It's kind of strange. I was able to watch live as Baghdad fell and they tore down the statue of Saddam. Now watching this happen live. Similar sort of jubilance.
My jaw literally dropped when I heard the gut from the CIA state "The Muslim Brotherhood is a secular organization".
That was some serious hoof-in-mouth disease. Beyond that it's a tough call from the US. BO clearly couldn't decide to support one side or the other. They were backed a bit into a corner of choosing between a somewhat cooperative totalitarian government vs. a fledgling democracy.
At this point it is time to offer help to stabilize and move forward to a real democracy. I can't help but think about a certain leader talking about planting the "seed of democracy" in the Arab world. I hope we don't step on the seedling with a giant boot.
Fortunately . . Mubarak gave the United States sufficient time, prior to departing, to prove beyond a shadow of a doubt, that our pursuits of political correctness has neutered our intelligence community.
Also . . if he'd left a day sooner we'd have had insufficient time for Obama, Biden and Clinton to all release, each in their own way, incredibly stupid statements that were not only factually lacking, but came across with a wonderful "better than the rest of the world" tone.
No kidding . . . I've just moved them from "lacking competence" to "total idiot" status.
If we ever need a favor from anyone in the Middle East we're screwed . . if if we do keep sending them billions of dollars a year in "aid" . . . which, as Mubarak illustrates, pretty much gets pocketed.
wagers on the next international incident to catch them with their pants down and heads up their azzes ?.... betting on a lil ethnic clensing and terrorism retribution from the Russians into Chechnya/Georgia/Ossetia. A full summer of dead piling corpses.
And in Russia, muslim is secular, it is seen as a nationalistic THREAT to civil order. THEY aint a church.
I understand the military was starting to fall on the side of the protesters. It's probably a good thing so that you don't wind up with chaos, that simply leaves it open to a power grab.
IT WORKED!!! NOW LETS ALL GO TO WASHINGTON!!!.................
And I do find it interesting that so many people think that this sort of thing could never happen in modern times here in the US. Keep stepping on the Constitution and just see where those who have sworn an oath to uphold the Constitution come down.
yea,.. that statement was 1/2 sarcasm. And I know the military is well respected in Egypt. Military will be making a statement soon, I hope they don't force the people to disperse.
Hey World media and Facebook: Who is next? Jordan?? Saudi Arabia?? IRAN??
Freedom is spreading,.. it seems. I wonder if this the beginning of a totally new Middle Eastern Union.
It would seem there has been some delay in getting the teleprompter ready to make a statement. I really hope they don't have some lines written about reaching out to the Muslim Brotherhood.
ok.. i hope obama does'nt sit there and say...we stand behind Egypt thru thick and thin... etc. etc. and so on..... and then within a year Egypt goes and changes the peace treaty with Israel, or worse.
I'm sure those in Israel are nervously watching this. I really want to be optimistic about this, but it seems like a coin toss to me. The people have a choice to make at least.
Who's making odds here? Will a mostly Muslim country vote for extremism or peaceful coexistence? Place your bets!
Love the Bangles. I hear the lead singer is now a professional dominatrix. (How much cash do I have??)
I'm nervous about the "peaceful, seculur" MB that has already assassinated 2 presidents in Egypt, tried several time on others, and wants to rule the world by the Koran. Hoping we get an Ataturk, and not an Ayatollah. pessimistic, but hoping.
This admin's foreign policy actions are making GWB look like a super genius. Between State, Protocol, and Intel.... we really are being laughed at.
That's not even getting to what an ally feels like when he sees how loyal the current U.S. govt. is. ( only to their own ideals... )
"We will not be silenced, whether you're a Christian, whether you're a Muslim, whether you're an atheist, you will demand your god-given rights, and we will have our rights, one way or the other! We will never be silenced!"
And that wasn't a "fake democratic revolution", it was America, Britain and over 30 other coalition allies kicking Saddam Hussein's regime out of power.
Saddam simply murdered those who opposed him, see Halabja for example.
we are in a hell of a fix now. If they close the S canal---Next Algers gose they close the mouth to the med. and just choke Europe to death. The tree hugers have forced our deep waater rigs to go over seas. We are 5 yrs. late now in starting amassave drilling program. Damn those tree huging Liberals. I dont think any one in D C can see any further a head than thier nose.
