How did the surviving Somali pirates surrender fast enough to live? |

However it went down, my thoughts and prayers are with the families of the folks on the sailboat. I think the pirates may have crossed a line there is no backing away from, and the public would support armed action by the military force created for just such an event....... The Marines. Now its up to the POTUS to make the decision to take action and root out the problem at the source. Namely the bases/ports they operate from. |

In other words - nothing will be done except some speech with "strong condemnation". Our commander in chief's response will be as pathetic as we have come to expect form him. Kilroy |

My thoughts also to the families. I seem to remember a song: "From the Halls on Montezuma, To the shores of Tripoli" inspired by the last time we faced this exact problem. Which got fixed in short order. And has not been a problem in the Tripoli area since. It is time for our government (meaning us) to stop "condemning these actions in the strongest possible manner" and actually stop them. IMO |

A news source said the pirates were in contact with their home base, who ordered them to kill the hostages "before they got boarded"...and the surviving pirates are now safely "in custody"!!!!!! (reportedly two pirates were killed during the boarding and two others were found unexplainedly dead.....they should be all sleeping with the fishes...or better yet the destroyer that captured them should sail into a Somali port with a dozen of them hanging from the yard arm... |

They need a good dose of S.O.S. Sink on Sight Fishing... really, with AK-47's and gaff ladders? International Maritime treaties and law say you can Execute them on the high seas for crimes of piracy. And so we should, without exemption, without hesitation. May not solve all the problem, but it sure does put a bitch of crimp to repeat offenders. And if we are not prepared to do it, we should let Ivan, because they have no love lost on skinny 'fishing' boats Or we could license and sell branded shirts and bumper stickers "Have you coddled your Terrorist or Pirate Today?" * D.o.J. If they confiscated the radios they could lock in on the base transmitter. Send a Stealth missle in there to clean up the mess. |

The nice thing is that we currently have in our quiver the weapons system that quickly lock on to a source of fire or a radio signal and return fire. For those of you who join me as cheerleaders for American innovation and technology. . . . http://www.ebaumsworld.com/video/watch/80608077/ The moment we muster a proper response I'd wager this behavior would cease immediately. |

If Lloyds give a freighter a hard time for having a gun on board..... I think an AK is vital equipment in that part of the world. Gaff ladders? Sink with crew. A buddy of mine finally retired and took off for a caribbean cruise on a sailboat. Lifetime dream, I'm sure he's having fun. ( it's not a yacht... well, not big ) When he was getting ready, I hauled him out to the local gun club, and I ran over the 'function drills for his new Winchester Marine shotgun. Busted some clays on the ground & on sticks at the pistol pits, then gave him the gun if, and only if, he carried with him on his boat. After some philosophy talk, The final conclusion was, "Ok, if I have to drop it overboard to keep out of jail I will. If I have to use it, I'll make sure my wife and I are the survivors....." The next day I took his wife out and ran her through the drills, and she's not only a better shot, but I think better prepared for her own defense. The trick to make her happy? Duracoat. (Paint) Black/tactical stuff is fine for guys. Johnny Cash cool. Girls like shiny & colors. ( wish I took a pic, now ) So the stock, forend and receiver are pastel blues, with the Lips logo from "Rocky Horror" and "Betty" in script hand painted on the stock. ( her name is Veronica ) The rest is shiny nickel plate. |

I always thought Israel should set up guns along their border with automatic aiming computers. When they see a muzzle flash from the jerks on the other side taking pot shots at the settlements that the computer aimed guns would return fire. I wouldn't be surprised if there already is a thing but I'll take credit it if ever happens. |

Of course they'll be brought here for an expensive, show trial. And we'll pay the price tag for their high-priced lawyers, that are probably good campaign contributors, provide an international stage for the pirates to spout their anit-western rhetoric, then we can provide for their well being for the next thirty years, movie/book deals.........it'll be awesome. I like the high seas justice idea much better. We should have leveled that place back in '93.... |

>>>Three hots and a cot for as long as they need..... Perfect! They can stay in downtown Brooklyn with Rahm Emanuel's terrorists. They have a racquetball team that plays 2 days a week. Do you know if the pirates play racquetball? If not, there are all other sorts of things to do. Let us know when they'll be here so we can be sure to have top notch legal representation for them. Be sure to let them know that the moment they set foot here . . they don't have to say a word, are entitled to free legal counsel and are protected from self incrimination. Are there any of the hostages coming to testify? That'll be essential. |

