Will there be enough buyers of the 1190RS by BW members to justify a separate section?

I am ecstatic about the new 1190RS and that Erik Buell Racing is back into the streetbike business.

That said, the 1190RS appears to be a means to an end. The "end" is to race. The 1190RS homologation is the ticket to the dance.

I'm sure that there are a few folks on BW who could afford a superbike, but I'd be surprised if many could.

As much as Erik enjoys the Buell fans, this bike doesn't seem to be for them. That's ok, we can wait a little longer. It ain't a bad consolation prize.

I can easily afford it once I finish paying off the notes on my 1125's, but thats about a year and a half away as it stands. Trust me, I want one!

Ok... how many on BW own either several high value bikes, or a really high end bike like a 1098R etc? I know there aren't many, but there'd be a few, and they might buy an RS.
Knowing the people here, I'm guessing some of those people would also be discrete and humble (best word I could come up with) about buying an expensive bike too, and may not exactly crow about it, if you know what I mean.

How about a new section for Erik Buell Racing produced bikes - 1190RS, 1190RR, 1125RR and future.

Besides Pegasusraceteam, has anyone else bought an 1190RR?

I think I can swing it, I think. I would rather have the 35 acre plot of land I am looking at. Both will be good investments but I would have to ride the bike. As much as I would like to store it in the living room (I think Lynn would go for it) I would have to get it out on the street looking for in-line 4s. I am lucky to still have my license after owning the 1125R.

I wonder if I could put a race track on my land?

I know one dealer that has pledged to carry Erik Buell Racing bikes. I am looking forward to going to see it if I can. Of course that may be a mistake. If I can finance it I better not look.

It is a fine looking machine. Although people can draw a line between 201l and 1983 there some major differences. I think one of them will be brand recognition, something we really did not have before.

This is a time that people talk to me when they see the bike. Just about every time this week. They want to talk racing and Erik Buell. I do not know a lot about either but I hope my enthusiasm rubbed off a little.

Amazing, under Harley, everyone said "hey, isn't that made by Harley". And now, "hey, is Erik Buell making bikes again".

Just amazing. I hope they win big!

Oh, I hope they sell like hotcakes. I hope my question didn't come off as naysaying.

I'd be willing to bet after the press gets their hands one one, it will be the hottest superbike going.

My point was more regarding core buyers. I couldn't justify/afford a new Buell at even half the price of the RS. If the next round of bikes (per the interview video) is in the ballpark, many who are Buell through and through will in all probability be on the outside looking in.

I can't imagine a meaner thing to do with any bike created by EB than to hermetically seal it away and not ride it.

I know, though, I would be petrified if I owned one to ride it.

believe me i debated on grabbing one. it could have been a possability, then i bought a truck instead. ya, i know, but it was the more appropriate decision for me currently. it was just a hair below the even more appropriate to save the money... the decision i didnt make... lol

Hehehe : D... but you know you want to look, don't you...

Thats one reason I like this forum so much.
Likewise!

I know what you mean, but I bet I would gingerly do my best to put it through it's paces and let it show me how inadequate my riding skills are! : )

This 1190RS is not for me either, but then neither is a 1098R or 1198R or similar. I could however see myself buying, say, a standard 848 or 1198, and my guess is there will be Erik Buell Racing equivalents in the not too distant future. 2 years maybe? A 2013 Erik Buell Racing 1190R? And maybe an 1190S or 1190X...
Is it time for a future product speculation thread yet???

The other plus side of the 1190RS is that it looks like development of the 1125 "platform" will continue for a while at least, so hopefully this will mean we see some more goodies becoming available for 1125R/CR's : D (Eg wheels, brakes, bodywork, airboxes, exhausts)

Erik Buell:
Gene and I just drove the truck back from Indy. Geoff, Jodi, Boyd and Jason were there as well which was cool. The show was a great success for us. People absolutely love the 1190RS. Dealers, media, and industry folks all were very complimentary. So we are really pumped up for the next batch of hard work getting production up.

I wonder how hard it would be to make an 1125r replica of a 1190rs. Like when they start selling the replacement parts for this thing then stick them on a 1125r or something.

Some here claim the "fire sale" brought "trailer trash" to this board.... hmmm I wonder what the addition of well heeled upper crust 1190 owners might do to the BadWeb colony?

you know I really hate when "they" say trailer trash because I do in fact live in a damn trailer and I do in fact own a buell...I have had 3 of them total (2 at the same time for a while) and I bought all of them except one pre fire sale and the one I did buy post fire sale was used so I did not buy it from a dealer.

but on a side note seeing upper crust and trailer trash in the same sentence makes me think Beverly hillbillies.

>>>>you know I really hate when "they" say trailer trash

Don't let it bother you. I'm the one who said it and it's most frequently featured light years out of context.

I have no personal interest in owning an 1190RS. But, I am well aware of why it exists. Tough to be a RACING company selling mopeds, head scarfs or electric motorcycles. You have to be able to do what you do and do it well.

