I wish I could tell you something about this but since I am on unemployment I feel like I am just as big of a strain on the government right now. |

The difference is those who use the government as a temporary safety net vs. those who use the government as the permanent meal ticket. |

The difference is you worked for years and generated the money for the unemployment. |

I'm in the same boat. I've worked full time since I was 15 (2 part time jobs plus school). I hate taking unemployment but my job went to India without me in September. Found a contact job that lasted 3 months but have not had anything since middle of January. I'll find a good gig soon, but hate the idea of relocating. Been in the Tampa Bay area for 16 years, like it here but don't see a way I'll be able to stay. Well at least with a relocation I'll get to see a different part of the country. I live in hope! |

The proper term is Teats. ( pronounced the same ) I thought I'd set the Unemployment Insurance record back in the Carter/Regan era when we had a 22 week extension, then 52 week extension. ( Regan, ideology aside, did approve extensions to UI that were, at the time, unprecedented ) Feel like a piker compared to todays folk... But Unemployment is an insurance program that the employee pays in for, ( no matter what the paperwork seems to you, I assure you, you pay for it, like you pay for all taxes ) so under normal circumstances it's NOT "the dole" in the same way welfare or SSI have become. Under today's realities? UI is still something you will pay for, if you ever get another job before the ice age, giant meteor, triumph of the Jihad, nuclear war, Aztec Calender or other civilization ending Discovery Channel event. So be of good cheer. Especially if you no longer are officially unemployed because they fudged the numbers to make a politician seem competent, when he's not. |

i agree that the difference is using the gov. as a safety net instead of a permanent meal ticket, we just moved to the Savannah area from Hawaii and now I'm looking for work as a mechanic, had a couple of interviews but no go on jobs yet, like most of you as well have been working since i was 14 and and now 26 and cant get a job. |

my problem is it seems that the stuff that uncle sam trusted me to do the rest of the world wants a collage degree for. I have been trying to pursue something different in the mean time until I start school but it is hard with no experience in any field except budget, accounting, military payroll and then the usual basic soldier skills. I have been trying to get in to sells type job but no one seems to want to hire some one with no experience. But I do agree that us temporary unemployed folks are at least not using the system like those women with 5 kids for 5 different guys who have never worked a day in their lives relying only on the government to support them and their kids. What is really sad is the fact that I know a few of them and the money they do get goes to their unnecessary crap while their kids look like they came from a third world country. |

Attitude and bullshiate. I walked into the harley position with NO motorcycle sales experience. The ad said they wanted 5 years sales exp, mine was all in insurance. I was up against guys with averaging a decade and they all rode the brand (I was on Kawi at the time) While everybody was jockeying for position at the HR dept for interview position. I was down on the sales floor. Talking about bikes. Because I love talking about bikes. And then I would admit to the customer that I didnt work there and I would be happy to introduce them to the sales manager. (this was back in 03 and the floor was busy and the attitude was if you wanted a bike, you would come to the salesman, not the other way around) I made that introduction three times before my interview. I got the job. I got paid commish on all three bikes. Dont pidgeon hole yourself. get a little creative, and remember especially during this time of year, people do need help with accounting, taxes, payroll ! maybe focus on small business rather than the big dream job at company X. Go to the SBA and the Chamber; find out which businesses are Vet friendly - network, you would be surprised. Most of the jobs out there, never make the want ads. |

Not to disparage you guys but my wife says that they daily have people coming in asking for a job. Unfortunately they are shabbily dressed, unshaven, etc. Many openly admit that they need to fill out an app. just to keep their unemployment. Personally, I'd be embarrassed to do that. She does say that they do get guys who dress nice are in their 50's and obviously desperate for work. She feels really bad for them. I go to work daily with guys who sit around and do little for productivity. It really gripes me because the union protects them. |

Well seeing as how I hate being on unemployment I can promise you i am not one of those people dressing like crap trying to get a job. Good thing is I have an interview next week. This whole job search stuff sucks. Last job I had I did not have to go threw this whole crazy mess granted I had to go threw other mess like a physical and stuff like that but there was no having to interview and get dressed up all fancy and wait around to wonder if they was going to say yes. In fact the army was beating down my door and picked me up from my house for them to talk to me. |

The total labor force in the US is 158,000,000. At 10% unemployment, that's 15,800,000 (assuming that 100% are on unemployment benefits). Total US population is 310,000,000. That's 103,000,000 million on some sort of government assistance. That means that there is 92,700,000 who are not "unemployed" but are habitually on government assistance. Unemployment isn't the issue. |

Can we get a better breakdown of this number? I am curious how many are on social security, how many on permanent disablity, etc. |

I would say the largest portions are Medicare and Social Security (57% of the large entitlement programs). It doesn't really matter what the payment is. The real issue is that 0% of every dollar paid out in this "35% of all wages" equation are provided for under the Constitution. Each dollar confiscated and redistributed degrade the ability for the economy to grow as well as increase prices and decrease buying power of the lower and middle class. |

Not shocking... I would be content if they stopped the Section 8 vouchers. Won't mind paying for hoodlums as long as they're not destroying my house and mugging my neighbors. We can dream can't we? |
