I can't decide what I've enjoyed more; being called an idiot for believing in God (new BadWeb) or being called an idiot because I installed a RSS (old Badweb).
There ya have it . . . turns out I am a DOUBLE IDIOT!
One thing that we haven't addressed but is, until other options arise, the absolute true fact, Badweb is an enthusiasts board for a declining object of affection.
We aren't gaining folks as "new owners" any more. As a result, we are seeing our ranks dwindle until Buell is reborn. We are the new lighthouse keepers.
We have had many join in the fire sale. We've had many leave since the announcement. Much of the behavior is driven by the fact that people don't really have to be nice to folks they will probably be leaving the company of anyway. One of the things about BW that I have loved IS the fact that you are likely to meet these folks in real life. Hell, some might even crash on your couch.
For the most part, off topic discussions exist in the Quickboard section of BW. The rest of the board will take the occasional side trip but remains mainly on track for motorcycle related discussions.
By sanitizing the board of any non-motorcycle related discussion, you rob the board of the deeper understanding of character. There are some genuinely noble folks who would remain two dimensional without the off-topic content. This is good and bad. There are some really unpleasant people that lack the ability to have a discussion without it getting personal.
Why punish those who CAN have a civil discussion because of those who can't?
If the topic isn't one you care about (or care to discuss), don't. The same holds true for an internet chat board as a camp fire, bar or coffee shop.
Tim, I believe you would make a great addition to the caretaker ranks. I'm basically computer illiterate on here, so your lack of computer fu isn't really a disqualifier.
>>> it's the vehemence that they attach to what they're saying.
I don't see how that should be a factor. I don't pick and choose friends based on their political beliefs. I value opposing views that challenge my own, no matter how vehemently expressed. Within my own family are some of the most opposing views you can imagine. My niece is a cat loving vegetarian liberal who just loves Riverdand. I love her very much, no matter.
I don't think it's cool to hold a sponsor responsible for the personal views of any of its employees either.
That said, I'd not knowingly do business with a communist or rabidly anti-Christian bigot.

Yep, no need to be any kind of computer expert. You just have to be able to take the heat and click on the "" (move post) button.
It's not just here,it's every place I go on the net or in public/in person that I see people speaking out on anything..... sooner or later. The Net has made it easy to be dumb.... with believing bogus writings. Where did we bad mouth or promote anything before the Net?
I happen to find many of the "off topic" threads fascinating. Others I simply ignore. The political threads here are much better than at a political forum simply because we have a more diverse slice of the population than you would normally get from a political forum. Same thing on religion or other "off topic" topics.
I was very surprised with the responses I got recently when I asked about reloading ammo. There were probably more good responses than you would get on most gun forums. For those who don't care for guns, I hope they were able to avoid a thread that stated it was about reloading ammo.
Is it possible for a non-moderator to flag a thread as something that should potentially be moved? That would at least make it possible to draw the attention of a moderator when a thread has gone off topic. I do agree that there are threads, such as this one, that don't belong on the other areas of BadWeb.
Is it possible for a non-moderator to flag a thread as something that should potentially be moved? Check here, choose you favorite, and shoot them a PM about the offending thread. It works most times...

Ahhh. . . just like 1992. It's a cycle, not a trend . . I'd wager.
Two very good comments.
1) Yes, you will get better feedback here, for instance the reloading post, than on many other forums. Buell owners, historically, have tended to be passionate folks. It doesn't matter if it's their motorcycles, guitar or cough....cough. . YACHTS
2) >>>The political threads here are much better than at a political forum simply because we have a more diverse slice of the population than you would normally get from a political forum.
Keen observation that is. The political forums, not sure I'd dare set foot on one, would certainly, I'd guess, tend to be stratified about a viewpoint (much like Badweb is Buell-centric) and any opposing viewpoint will most certainly be an intellectual fish out of water.
I enjoy listening. You loose me when the argument starts. I used to stay and mix it up . . . then, as the original poster observed, it occurred to me that not one thing said here, beyond entertainment, impacted my life in anyway. Now when someone goes stupid . . I click off.
Bit of shame . . . I kinda miss watching Grizzly and PaulinOz argue . . .but, that's nostalgia and I miss Jimi Hendrix too . . I'm a happier guy staying out of the fracas.
Thanks Glitch. I see that there's a Custodians link at the top. At least that provides a means to alert a moderator to an issue. I would hate to think of a moderator actually having to read every single post. I know of forums where moderators actually preview all posts before they are public. Those are not good forums BTW.
Sometimes I like to chat politics/religion/relationships/home-repairs/guns/ electronics/dogs . . . with people I like to think are at least a little like me.
Please don't change anything
Sometimes the threads annoy me - Know what I do, I stop opening them
I agree with ya No_Rice. I have been finding myself venturing out to other boards lately because there just isn't much to read here anymore. Kinda sad.
I think a lot of this would be solved if Politics and Religion had its own section. Why is that so hard?
i dont wish to stop the threads, i just wish to contain them a bit more into someplace they should be. yes like the quickboard or a whole seperate section.
i for one have started my fair share of nonbuell related threads here on the quickboard. i am always amazed at the collective knowledge on absolutely everything. ive come to figure that if i cant come up with an answer to a question on badweb, then it doesnt exist.
kind of like the fact that i dont go to the old school board to ask questions about my 1125. now i am sure many that frequent that section could answer things about an 1125, but thats not the point of the old school board...

