I'm looking to get a decent riding jacket. I've usually had those $150 specials from junk leather vendors and I'd like to step up to something of better quality. I'd like to find something of a heavier leather and plenty warm...

I've heard of Vanson, but who else should I look into?

If money is no object try Langlitz.

Two of my best peeps in the riding gear industry opened their independent shop just a few years ago, down the highway a bit from me- they do a big mail-order biz, but most importantly, they help test, develop, and advise on manufacturing the products they sell.

Give Megan and Francois a shout at the following URL, tell 'em Brad sentcha. They will advise you very well on this no matter what...

I haven't tried it, Aerostich has an interesting looking leather option.

Warmest thing I've ever had is my textile touring jacket. High quality waterproof zippers really control air infiltration. It has a neck bungee that also keeps the cold out and warm in at the neck, helps in the rain too. I may never go back to leather. It held up well in a fairly slow low side, but if you plan to crash often leather might be a better choice. Of course if it really gets torn up in a wreck it will probably get added to the insurance total.

I've owned multiple leather jackets over the years and froze my ass off and got soaking wet in all of them. Finally saw the light a few years ago and bought one of those....textile touring jackets as noted above. Without a doubt the warmest most comfortable jacket I've ever owned. Even is OK in the summer with the vents opened up. I've got a Teknic Stinger (on clearance for $60, best money I've ever spent on bike gear) but they're all pretty similar.

Let me add this - About Vanson, they can alter their stuff anytime. Say you lose weight - send it to them and have it taken in some. Gain weight? They'll add in material.

Vanson is so good.

Ditto what Hybridmomentspass said. My wife lost some weight after I purchased her vanson leather riding pant. They popped the seams and tucked the fabric...no charge for this during a Scuderia West Vanson apparel event.

Vanson is good stuff...but if you want warm, go textile.

Leather magnifies ambient temp. Cold, it makes things colder. Hot, you cook. Textile, on the other hand, stays a temperature-neutral material.

I have a Vanson I wear if I do a track day.

I wear nothing but textile on the street.

Have had 3 US made jackets from Vanson, now have a Grayson jacket from Fox Creek Leathers.

Liked the Vansons...Love the Grayson. For a bit more than a paper-thin 'stan or Chinese made jacket you can have a thick, USA made one that will last a lifetime.

Has anyone heard of 'Fly' textile jackets? Our local shop carries that brand.

Thanks for the ideas!

As has already been mentioned,Vanson is a good choice.
I have a Fox Creek jacket that I have been very happy with. Combined with a heated liner it is plenty warm, but by itself it is only good to high 40s F

Can't agree with Ratbuell on the ambient temp thing. I wear my vansons in all weather and I have not had the experience he relates with regard to amplifying ambient temps. However, you can vent the jackets....but not the pants. I'm a bit mental about my Vansons. I wore them in Death Valley all three times I was there. Was I hot? yes. But to me protection is paramount. I feel much more confident as a rider with my Vansons on.

I'll take a look at the Fox Creek line...

Love my Fox Creek Grayson. Heavy stuff. The armor they offer is excellent quality, but pricey. The vents work great for warmer, as does the insulated liner for cold riding.

They also offer a jeans-style set of overpants in their chaps section that are really nice - completely openable chaps, but with a normal, leather jeans look to them.
