I opened the mail today to find that I got a speeding ticket from an automated unmanned camera on my way home from Florida a couple weeks ago. WTF! How is that even legal? Apperently I was going 12 over the limit somewhere in Cedar Rapids Iowa. I dont really have a problem with the ticket so much as how I got it. I dont even know if I was driving or if my wife was at that time. Where does it stop? Whats to stop them from putting them on every bridge? When has big brother gone to far? You should be able to download a video of your ticket, and you should be able to see who was driving |

Agreed. They just took most of the highway ones down here in Phoenix. Though cities can pay to keep them running. Many of the red light cameras are still operational. I do not have an issue with red light cameras. IMHO running a red light is far more dangerous than going 10 mph over the speed limit in perfect weather conditions... |

well that does blow. i read somewhere about iowa putting up a few more cams. i hopefully havent come across one yet. on a side note, did you come up and over onto I35 on your way back? seems like that would be the way to go, and if it was i owe you a swift kick in the ass for not stopping and saying hello when you would have literally driven 2 blocks from me! |

I did not. I came up the east side through Cedar rapids due north. Looks like I was in a hurry.... LOL |

Hey, Phil, I noticed the cameras gone last time I was in Phoenix. Why did they take them down? Of course, with my luck I got a ticket for having a photo blocker on my plate. Sometimes you can't win! Bwahahaha. |

In California, many camera tickets can be ignored because the police are phishing for you to admit guilt. These are called "snitch tickets" and they look official but they are not legally binding. If you sign it and return it, then you will receive a legal one that summons you to court. My wife got one and we ignored it after studying this site. The Encinitas PD thought there was too much doubt so they issued the snitch ticket in lieu of paying $90 for the court to issue a real summons. There were pictures that looked like my wife making an illegal turn but there is no way she would ever do a thing like that. http://www.highwayrobbery.net/redlightcamsticket.h tm This is for California and I don't know what the dealio is in Minnesota, but you should do some research before admitting guilt. |

From my experiences in AZ, they also have to have a clear picture of you at the wheel. If not they want you to snitch on the person driving, but they probably cant make you. Check out all your options before you admit guilt. Good luck |

My son got one from the same area too. I asked him if he didn't see the signs warning about them. They put them up in that area of the freeway due to the sharp curves. They've had several bad accidents due to excessive speed. I have to admit that it is nice to drive through there now since I'm not allowed to speed in my work vehicle. They can get away with the tickets since they send it to the owner of the vehicle instead of the dirver. |

I was told that they are true tickets as they don't slap any points on you. Nope just want your cash. I still don't want to get one! And I know that they timed the light near by so the yellow is to short to clear the intersection IF you are doing the speed limit. The Police say it right, the Hyway Dept say it wrong and the courts just take the cash. Needless to say the locals know where the cameras are and stay away. |

True, UK is the worst place. Amongst all the radars & unmarked cars, vans & bikes, they have average speed zones controlled by cameras with a registration recognition program all linked to a central database. This system will also let any LEO in the vicinity know about a stolen vehicle, or if there's no insurance or the vehicle inspection is out of date or if the road tax hasn't been paid or even if the registered keeper has outstanding warrants. All this information is available with a few mouse clicks to whoever is in authority "For your safety & security" of course. (insert irony icon here). It's one of the reasons I won't go back to live there. |

I've had two camera tickets in the Netherlands. It is hard to slow down when coming out of Germany. Got a ticket once for speeding on Italian tollway because I clocked in too fast from the beginning toll booth to my final toll booth. |

i spent a couple months in amsterdam putting up cameras and the computer system on one of the south passages, 3 lanes, approx 1.5 miles between 3 separate sets. so 9 cameras in all for collaboration. contract cost something like 3 mil US, paid for itself in less than a year!!! from what i hear, they are on every single freeway there now!! |

Ljm, our almighty Gov Jan Brewer couldn't afford to keep paying the 3rd party to continually operate them. Hybrid, I can only see these cameras as a way to make money. Incidentally, they lose money because many people try and skip out on the tickets. In AZ they took your picture, but if you had a mask (some people did funny things :P ), rode a motorcycle with a helmet, etc, you were in the clear no matter what. I cannot support "safety measures" when they are used for the PRIMARY purpose of generating revenue, and not increasing public safety. Not to mention it is hard to tell a camera you were speeding up to avoid getting run over by two semi trucks that just cut you off. By the way, in AZ there is a 1.5-2 ft strip of area between the sensors and you can easily ride between them. Phil |

Two words. Ready? Radar. Detector. They work wonders. And the laser argument is virtually moot (my fav word lately, it seems). Unless you're on an abandoned highway and get tagged all by your lonesome, laser detectors will see the traffic well ahead of you getting pinged, so you still get a good warning. Been there, done that, DIDN'T get the ticket. ~SM |

Darth - "Not to mention it is hard to tell a camera you were speeding up to avoid getting run over by two semi trucks that just cut you off. " The F are you talking about? If you just got cut off by two semi trucks then thatd mean they are in front of you.....so why were you speeding up to avoid them? Your example is dumb. from the original post ' Where does it stop? Whats to stop them from putting them on every bridge? When has big brother gone to far? ' All one has to do to NOT get busted and not give the government money from these things is simple....DONT SPEED. |

Radar/laser detector, illegal in France, confiscation & fine up to a max €1500 (about $2000). |

Hybrid, what about when you are alongside the cab of a semi truck, and another semi starts to come into your lane, and you are just behind their cab? I say that because it happened to me. Accelerating out of it is a much better option than braking out of it. The example is valid if you think about it properly. There are many times that accelerating out of a problem is more beneficial than braking, not to mention the danger of hard braking on a bike while being followed closely by a cage. Radar detectors do nothing against these cameras, they are based on weight sensors built into the pavement/road surface. Phil |

Lol, I just got this in my email a few minutes ago:
quote:A motorist was mailed a picture of his car speeding through an automated radar post in Sheboygan, WI. A $40 speeding ticket was included. Being cute, he sent the police department a picture of $40. The police responded with another mailed photo of handcuffs..
Sned em a picture, but DON'T sign the ticket! |

I admit - I break the speed limit. I usually run 2-4 mph over the speedlimit. |
