Mini Mag flash light won't work reliably with new batteries/good bulb? Just screw off the lens cap and rotate a few turns, the black plastic washer looking thing that holds the bulb. The contact points get dirty with time.Spinning it ,cleans it up. Cheap ass LED,3 cell flash light quits. Carefully remove the rubber switch boot on the end cap and give the innards under that a shot of contact cleaner. Both of the above have worked every time for me when everything else in hardware was good.
NYC is a funny place . . . I KNOW, with certainty, that it's only a matter of time till I end up on a shut down subway . . either mechanical failure or crime.
I ALWAYS keep 3 with me. One Surefire, one MagLite and one of something the hand out at work that kick's ass. The Surefire (thanks to a Badwebber in Law Enforcement) is also designed to serve as a improvised weapon.
I keep a carton of Sure Fire batteries handy and change them.
Call me a chicken . . but there are a couple things that MUST work when they need to.
I carry two surefires with me everywhere I go. One in my jeans pocket, the other in my jacket pocket. Great flashlights. If you're interested in buying one, I would suggest looking at ebay or candlepower forums marketplace.
I have a 6 cel mag light for in the car and the house. Good for bonking somebody in the head and seeing too. The surefires are nice and are easier to carry and make a good weapon as well. After looking at my friends surefire I've been wanting one as the mag isn't excactly something I can put in my pocket or on my bike, Oerdee thanks for the video I'm going to make that.
Slaughter I love the Pelicans as a diver and prefering a MSA rated light I have many pelican lights The only problem with pelicans is the warranty Use by children under 5 and bear attack is no reason to void a warranty GEE!
I've got a couple military issue surefires (don't recall the exact model number) and they are very powerful but it seems like the lamps have a pretty short life. I've had better luck and much more confidence in the $25 eveready LED head harness lights. They take up about the same space in a pocket or backpack and I have yet to have one fail on me. Tough to beat the totally hands free. A lot of guys in my unit laughed at me when I used it on my first Iraq deployment but when we went again a couple years later more than half the unit had come over to the "un-dark" side
>>>>and make a good weapon as well. There is actually a Badwebber who does a class for Interpol Anti-Terrorism Task Force on using the SureFire as a weapon. He gave me the light but not the class . .
I have an old habit, from when I was doing lots of long distance test riding and spending a lot of nights on bikes . . of putting lights on the bike. I buy those Mini-Mag lights that come with the nylon pouch and Ty-Rap them on the bike. I always keep one on the bars where I can reach it pronto.
I've found that SureFires eat bulbs fast so I ordered a couple spares and a box of batteries.
the problem with flashlights is you have to hold them. headlamps are far better if you are working on something. for self defense, nothing beets a 3 d maglight.
3D cell mag light for driving cab... No weapons allowed... but if someone was gonna grab me he was gonna get it... Wish I had my hanging light for tent... but just got a 5 LED 10 buck clip on... good for hands free pinned to my riding jacket sleeve...
I am a borderline "flashlight-aholic", but I using willpower to keep my collection at a minimum, and staying away from candlepowerforums.com. I currently have a Surefire G2 LED, a Fenix L1T, and a 4D Mag-Lite with a Malkoff LED module. I am thinking I need a light for my keychain, possibly one that uses 1AAA.
I was hassled by a Canadian border agent when he search my bike after asking if I had any weapons. Of course I said no but then he started going through my stuff.
When he pulled out the 3-c Maglight he said "I thought that you said you had no weapons"? I replied "It's a flashlight, and I can use it as a hammer to drive tent pegs". I must have sounded a little sarcastic (a problem I have) because he went through all my stuff.
Bikertrash- go check out the lil LED's I mentioned, VERY bright for the size- heck, when camping at TWO I found mine to be indispensable. About the size of a quarter!
We used to use SureFire extensively in the Airborne world... then came along a vendor called "First Light". This guy took his shiny new light and pitched it against a brick wall. Picked it up, turned it on and then ran over it with a big truck, turned it on, then submerged it in water and turned it on... he made his point, the sucker is TOUGH.
I was sold. I bought the IR/RED Light/120 Lummens White version.
I own these lights: -Surefire L4 -Surefire E1B -Surefire U2 Ultra -Surefire C2 (is going to be a host for a Malkoff M61W dropin, will get the body bored to accept 18650 3.7V Li-ion rechargeable cells) -Zebralight H51w -Maglight 3D -A couple of ultrafire/uniquefire lights I got as gifts. One has an MC-E P60 size drop-in that runs on an 18650 cell, the other is a small cree R2 running on a AA battery.
If you're going to go for a Surefire, I would strongly recommend an LED model. An LED has a much longer life than a conventional xenon bulb, in addition the run times being much better. Depending on what model you get, it can be easy to "mod" the light with many off-the shelf "drop-ins" that have a much higher output/runtime than the stock emitter.
Surefire basically has a "no questions asked" warranty, too. I've emailed them a couple of times letting them know something failed (the clicky tailcap on my L4 failed two times...), they usually send me a replacement part via UPS within a week. There's only one occasion I had to send the actual light in--I dropped it and it would no longer turn on. I sent it in and a week later had a new light on my doorstep. Pretty cool.
i use the stinger at work, it is one of the best lights i have ever used, i dropped it accidentally from about 15 foot up to concrete it was still shinning bright when i picked it back up.
6 cell maglite. Upgraded with LED bulb, batteries last forever. A 3 cell is a little faster to swing, but a 6 cell will make the assailant think twice before advancing on you.
ALSO, a 6 cell has other useful properties. If you get somehow closed out of your own gated community, you can either hop the fence and place the maglite on the magnetic sensor strip to open the exit gate, OR you can just roll it under the gate to trigger it. A 3 cell won't trigger the average gate. DAMHIK.
Of course, I would NEVER advocate using this method to access someone ELSE'S gated community. That just wouldn't be right.
I have a 4D cell Maglite that I keep in my truck for extra light and uh...other emergencies. It stays right next to my seat. Cheap and reliable, so far.
As to your question about yours not working- try cleaning all mating surfaces, and apply some dielectric grease. That should get you back running.
