Okay.. I research the helmets, go months looking at different styles to be sure it has all the gadgets to make my life a little easier.. Yet I wind up angry that it doesn't hold up to the talk. I love riding on semi cool days - problem - clouds, no clouds, clouds, no clouds, drizzle, no drizzle, etc... we've all been there- So I LOVE helmets with clear shields and flip down sunvisors built in - very convinient with on off clouds and day to night riding. Just in case my riding goes into the night from a bright sunny day I like the switchable shields from reflective sun visor to the clear as well So I wound up with the SCORPION EXO 1000 I got it for a screaming deal at Wild West Honda off of I-10 near Hwy 99 (they always hook people up with good deals just for asking - real friendly and best prices on tires btw) ANyWaY - I had the helmet 2 (two) days and with the weather playing games I opened the visor for air flow and had the sun shield down - I caught a couple of small bugs.. we're talking 'nat' size... They were at the lower portion of the visor but anoyingly within my view. So I gently (as gentle as you can be with gloves on) removed the bugs yet still saw a streak.. To my great excitement (lots of sarcasm) I had scratched my sun shield it two spots. I have dealt with it for nearly a year now, being sure to keep the outside full face visor down as much as possible or just my clear glasses on under all the shielding provided already. A few weeks ago I had to go to my clinicals an hour away and walked out to a foggy morning TIP for InvEntors here who have the time; a small 3" squeegie industrially stitched to the right side of the index finger on the left glove -Brilliant Idea!!! Removes moisture quickly and could even use to remove bugs Instead I was left to just using my finger as a squeegie. It did quite well, I was pleased.......til I had streaks that were annoying me the next day... Scratch scuffs - time for a new visor... I tried to clean the few bugs I caught yesterday off the visor... these bugs were painted on at at "least 80mph" and the instructions to clean visors say "soak and pat clean, do not rub or you will scratch the visor... do not use abrassive cleaners, etc" the bugs do not come off I can understand that rocks, sand, gravel, and surtain debree will wreck havick on a visor... however, it's 2011 and way past time to have a visor that is not scratch "resistant" (that they all lie about anyway), but "scratch PROOF/PROVEN" I heard rumor of the monochromatic or whatever its called that changes in sunlight and out of sunlight.. Im not sure if it does it fast enough for the Houston traffic yet PLEEEEEEEEEAASE where do I find visor shields to replace mine with that are TrULy scratch proof, OR do I have to sink a few hundred more on another helmet that lies I'm ready to glue on mini knobs to put tear offs on like we used to use on the dirt bike goggles Any and ALL links will be appreciated, Because I am the BING overload commercial - I get tossed around the internet like an idiot and never find what I am looking for Sorry if this was a long message... but it HAD to start solid |

An added note: I realize the helmets have special coating to allow them to be fog resistant - people have pointed this out for years, hiding behind that excuse, when in reality, The fog resistant visors on the many helmets I have tried work as well as the scratch resistant visors do in preventing scratches.... that'd be not at all.. I always wind up cracking open the visor to keep it from fogging at every stoplight. I'd have better luck using rainX anti fog ..but afraid the soft cloth would still scratch the inside of the visor AND I know the tear off idea sounds great to some, however, my wife pointed out that the poor drivers behind me may not be so happy when a sticky screen gets in their field of view / aka - sticks right smack in front of them on their windshield |

Polycarbonate is never going to be chip and scratch resistant. Period. Replace the visor not the helmet. Costs less. I would suggest using Novus or other brand of polycarbonate scratch remover. You can't prevent them, but you can reduce their impact. Scratches are the result of the trade off in cost and weight savings. The road is a hard and evil place fraught with danger. Pitting and scratches are evidence of the danger. You could always wear a 3/4 open face helmet and catch the gnats in the face. Your skin doesn't scratch (but it does hurt like a MOFO!). |

I know your pain. I bought a new reflective iridum blue shield for about $90 and within days scratched it up in my top bag when the protective bag cover it was in slipped off. Due to influences found here on BadWeB, I clean and coat my shields with Pledge furniture polish. I keep a small can of the orange flavored stuff in my bags with Bounty paper towels. Spray and let it's moisture soak in a minute before wiping, and the shields stay pretty good. It makes a wax like coating that keeps the new bugs from sticking, and the orange flavor smells pretty good. |

What I do to stop my visor from fogging up is put a little bit of dawn dish soap on a paper towel and put a small coating on the interior of the visor. It seams to work very well. I have tried to put rain-X on the exterior of the visor. That seams to help the bigs come off a little bit easier. |

