This is not something I wanted to broadcast, but after seven months of interviews and heartache I'm reaching out to my fellow BWB members to see if anyone has a lead on a job in the east/central Florida area. I live in Merritt Island (near Cocoa Beach) which is about an hour east of Orlando. My previous Senior Director position with Barnie's Coffee & Tea Company was eliminated effective 9/1/10 due to downsizing. I worked for Burger King Corporation for 15 years before my nearly 7 year stint with Barnie's. Most recently I was running the distribution center, mail order department and call center for Barnie's. Any thoughts or suggestions would be greatly appreciated. I didn't sweat it once I left Barnie's thinking it would take me a month or two to find another job. I never dreamed it would be such a difficult prospect. Thank you all! |

Good luck, buddy... Got news that my GF received a whopping $.18/hr raise today!! I'm heading to get that celebratory bottle of Dom Perignon right now... Oh well- that's better than nothing, but geez! With her help, I'm paying the bills and mortgage working as a waiter- however, despite my years of training and consummate skill in most all areas of a restaurant, I find it less likely now than ever to get a proper, average 15% tip. Times are tough, but I do enjoy every day that I can- especially the sunny, warm days here lately... Once again, good luck, and keep us posted on your progress... |

I'm heading to get that celebratory bottle of Dom Perignon right now Careful, you may end up going backwards. But like you said, a little bit is better than nada. $.18 x 2080hrs = $375 Bottle of Dom $2,499

sayit the sad reality is that the .18 probably cost the employer .68 |

Good point, the .68 is probably a little steep, but I bet .30 isn't out of the question. OT: iride; I'll look around and see if I can find anything that looks like it is in your area. I have a couple buddies in that part of the state.... GL |

I know whatyour going through Iride I had to lay off office staff the overhead costs were too high. Work is getting better but until Obamacare gets stopped permanantly I cant hire any one. The 50.5% SUR tax on benefits is too much to take a chance on If I charge it I dont get the job if I do and o care isnt stopped I cant pay the tax |

Thanks all. I guess maybe I just conduct myself based on a loftier standard than most of the prospective employers out there today. While I completely understand that there are literally thousands of applications for one job (and many applicants aren't even remotely qualified, but apply anyway), I truly believe that leaving someone hanging that you've thought enough to call for an interview is just wrong. I've traveled to Orlando and Daytona for interviews (an hour each way) and some for multiple interviews with the same company on different days and then had to call or e-mail the contact to find out if I'm still being considered only to be told I was not picked as a finalist or the job has been filled. I realize it's an employers market right now, but what has happened to common courtesy. You've asked me to come see you, so you must have thought enough of my qualifications to want to sit down with me. I showed up on time for our meeting. I was told I would be contacted with a decision whether it be positive or negative once our interview was over. I know, I know....I shouldn't be complaining. I fully realize I'm one of the few that is actually getting called for interviews. But, I should think that a company would be concerned about how an individual views them in the interest of their possible business as a customer moving forward. I will flat out not spend my money at one c-store company thanks to the hoops I was asked to jump through during a two month interview process only to be offered a lesser position due to my "lack of experience in the industry". Was my resume' at all unclear about my previous experience? I've only had two jobs since graduating from college in 1987. Hmmmmm. |

I know its little solace right now (and wont pay the bills) but, in the long run, is a company/manager that acts like that one you would really want to work for? Some things that I've read or found to be true: + it is easier to find a job if you already have one, so take a job (any job) while you are looking for the one you really want +remember you are interviewing the company at the same time they are interviewing you +try not to seem desperate, even if you are |

"what has happened to common courtesy" It unfortunately has gone the way of the do do bird. My friend and former co-worker in HR was looking for a job for over 2 years. She is working now, but some of the stories she had regarding rude behavior by hiring managers towards her and other candidates was mind boggling. If we as HR professionals had behaved that way ourselves, or permitted our hiring managers to behave that way, we would have been fired. The world seems to have gotten meaner and more tactless. There's little regard that they are toying with people's lives and livelihoods. If they treat you like that before you get in the door, imagine how they will treat you when you are employed there. Hang in there, Irideabuell. The good news is most of my Central FL friends/former coworkers who were hit in this recession and want to be working are. The bad news is almost all have them have had to take steps back career-wise, and pay cuts. Good luck. BeLinda. |

I have always been Manufacturing either on the engineering side or management side and I have experienced some real piss poor attitudes from people in Human Resource departments. I attributed it to being I was applying for or I was in a position that paid more than the person In Human resources and they resented me for it. |

Thanks everyone. I've pretty much resigned myself to the fact that I'm going to have to start over to a certain extent. The caveat to that is I will work for a company doing a job I enjoy and can see myself making a career of. The c-store company I mentioned in my previous post is a classic example. I knew early on I probably wasn't going to enjoy that job and they helped make it an easy decision by showing their true colors in the end. I'm still positive and know something good will come along - it's, unfortunately, been later instead of sooner. |

"I have experienced some real piss poor attitudes from people in Human Resource departments." Yep, there are bad apples in every field. Being on the other side of the desk, I've encountered some pissy attitudes from professionals from all disciplines. If we were doing our jobs, their true colors were exposed before we brought them on payroll. Using the same logic that you don't want to work for a company that treats you poorly during the interview stage of the game, you don't want to hire someone who displays obnoxious behavior when you are setting up the interview/having the interview with them. Like a bad relationship that starts out with verbal abuse, it generally escalates/gets worse as time goes on. Then, when the hiring manager realizes they made a hiring mistake, whose problem does it become? HR's! I don't miss my HR job. |

speaking of jobs, i hope you get one, all my experience is in freightliner and other heavy truck work, and i could barely get an interview at a truck shop around here, i had not worked in 2 years, due to my wife being deployed and the outrageous cost of child care on Oahu, but today i started my new job, working for the local john Deere construction equipment company here, after a day it seems like its going to work out pretty good, keep your head up, something is bound to happen. |

Wish I could offer something for you. I just noticed how you mentioned you live in Merritt Island. I grew up and my parents still live in Cocoa. I do miss that place. Loved riding A1A from Cape Canaveral all the way down to Melbourne Beach at night just to see the night life and the beach side at night. Good times. Are there any of the Bike Nights still happening around that area still? |

Hey Cataract2...I've only seen some measure of Bike Night at the Hooter's here on MI. It's mostly young adults and I have yet to see anything other than metrics tuned to the max parked there. I will say that I've seen an increase in the number of Buells around. I've met one guy who lives in Cocoa with an 1125R. Followed another guy down S. Courtenay riding a Lightning as well as a couple of other miscellaneous spottings. I love living here and wouldn't trade it for anything - except for a beachside condo in the Caribbean somewhere. |
