Just received the response from 2011 Hoka Hey sponsored by Harley Davidson. My 1997 Buell S3 is eligible and considered a Harley Davidson motorcycle. Now any of you out there ready to think about this event? 48 states plus Canada. http://www.hokaheychallenge.com/ |

You can ride only a portion of the ride. After rereading the FAQ though, it looks like they would want you to be in Phoenix to be a participant. However, I did read something about just participating in part along the way. I'm not sure what the point of that would be though. (Message edited by DynaSport on February 26, 2011) |

A good friend of mine did this last year. We spent a lot of time getting his bike ready with all the sponsorship he was able to get. He has the same opinion about the event as I do. He just knows not to do it again. They did allow Buells to enter last year (just not the 1125 water cooled Buells). |

Wow. Costs $1000 to ride on public roads? Sounds like a great deal. |

My parting words to my friend that road this thing (why he wanted to do it is beyond me). "There will be 1000 people riding the same route as you, please be careful. There will be some that ride distance, most will not know what that feels like. Hopefully they will be gone after the third 1000 mile day." I forget the number of fatalities they had but I know it was at least two. And of course the crash when all these idiots left from the start line. I have some great video of some of it somewhere. The organizer of the event is somewhat shaddy and I would not trust him with 1 dollar much less 1000. I found it hilarious that they had to ride to all of the Indian burial grounds to "pick up the spirits of dead warriors" Give me a break. Besides being silly and dangerous it is stupid. I think my BS meter would have pegged about three days before the start. I am pretty sure that I could make that trip for less than 1000 dollars and can actually have a good time doing it. |

I'm not entering I just e-mailed to see what their response would be about Buell's since Harley was the main sponsor this year. |

Is Harley a sponsor? They have not been in past years. Most likely for liability issues I guess. I know dealers have been in the past but not Harley. |

Wrong Super Ghey. And here is the kicker, they get 1000 people every year and have to turn down everyone after the 1000 entries. I just do not get it. Reminds me of the saying "if I have to explain it, you would not understand" well' I don't understand.... but please do not explain it. |

"H-D ruins everything they touch don't they ? " What are you talking about? I mean, in regards to this thread, I dont get your point at all. They have a HD logo on their page, but that doesnt mean HD controls it. From what I read it doesnt say it HAS to be a HD product, just an air cooled twin. I dont see the point in paying that much to run public roads either, especially if nothing else comes with it. But everyone is different I wish all of the riders a safe journey |

From what I read it doesnt say it HAS to be a HD product, just an air cooled twin. From the bottom of the front page of the website: "Harley Davidson - The motorcycle of the Hoka Hey Motorcycle Challenge" From the first line of the FAQ: 1. Is the Hoka Hey Motorcycle Challenge™ limited to Harley's only again this year? A. Yes, we took a queue from last year’s event and had considered opening the event to two divisions for Hoka Hey Motorcycle Challenge™. Division 1 was to include V-twin, air-cooled motorcycles and Division 2 would have included everyone else. However – After evaluating the level of interest (or lack thereof) from riders of non Harley-Davidson motorcycles, we have concluded the current level of interest will not support a second division as initially envisioned. Therefore, the event will become an all Harley-Davidson, air cooled V-Twin event for 2011. We received some encouraging expressions of interest from non-Harley riders but it does not seem that the interest will result in a field large enough to overcome the significant effort and cost of producing a separate division. It was our feeling that mixing non-Harleys and Harleys in one group would result in an all out grudge race and that is the last thing we want so we discounted that format. ------------------ It's a fanboy event. They could have at least hired somebody with a decent command of the English language to edit the website... "took a queue".... LOLOLOL (Message edited by pwnzor on February 27, 2011) |

I didnt see that part, apologies I just saw a part where it mentioned air-cooled v-twins (didnt see anything about HD in front of it) As for them thinking there'd be a grudge...why? What sorts are they trying to attract if thats the reaction they'll get. And going back to what I said earlier in response to a comment posted about HD being involved: Still doesnt mean that HD is involved, just that the people organizing it are fans and not opening it to other makes |

Hoka Hey website click home button click news... first article, 2/15/11 begins with... "The Hoka Hey Motorcycle Challenge announced today that Harley-Davidson Motor Company will provide marketing and promotional support for the 2011 Hoka Hey Motorcycle Challenge." In total a one page article. The quote above is followed by quotes from H-D Director of customer experience. And last year by "most accounts", they had 600 riders, although there are stories ranging from 300 to 1000 I remain neutral on the ride. Not for me but if someone wants to do it, I say go for it... I can ride an IBA 48/10 on my own and start out by keeping the first $1000 for my own expenses... (Message edited by revz on February 27, 2011) |

I was at the start in kw covering this for regional news so I got up close to the organizers before the event and can help clear up a couple things possibly. I also rode in the middle of the pack at the dawn start to record images of the ride for the first 45 miles. I had a front and rear camera on me. Observations: Lakota people are " tricky" by nature. I have had the experience of being on the "Rez" and observing that this trickyness is their way of teaching. Jim Red Cloud IMHO did not intend this to be anything like any other rally or race or ironbutt and to compare to these more common events is misleading. The Hoka hey was masterminded to bring together a group of " warriors " to help bring light to the pressing needs of water on the Rez... The tricky part came when certain people thought they were simply going on an extended, albeit tough ride, with the hope of winning prize money. Jims self stated " real intent" for the ride was revealed at the drivers meeting a couple of days before the event. He was very clear then about the events' purpose. To him it was more of an awareness & charity ride to help his people. Some people felt duped. I understand that thinking, but I have had the benefit of seeing how Lakotas "work". They seem to teach in a round about way. It is not easy to be around them, and chaos usually follows their dealings with people who arent accustomed or ready to accept their ways. To me, Jim was open and inviting and said I was welcome to join in the complete ride with my Ulysses. Taking off for a month with two days notice was very un- doable for me.... But I was real tempted to join the 500-700 riders on the once in a lifetime ride. I did ride with them for the fifty miles and in that short time observed how careful and law abiding most of the riders were leaving the Keys. Yes accidents happened, but statistically with that many riders and miles you would have some accidents I would think. Jim was pretty clear (at the last minute) that the purpose of the ride was to raise money & awareness for water on the Rez and to help cleanse the spirit and soul of the rider as well as the fallen warriors from his people. He warned participants not to ride for money or prestige or they would fail. If this all sounds too spooky then you may not want to join Hoka Hey ll. It's not just another bike ride if Jim is doing it. Jim is human and he probably made some big mistakes in organizing the first group. It turned some people off. However, I observed many riders who "got it" and understood why they were riding in this grueling event. I was moved by Jims real intentions and was glad to see this was not just another event for glory or money. There are videos somewhere of the whole meeting In KW if anyone wants to see and hear for themselves what went on. Hope this helps anyone who was wanting more info about the event. Many people said Jim was a total fraud. I think they were wrong. The money was given as promised once all the riders claims were vetted. Harley would not be a sponsor if this was a scam. I still don't understand why it's only Harleys that get to ride though. I can only imagine that it's a way of leveling the playing field somewhat. Or maybe it has to do with American Spirit. It's a good day to ride. Ride safe. |