The Shoei shields I use have been darn near scratch proof. They are not inexpensive though. Like ETennUly, I keep 'em waxed, but I use S100 Detail & Wax. |

Never use paper towels unless there is no other choice. Novus #1 cleaner sprayed on the shield and use a Photex Scanner Wipe which is extremely soft and no scratching to wipe it down, clean a dry portion to buff the Novus off. Helps prevent fogging, makes the bugs come off easier. http://www.baypressservices.com/acatalog/Photex_Sc anner_Wipes.html |

It already exists. My gloves have them on both thumbs. http://www.motorcycle-superstore.com/3/11/442/1401 5/ITEM/EXO2-StormShield-Heated-Gloves.aspx Also, if the anti fog thing isn't working on your Scorpion, contact them. While my 1000 isn't totally fogproof, it is at least 75% more fog resistant than the rest of my helmets. To get another 20% I spray on this Fog Off stuff that my Harley dealer sells. |

Anyone use the pinlock shields for fog prevention? |

I have Arai shields that I've had for over 15 years. Some probably have over 30,000 miles. Although the helmets have been retired I keep wearing them and keep the brand new shields for spares. They don't seem to fog too much but the shield has a fog resistant locking mechanism so you can vent them if foggy. |

Novus for scratches, Plexi-Brite spray for cleaning and general stick prevention. Don't know about the Pledge... may try it. They sell silicone wiper blades that slip over the thumb or fore-finger.. works with any glove, and are about 10 bucks for a three pack. Always carry a few with me... works wonders in the rain. Just wish they'd make a terry cloth or micro-fiber patch on the back of the thumb to clean bugs off before the become hardened. Have had some bug guts visibly damaged sheilds when left un wiped. Highly recommend the Fieldsheer visor pouches... they can't come off as the entry side corner flap is sewn down. Have had two for a couple of years, work great. |

PinLocks ROCK!!! I live in Northwet WA where my shield used to fog in the morning in August. With a pinlock I can't make it fog. Still not scratch resistant though. |

Plexus has a nifty mini spray can of their plastic cleaner/protectant/polish that fits neatly in a jacket pocket. I've found it at Cycle Gear and a few of the larger motor cycle shops around here.

some good ideas, some I've tried already I definitely am interested in finding the slip over the thumb or forefinger wiper blades for bout $10 .. tell me where =) As for the comments I've heard about plastic being more affordable than a scratch proof material...mmmm.. I'd spend LaRgE amounts of money up front instead of constantly buying new replacement shields. Keep the word out there, I'm sure I'll run across something of a scratch proof material. I spent TonS of money on my glasses to have them custom made to be made from a scratch 'resistant' material that is 1000x more scratch proof than any other material I can think of, and that's not just plastics... As for the vent lock, My helmet has the lock switch that flips the opposite direction to open it slightly - allowing it to keep from fogging... Works, but when it's cold sleety, its quite sheety.. (did that work? HA! don't care... either way.. awesome ideas, keep'em coming and spread the word... Next helmet id going to have some MoRe bells and whistles.. (as if this one doesn't already |

I have Shoei helmets and have not had to buy a replacement shield yet. I would have thought I would, as I scratches on my sunglasses. I have never noticed a scratch on my shields and I have quite a few miles on my current helmet. Maybe some brands of shields are more durable than others. |

Aerostich also has gloves with squeegees built in. Look for Elkskin Ropers. Very nice, IMO. |

A few things: #1 Anyone try Cat Crap Anti Fog lens cleaner yet? #2 Windshield wiper refills, trim to length, hot glue/sew into place. #3 When I can't see through my visor I lift it and remember one of the final scenes from "The World's Fastest Indian." Great movie for motorcyclists BTW. Other than that, I know my eyes are not scratch proof and they will heal, but to echo Ft bstrd...it does hurt like a MOFO! Spencer |

I was just thinking about my dad always telling me about using glycerin on the inside of car windshields to prevent fogging in the old days when defrosters really sucked. I can't say that I've ever tried it, but is should work on a face shield too. |

Roadrunner_s2 and Cyclonemick, the part number at J&P cycles is ZZ15043 and they're up to 12 dollars for three these days. Aerorostich sells a version with velcro for about $15.. worked great until I misplaced mine. Bought the cheapies and haven't lost one yet (except the ones on 'permenant' loan to some of my riding buddies). JP has occasional 10-15% off sales and bought a couple of boxes of them last time I needed bits n pieces for one of the sporties. |