I've thought about that. I wouldn't be the least bit surprised to find out the pirates are actually trying to get caught by the US just to get out of their hellhole. Our prisons sound WAY nicer than some of those countries over there (so long as you don't mind a little gay sex every now and then). ~SM |

An A6 will only break the sound barrier in a dive, and then you have to replace the radome. Assuming you recover the aircraft. |

I heard this morning that the people on this boat were warned of pirates in the area and strongly advised NOT to venture there before this happened. I'm sorry as hell they're dead and the pirates should have been obliterated on the spot, but damn, what are people thinking that do stuff like this? |

We used to do mission work in Juarez.....Not anymore. Last time I was there was in 2005 with a lifted Rubicon on 35" tires. Do you think I would make it out alive today with that vehicle, let alone being American. |

"Girls like shiny & colors." Really? I supposed I will have to paint my AR... My CC is black as well. I feel so sad for the victims and their families. I think that the only reason to leave the pirates breathing is to extract info from them. I'm normally not a violent person, but I agree with City. They should have been sent back to their shores as an example. Did you ever see the skinning scene from the movie Predator? |

Maybe the prowler but the intruders were lightin the caps off of soviet trawlers for years and if you wanted a stick jockey off the deck with a low approach and a nap o the water event with highspeed, it was always the intruders, never the tomcats pity there isnt a naval version of the A-10 too. that damn gun is built for 'fishing' boats |

It was a great aircraft (my favorite to watch, least favorite to work on) but it was subsonic. Like I said, they can briefly break the sound barrier (in a dive) but it damages the aircraft. It wasn't designed to deal with those stresses. Interesting note: The A-3 was faster than the A-6 and was faster than an F14A (not sure about the A+ or D variant with the new engines) unless they're on AB. A-3s returning from bombing runs would beat the 14s back to the boat. Neat plane. Scary to watch land. |

Here it goes again..... http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20110228/ap_on_re_eu/pi racy COPENHAGEN, Denmark – Pirates have hijacked a Danish sailboat with four adults and three children aboard as they were crossing the Indian Ocean, Denmark's government said Monday. Most hostages captured in the pirate-infested waters off East Africa are professional sailors, not families. Pirates are not known to have captured children before. The Danish Foreign Ministry said the ship sent a distress signal on Thursday. On board was a Danish couple, their three children — aged 12-16 — and two adult crew members, also Danes. "It has now been confirmed that the sailboat was hijacked by pirates in the Indian Ocean," the ministry said in a statement. Two days before the Danish sailboat sent the distress signal, four Americans were killed by Somali pirates in a hostage standoff. They were the first Americans slain by Somali pirates since a wave of attacks began six years ago. Danish Foreign Minister Lene Espersen said she was "deeply concerned" about the situation and expressed her sympathies to the Danes on the boat and their relatives. "It is almost unbearable to think that there are children involved and I can only sharply denounce the pirates' actions," Espersen said. Government officials will do "everything in our power" to help the Danes, she said, but would not be able to release detailed information about their efforts publicly, "since experience shows that it doesn't help in resolving the case." Danish news agency Ritzau, citing Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Charlotte Slente, said the boat was believed to be heading toward Somalia. Earlier Monday, the European Union Naval Force said Somali pirates hijacked a Greek-owned cargo vessel with 23 crew on board. The MV Dover was seized Monday in the north Arabian sea, 260 miles (420 kilometers) northeast of the Omani port of Salalah, the naval force said. The MV Dover was on its way to Yemen from Pakistan when it was attacked. It was registered with shipping and naval authorities. There are three Romanians, 19 Filipinos and a Russian aboard the Panama-flagged vessel. There is no communication with the ship and no information regarding the condition of the crew. In a separate incident, pirates released the MV Izumi on Friday, the naval force said Monday. The Panama-flagged vessel and its Filipino crew of 20 are believed to be making for a safe port. There is no information on the condition of the vessel or the crew. The ship was taken in October. Somali pirates have extended their range east and south after increased naval patrols in the Gulf of Aden. They hold more than 660 hostages and some 30 vessels. If a vessel's owner is unable to pay the multimillion dollar ransoms the pirates demand, they may keep it and use it to stalk other vessels until they run out of supplies or break down. |
