Well things have to change and I guess I gotta go big or go home!!!! I just went over my YTD income and I made allot of money last year but I spent a hell of allot of money as well. So going to 1 more worker isn't gonna get it I think as the ol saying goes in for a penny in for pound.
The problem is I wanted an American dealership but I can't get one I can't get a Japanese one either. I also got snubbed by Hyundai not even a call back. So I got in touch with a company called Tailift it's a Chinese forklift I can't believe I might do this it breaks my heart but family first. I gotta build something for the kids!!!!! I am in a target area for any of the major brands but they are already here and with financial situations in rough shape everywhere the Chinese trucks are several thousand dollars cheaper. I am pursuing there performance record as best as I can and how well they stand behind the dealer and ultimately the customer on warranty issues. Any of you guys run across them in your daily lives or have any info I surely would appreciate it.
Thanks
Dave

It's so nice to see such an uplifting thread!

I just had to say that.
I don't know much about lifts, except spending a lot of quality time in a box three stages up. If it had said "Made in China"........well, I'm with Skinstains

It's an interesting dynamic.

One of our former Badweb regulars had enough and called it quits one day . . sold his business and walked away.

He started the most ridiculous sounding business you can imagine. I was eager to watch to see what happened because he's dangerously smart, works hard and has made success a habit.

He deals with companies and people all over the East and spends a great deal of time in China and other countries that have elevated manufacturing to an art form.

It requires a tremendous about of, and it sounds like you are doing this, knowledge of the culture and what you are getting in to.

It will certainly be an adventure.

Look at it this way, when you sell a Chinese fork lift that weighs in at 8000 pounds, you are in actuality selling about five or six scrapped American cars back to Americans, and by doing so putting our metals back on our soil.

Have you visited any Tailift vendors? Have you checked parts availability with any of them? What about attachment availability?

I repair forklifts and have not run into them but I can ask some guys at work if they have.

Yeah you won't have to "worry" about those pesky unions making sure that the poor Chineese sod working 80 hour weeks for 3 or 4 bucks a week building your product isn't breathing asbestos or working in any sort of conditions that Cowboy wouldn't want to work in...

Any thought as to just starting out by wheeling and dealing used fork lifts? Unless you are doing that already...I don't know.

Specialize in one thing and do it well, people will find you.

Young man I have worked in the worst conditions -burning ships- burning oil wells and I have never needed any body to decide how much I was to be paid If I was un happy I could have quit. If you are unhappy get off your ass and learn a better trade. Dont wine and mone if you dont want to better your self

You got it all wrong old man ! Those poor in China don't even know that what they are doing is killing them. As for me...I'm not sittin' on my ass I work a hard as hell dangerous as hell job every day. I'm also a proud union member who has NEVER taken a days pay for a day I didn't work at least a day's worth of labor. If we didn't have to "worry" about those pesky unions all of our grade school age children would be working those great 14 hour day 7 day weeks like they used to. I've had my fair share of burning oil wells to...that doesn't make a hero it makes a younger corps....

Thats what we need to do exploit the less fortunate. Like I said I never took a penny I didn't deserve and actually earned a lot of them that I didnt get. I'm not looking for a fight. I'm just pissed off at people making billions of dollars while not even ensuring the basic health needs of workers. I curse OSHA and CAL-TRANS almost daily but I also know they are necessary to some degree. Aren't you glad all of our coal miners have resperators now ???

UNION CONSTRUCTION
Hope everything works out for you dude. I wish I could come up with something to start a company with. Those billboards all over the place that say Microsoft was started in a recession remind me that I need to be my own boss.

Every time I figure out something I can make that has a market with a huge profit margin there is a law against it.

Check with M2nc (Ulywife's husband Carlos).

I think his company manufactures fork lifts. He might be able to help you get in touch with a franchise person.

OK guys:
I am checking availability of parts the seem to be plentiful. My parts guy stocks stuff for them not sure on the big stuff yet. I am also looking into how well they stand behind big warranty items.
I have been selling used forklifts for years but my mainstay is Service. The reason I want a brand name is all the big companies want guaranteed maintenance with the machines they purchase. This is not something I would want to provide as an Independent because of the big ticket Items such as Steer axle, lift cyl, trans ,motors.
And you need to know I tried to go with the American companies and Korean and they aint intrested and Tailift looks to have an assembly plant in Ontario CA. And Possibly Ft Lauderdale Fla. I am checking on this as well.

Look one over, very carefully. Often the line is a discontinued Japanese lift from a decade or two back. Was a "PowerLift" dealer in the early nineties. Mitsubishi sold them the complete assembly line. It was the little things... heim joints, fuse boxes, bonnet hinges, light socket... that went bad on their own, the quality was terrible. Then brake drums splitting and transmissions blowing fwd/rev packs. The factory tech didn't own tools that fit some of the fasteners. We built our reputation on service, were there when you needed us and got it repaired in a timely manor. Waiting five months for a spool valve does not make the owner of a six month old machine happy. Was so bad, we took the hit, replaced all dozen or so sold in those first six months with new TCMs, stopped all payments to the chinese and coughed up the difference ourselves. Kinda glad I'm not in that buisness anymore, though I do miss working on the little three wheeled TCM electrics and the 10 ton V8 powered Hysters. Good luck.
