So I am in Iraq with some extra time on my hands (which is a good things when you are Medevac)...so I decided to do a little garage design work. My garage is 28x26 and is attached, but unfinished since building my house in 2009. The floors have radiant heat...but since the garage is not insulated I have not turned on the heating system yet. So I have been thinking seriously about finishing it when I get home with insulation, drywall, cabinets, epoxy floor, etc. I downloaded Googles SketchUp (free version) to make my FIRST attempt at a 3D CAD project. I exported the animation of the design, and then spliced in some still frame shots and set it to music within Windows Movie Maker. Being a former recording studio guy...I hated WMM...but it was all I had. Enjoy the video...and let me know if I am missing anything to make it a great place to work on cars and bikes. As a Buell guy...I worked in a couple details into my design that you all might like. http://s1193.photobucket.com/albums/aa357/maximum303/?action=view¤t=GarageDesignTake2.mp4 ~ (Message edited by maximum on March 01, 2011) |

Yeah. Stay safe over there. Nice garage. Looks like mine but without the fancy cabinetry. Only one bike? Like a guy at work told me "better have a couple, cause they have Harley engines". He owns 5 Harley's. |

Toolbox is on wheels...so it is stored in the corner but rolls to wherever the work is. The bench is about the only item in the design that I already own...and it's a beast! So it can only go in that corner of the garage. I only show one bike in the CAD to keep things simple...I'm actually up to 4! Good thing that I also have a workshop in the walk-out basement where I generally store the Buells.

Thanks for your service overseas, keep up the great work, but yes honestly, I hope you have lots more time on your hands With a garage like that... and I might not go into the main house for days. There is a huge market for custom garages with repair capabilities, because many covenant neighboors will not let you work on your cars in your drive or your store a 'project' as you work on it. Locally we have a couple that seem to be doing well in the condo-garage market And they aint cheap. www.garagetownfederalway.com www.garageplusstorage.com/ and of course its own forum http://perfectmancave.com/forum/ |

Cool part about it is that a garage is about the cheapest part of a house you can build . . . I've got a couple pics I'd really ought to share. Best I've seen in the last year are the Forbes' garage out in Bedminster, a guy I met by accident one night at an event who showed me his 31,0000SF garage and a fellow retired electrician. . . . I agree . . . I wouldn't come in the house. Erik and I were on a radio talk show back in 1996. Afterward we went riding with the host who was a confirmed car/bike fanatic. Erik rode his BMW R1100 and we ended up at his house. It had 2 8-car garages facing each other . . his and hers . . with, sure enough, matching "his and hers" Mercedes SL's . . . As my Dad used to say . . . "it's not an oversized garage if you can't ride your bicycle around the cars when they are all parked inside". Very cool stuff ! P.S. - for the first time in my adult life I don't have a garage . . . go figure !! |

Maximum- that is completely awesome, both design and presentation. I will have to say that the coolest thing you have in that garage doesn't even show- radiant floor heat. I read about it in column in a mechanical engineering magazine years ago; the author raved about how awesome it is. I used to work for a railroad, and back in the early 50's they had installed an early form of it in some of their steam locomotive shop servicing buildings. The guys that used to work in that shop said it could be well below freezing outside, the doors on both ends of the shop would be open with the wind whipping through, but you'd be comfortable standing on that nice, warm floor. Where you live, I imagine that'll be a life-saver in the middle of the winter when you're lying on the floor under a car. |

Almost forgot about the original post after looking at some of the garages of the "have's" ! Holy Smokes ! Those are some serious car houses. I don't call it a garage if things don't get worked on inside of it. |

who needs a house? In my county, this is a 'garage',,,, you are 'required' to pour foundation on a house..... no ruling on ever needing to 'finish' the house theres another five bay L design with a man cave .... decisions, decisions, decisions I will post that one, when I find the line drawings |

When I relocate to the southwest (before next winter)I plan on some sort of a garage/shop with a little loft or something to SSS in. On a seperate note, what's with the "mancave" thing ? It sounds very gay to me. In two forms of the word. First off (homo-gay) a mancave just sounds like something I really don't want to see let alone enter ! Second, (sissy/pussy-gay) isn't the whole house/garage or whatever the mans domaine ? I mean do men really have to build or designate a special place where they can actually be themselves because they can't be themselves anywhere else ? That's very gay. There is only one thing that's punishable when in the vicinity of my insignificant other, and that is farting. She will punch you in the face (if she knows you) or chest (if she doesn't know you) if you fart in her presence. I have no problem with that as we are usually apart doing what we each like to do and sometimes I could use a punch in the face anyway. (Message edited by skinstains on March 01, 2011) |

ah, it is also on the other side of things a very nice pre qualifier for a girl that you would want to date. the question usually comes up So where do you live ?..... Its an off grid garage that I share with motorcycles and an old pick up truck it usually ends the meet and greet right there. without exception so far. somewhere theres a girl that gets it.... |

Very cool vid! Dig the tire rack. I'm doin that! Not sure about the air compressor next to the work bench... Seems the perfect time for that baby to kick on would be while using a dangerous implement improperly at the bench. Just sayin. |

Steve, we are all looking forward to your safe return. Having been in your garage (which I thought was cool as is) I can see what your thinking. It looks like to me that the races are going to be viewed there while WE do maintenance on the bikes. Correct? Stay safe Steve, from an old retired MSgt, thank you for all that you do. City, there's a 'garage' like that near me. It's a pole barn with the upstairs converted to a house. The best part is that it's in a residential area since the original house burned down. I'd do if I ever got a divorce. |
