car among gays, the Miata is...hahaha.
want a real gokart.... Austin Healey Bug eyed Sprite, with the monster 2.o conversion, scariest ride I have ever had; even with full safety of roll cage, helmet, and track aid crew on stand by.
I will admit that the Miata is a good car, I wanted one at one point because it was a reliable version of my first car, MGB roadster, Ive always had a thing for British cars. But everybody knows they sucked at making cars. But anyway back to the Miata, I wanted one really bad because I think a Ford 302 fits nicely in there. Ive only seen one and it was way coooool.
Wasn't my fault. The weather around here has been too poopy to ride, been working 6 nights a week saving up for the Bonneville so by the time Sunday comes I don't feel like doing anything remotely productive. Got bored, saw online they're open Sunday, so I figured what the hell. Might have to keep up the insane work schedule to make the Mini happen sooner than later.
I'm getting tempted to take one for a ride as well. It's a great looking car, everyone I know who has owned one absolutely loves it and it shares the attributes of fun, cheap and efficient.
Cheap? It may be fun but it certainly isn't cheap either compared to other specced small similar cars or in isolation. I am constantly shocked by the price of the Mini new and used (although used prices have taken a hit recently). I think they are shockingly overpriced, but maybe that is just me . With a starting price of over UK£18,000 (plus extras which add a LOT!) it is an expensive little car and at 48mpg not too efficient compared to tehrs either I'd wait for the Citroen DS3 to arrive in the US rather than buy a Mini (even if it is French!).
>>>still giddy from the 20 minute MINI Cooper S experience.
Precisely . . why it's on my list at the moment.
But . . my current list is REALLY weird and . . until I sort out what the heck it really is I want . . the good old, paid for, fuel guzzling F-150 is it.
Lots of options. . . but the Mini always, regardless of source, seems to get the "huge fun factor" reviews.
Few more thoughts from my test drive then extended inspection of the car.
Fit and finish, inside and out seemed to be top notch.
Though different than most and granted it could take some time getting used to, I liked the lay out of the dash controls.
These things are very well equipped standard, and I like that you can pick and chose options or buy option packages. When buying new, you can get the exact car you want, no compromises. When spending that type of money, it's the way it should be.
I don't think the ride is nearly as bumpy as some think.
I'm glad I took the ride when I did, cuz it's gonna take me a long time to figure out how I want it built.
If you get one and it rides a bit harsh, it may be the "run flat" tires. The boss' wifes car had them and when she replaced them with conventional tires it smoothed the ride some.