It also have provided the folks at Buell what they need to bring the attention of dealers (that's going better than expected and oh what a pleasure after years of being cut off from some of America's best dealers) and media.

It's not secret to the media that Harley-Davidson, another American motorcycle company, had a race team for over 20 years, spent over $50,000,000 and really never mustered an outing that went much beyond the struggling novice level. What Harley-Davidson did to their race team and Buell was not much different.

The 1190RS, with it's premium parts, that demand slow and meticulous assembly, presents the prefect exercise to set up (that's going well too) the production line, put QA/QC measures in place and establish build procedures.

I doubt you'll see more than 2 or 3 of these go to Badweb folks. And, with a bit of sorrow, I'd predict that a good number of them will go to folks who see them primarily as collector pieces. A fellow I know bought one of those $76,000 Ducatis and pretty much ride it only out to get a burger from time to time. Probably half the 1190RS production will go overseas. I don't think Buell has ever sold 50% of it's production in the USA and most folks in the USA don't know or understand how wildly popular Buells are in some overseas venues. I'd not be surprised to see #10-#25 go to "well heeled" Harley dealers to add to their "shelf collections".

The most important thing the 1190RS will do is upset the balance of power this year and yield the concomitant visibility which will help gain media exposure and whet dealer interest.

Without a dealer network, none of those "consumer" bikes make sense.

Fortunately, as a couple of you who attended the Indy Dealer Expo can attest, dealer interest is at a fever pitch and, the converse of above, dealers who could and should have been selling Buells for years, now have unfettered access.

One way or another . . . I think it's going to be an exciting year and there are plenty of surprises in store.

Like I said yesterday . . . I made some bizarre predictions on October 16, 2009 and I'm becoming more confident they'll play out.

We'll see.

By the way . . . there have always been wealthy, or whatever term you want to use, Buell owners.

Some of us remember our old pal who used to come to the factory to get parts and would land his helicopter in the parking lot.

One fabled Badwebber bought a yacht last Wednesday.

Big deal . . that's life and if you judge someone by how much they earn/are worth . . you're in for some huge disappointments. In my wife's last job she worked with 3 young (2 of them under 40) billionaires (with a B). They were, for the most part, about as normal as could be. From time to time they'd do something goofy like fly the entire office to the Mikinos Islands in 3 Gulfsteams to have a birthday party or give the receptionist a million dollar bonus . . but they'd argue over splitting the check at dinner as fast as the next person.

As I have always lectured my sons . . . "any time you think more money will solve a problem, you don't understand the problem".

By the way,a Pro racer friend [100% import] was at Indy and called me to say the 1190RS was one of the most beautiful bikes he has ever seen. Also bringing me back some kind of autographed poster.

Would seem to me, if I'm hearing you correctly, court, that the main goal of the RS is to homologate the best racing bike possible. Is that a correct assessment?

Secondary benefits are dealer interest/buzz, press buzz, assembly line creation/perfecting, and global notoriety?

It would seem to me that the goal is to do what my understanding is Erik has always tried to do, be a racing team that builds street bikes instead of what HD made Buell, "race whatever you got and good luck".

I believe "trailer trash" is a mindset and not a commentary on socio-economics. My dad grew up in a trailer behind his parent's gas station in Lawrence, KS. I definitely wouldn't consider him "trash". I've had some of the most honorable Badwebbers you'd ever met in my home who just happened to live in a trailer at the time. I definitely wouldn't call them trash.

>>>Also bringing me back some kind of autographed poster.

You are a lucky guy . . . Erik and Geoff spent a good deal of time signing the way cool Amsoil posters (see Geoff's Facebook page) and they had as much fun doing it as folks did getting them.

There was an incredible show of interest among dealers and industry folks who have long been aware of Buell but not particularly involved. Now . . having seen what Erik can do, sans his "committee for the perpetuation of common sense and appropriate homage to heritage" . . . there are some interesting and well known folks eager to board the bandwagon.

Quite awesome !

hold on.... in a new high tech digital world, especially with a product that is limited edition and any color you want as long as it is black.... why not do the Kiosk model similar to US Highland? No dealer franchisee, licensing, aggreements

and how many of us have had the notion that one of the biggest barriers to selling the bike, wasnt the bike, or the press about it, but the dealer interaction ?

and I say this coming from 7 years in the trenches at a dealer. The majority of lifestyle grandstation Didnt know Buell.
Why else would you every have an entire line of bikes tucked by the ladies room ?

There is the requirement for homolgation to sell to the public, none of that says it has to be through a dealer network.
The wheel has already been invented, take a peek to Highland.

good read, I read Dave Gess's blog too on how he speculated the price of the 1190.
I want one too but I know I'm not going to be able to afford it, restoring Milly upgrading Uly and fixing Babired this year and buying a little car no matter how much I teach. Then reading Court's "well heeled" HD dealers getting them, first thought was "PUKE" why let them have them? Then I was like thinking they will be the ones who will support Buell in the future, and see what they are missing you know all of the employees will be eying it up
