Finally, Daylight Saving Time starts again Sunday. Wish we had it year round. I like that additional hour of daylight after work. |

I posted this on Facebook a few weeks ago, but it seems like nobody believes me.
quote:Daylight Savings is this great nation's most serious threat. In adding an extra hour of daylight, we give the sun that much more time to melt icebergs and raise the ocean's water level. If you care about humanity, you will join me in the effort to TAKE BACK THIS COUNTRY, starting with eliminating global warming. Make this your status if you love America Furthermore, since it will take some time to move those political insiders in Washington, I urge you all to join my grass-roots movement Turn Back the Tide. If each of us good, honest, hard-working Americans were to take a bucket of sea water and pour it down a sink, surely we could lower the rising oceans that threaten our coastal borders. Let's show the rest of the world the can-do spirit that has made this country great!

DST should be returned to its ORIGINAL weekend. It's too damned soon to switch in March! Now, once again, it'll be DARK AND COLD when we wake up. That means we'll get out of bed, turn on all the lights in the house and crank up the heat for an extra hour every morning until the daylight catches back up to the time. This is how politicians "save energy." |

Daylight savings is just plain silly. Set one time, leave it alone. |

It's for the Farm Kids. Now that there are far fewer family farms, and agribusiness is industrial, DST is obsolete. As was the Mohair subsidy to ensure upholstery for Jeeps & Sherman Tanks, and the Helium Reserve, both defunded by B. Clinton, quite a while after WW1 & 2. I agreed on the Mohair Subsidy, though some Congresscritters complained. I felt that the Helium Reserve, since it is a unique American ( Texan ) resource, should have been kept. You never know when Zeppelins will be back! Fuel efficiency & romance! I predict they will get rid of DST right after the solar flare disaster that wipes out cities and technology, and the bulk of the living citizens are back on the Farm, raising food. You know, when it makes sense to keep it. |

It's for the Farm Kids. Thats bull. Most farmers dont participate in DST. Cows still want to be milked at the same time. You cant just bounce an animals time back and forth. |

You don't have to live on farm to know that. Anyone with a cat whose used to being fed at a specific time knows this VERY well. |

I can take dark in the morning fine, and I really enjoy seeing the sun rise as I sip my second steaming cup of morning coffee. I like longer days in Summer, more time to ride after working all day. I'm with Buellerxt, DST ROCKS! All you anti-DST curmudgeons just hush up. |

Blake I think most would agree but I wish it would just stay the same all year round. I dont like having my hours bounced around during the winter. |

OK - it's a geeky book but "Sieze the Daylight" is a good read about the origins of tracking time and gives a good discussion on the various evolutions of time keeping - INCLUDING Daylight Savings time as driven by the armaments industries as just ONE incarnation. http://www.seizethedaylight.com/ (yep, it's on my bookshelf - see what happens when you refuse to own a TV?) We're going to be moving to AZ in next few years - that is ONE state with the ability to exercise common sense. If I recall, most Indian nations keep to one time as well. |

quote:SEIZE THE DAYLIGHT: The Curious and Contentious Story of Daylight Saving Time tells the remarkable story of daylight saving time — the intriguing and entertaining tale of our attempt to regulate the sunlight hours. The book is full of funny anecdotes and remarkably quirky individuals, and was written by David Prerau, who has been called the world's leading authority on the subject. SEIZE THE DAYLIGHT relates the fascinating stories behind the movement for DST in the United States, Canada, Britain, France, and throughout the world. The goal of daylight saving time—to use daylight to its maximum advantage—is generally recognized to be of universal benefit. But few people understand how surprisingly controversial this deceptively simple idea has been. SEIZE THE DAYLIGHT chronicles the long-standing debates: Proponents have proclaimed DST's benefits, including saving energy, reducing automobile accidents, providing more daylight for outdoor activities, cutting crime, and many others. But DST also has had many detractors—from farmers to parents of schoolchildren—who have waged contentious battles against it. In addition to energy, accidents, and crime, daylight saving time affects a very wide variety of other, often unexpected areas, from Mid-East terrorism to the attendance at London music halls, voter turnout to gardening, street crime to the profits of radio stations. SEIZE THE DAYLIGHT relates all of these extraordinary tales as well—and a great deal more.

I'd vote for anyone whose campaign slogan is "NO MORE CLOCK TOUCHING"! At least that would show a little common sense. |
