Hey guys, I'm shopping for new helmets for this season as my gmax is a little worse for wear. What is your experience with modular helmets, specifically HJC? This would be a second helmet and it would be nice to be able to talk to somebody without taking my helmet off on rides with other people. What is the safety like on these? Are they generally less protective in a crash? Thanks for your input! (what I really want is one of the streetfighter looking helmets from europe like a givi or a boxer, but i'm having trouble finding one here since they usually aren't dot approved) |

I have a modular HJC. It's a decent helmet, very comfortable. It isn't that great at blocking out much sound though, and the quick release visor is easily broken. They do however sell replacement parts for it |

I just purchased a Nolan N103. It is my first modular helmet. I looked at both helmets at The Chicago IMS and the Nolan seemed to be a more robust design. I wore it for one short ride and it seemed OK. I do like the internal dark visor. The Nolan requires pushing two buttons to open to preclude accidental opening during impact. The two buttons are actuated with one hand. I purchased the modular helmet because some of my riding partners like their modulars. The Nolan helmet is a bit heavier than my other full face helmets but does not seem bad on my head. I think the Nolan has a fairly aggressive look to it. I have noticed the front of the helmet is closer to my chin and nose than my standard helmet, at least to me. |

This would be my next modular. http://stores.sportbiketrackgear.com/Categories.bo k?category=SHARK+Helmets%3AEvoLine If it's even remotely as quality built as the Shark helmets I've had in the past it would be far better than my HJC modular. And it has some of that streetfighter look. |

I used to have a Nolan, and it was a good helmet, I like the quick release strap and the two finger latch. Construction quality was medium. I just bought a Zeus 3000. Some of the Zeus helmets are Snell approved, the only one to be so. The only place they same to be available is on eBay, and the main seller is a prick and proud of it. I bought mine used on ebay, was a good deal. The helmets can be converted to open face at extra cost, although I don't know why one would want to do so. The are one of the few modulars that are painted to look like regular sport bike hats.

The Mrs. has a Nolan. Has had it for a couple years and has had good luck with it. No breakage, easy to open, etc. Only downside is that it weighs more than my full face. Has had really good luck with Nolan USA getting parts, visor's, etc. |

My wife just bought an HJC CL-MAX II, it's lighter and more comfortable than the CL-MAX was. |

I was wearing an HJC Symax II when I hit the pavement face first at 70mph. The helmet performed perfectly and I bought another. |

I've been eyeing the Bell Revolver. My buddy has a Shark Evoline 2, and it seems like a really nice helmet. |

I've had an HJC for a few years now, never had any problems. I like the quick change out of face shields too. Way less than a minute and no tools to lose. I've got a smoke, clear and mirrored lens for whatever I feel like. |

The second helmet I bought was a modular, HJC in fact, and is what I use now. I absolutely love it. My old helmet, I always had to deal with the plastic visor going up and down. Eventually, the hinges wore out, and it would flip up by itself when I would turn my head. This one, I've never flipped up the visor, and never will. It saves the cheap visor hinges. I love that I can lift it and talk to someone. Great when you're stuck in traffic, too (cools you off). Sunglasses on/off? Not a problem with a modular. Want to kiss the prom queen? Done. What is your experience with modular helmets, specifically HJC? Xbniner, my HJC is for sale. I didn't care for the overall quality, and Denise bought me a new Shoei modular at the Long Beach IMS as an early Christmas present. Here's the ad for my HJC: One-year-old HJC Sy-Max II modular motorcycle helmet in excellent overall condition. Size Large. Metallic silver. DOT approved. Retractable integrated sun-shield. MSRP $289.99. Has a few little nicks here and there from normal use, and could probably use a new face shield. $150.00. More info including pix at www.hjchelmets.com. Make ya a deal: If you want it, it yours for the cost of shipping as a "Pay It Forward" kinda dealio. Let me know in this thread. Take care, FB |

I'd like to have a modular, but most of the latching mechanisms are plastic, and I just don't trust that when nearly 40% of impacts are directly on the chin bar. I think the Nolan has metal latches, but they cost a little more than I'm willing to spend on a helmet, so I guess I'll just stick with the full face. ~SM |
