1.Skip the treats - Any well bred retriever would rather fetch than eat - Lots of LOUD, enthusiastic praise is enough - At the end of the session a few treats & a vigorous pet down 2. After you throw the dummy run AWAY from him - Make him chase you 3. Get a better, softer dummy |

I agree with all above. WRT #3, when I was training Pistol, I had a canvas bag and sewed it shut. Didn't use any stuffing either, it's better floppy. It was about four inches by about eight inches. She loved it, and it throws nice, made a round one too, kind of a soft frisbee. |

Old Flower pot lying in the garden. He plays with anything, we have bits of rope and a small wheelbarrow tyre too. They are the favourites. Thanks, appreciate the advice - but he's not a well bred retriever and no plan to work him. He's a mongrel suburban house dog. Fascinating to watch his brain tick sometimes - 'how do I get that treat?' and he susses it out. I'm actually very happy with the training and his obedience. Just 5 months old and he's already one of the best behaved of the heaps of dogs that go to'big park' - the 4km walk we do around the local reserve every day. There's two dog swimming holes that he loves too. (Message edited by danger_dave on February 16, 2011) |

Nothing wrong with using treats to begin training something - helps reinforce it... after a while, the treats won't be needed. |

I see the long hair is already coming. He'll have a sweet beard and 6" eyebrows soon. |

His buddy Digby is a labradoodle crossed with a spaniel - and his owner could say it all in one word. Dude - where are your legs?