that is one of the things that ive been thinking about. i know it doesnt change my life either way, and i am not losing any sleep about any of this. but the point is that i am having to "click off" of more threads then i get to click on anymore. its taking away my enjoyment of badweb.
this has all just been an observation, and an opinion... one of those things which i have far to many of!
I for one have on occasion had my opinion on certain points changed as a result of the non-Buell discussion here. To me that makes them very worthwhile. If nothing else it helps me understand a different viewpoint when someone will take the time to have a dialog. I don't care much for the hit and run type of posters though.
I don't really understand the desire to have another non-Buell area on BadWeb. That is what the QuickBoard is for in the first place. I have my doubts that creating a new area for political/religious discussions would really increase the number of motorcycle threads. It's not like there's a finite number of threads that can be hosted at any given time, and threads don't drift into the wasteland all that fast.
...though I cannot fail to credit my amazing friend Jerry Haughton who turned his entire PACBOG horde onto the place...
Bait to get me to come out of hiding? OK, I'll bite.
Blake, not many people would ever accuse me of being amazing. My Mom and kids, perhaps, and Denise for sure (thx Babe!), but you? You need to get out more, amigo.
My vote, back in the days that I had a finger on the nuke button, was that politics and religion were fair game on the Quick Board, as long as the participants remained civil and respectful of opposing viewpoints.
Happens some, but not enough. Shame, but that's the way it is. That said, I'm still of the same mindset: This is the QB, it doesn't HAVE to be about motorcycles, but it SHOULD be cordial and civilized.

I had a lovely lunch with Dave Barr this past Sunday. His main squeeze these days is a '10 Ulysses, and he LOVES it! So much so, in fact, that his beloved Sportster languishes in his garage under a tarp. Dave's a great ambassador for Buell and all that is good about this sport, and I think it'd be a way-too-cool dealio if BWB could get behind him in some way.
No, he didn't ask me to say that.
And hey, didya notice how I cleverly spun this post around and pointed it back at Buells?
wtf? lol And where have you been? Haven't heard much from you lately.
Once, long ago there was a particular breed of forum troll known as Buellgrrrl... Many here will remember her escapades.
As for me, I've been driving all over creation, expediting airfreight to it's intended recipients. I drove through the snowstorm from Suwanee GA to Bowling Green KY last night, and back home this afternoon... Tennessee highways were in bad shape, like giant sheets of ice. I actually saw 15 Fedex trucks all jack knifed on a bridge together in the same spot which caused gridlock out onto interstate 65 where other trucks went sliding off into medians and off the sides of the highway.
Thanks to my new BF Goodrich Radial Long Trail T/A tires, I didn't even have to chain up. Slow and steady gets the job done.
Over 15,000 miles in January, and I'm well on my way to even more miles for February.
"it occurred to me that not one thing said here, beyond entertainment, impacted my life in anyway."
which is why i havent watched TV in countless months. This board is way more cordial and polite and full of actual information vs emotion than the other boards I post and lurk on. I have learned some great things here, been turned on to some decent trends, and met some great and fun people; even changed my mind on a few things (damnit)
My only complaint.... It does seem that most of the events are out mid west way, which I understood from the factory point of view.... It just makes it difficult for a left coaster to come to stuff like March Madness, Homecoming, Buell Toberfest, the Halloween Run.....
basically I am just jealous <sniff> one of these years I am going to make it across the country for a Big Buell event. Probably not this one, as they are cooking off another riotous year of slavic/islamic ethnic cleansing.
I eat my vegetables, recycle, compost, use nontoxic cleaners when possible, practice random acts of kindness to make myself feel like I care, and have maintained an affinity for Buells since the early RR series came on the scene. Yet, I'm not universally loved. Sniff.
It appears to my jaundiced eye that BadWeb constantly maintains a balance. I originally came here, not for companionship, but practical knowledge I could use.
Balance is not equanimity. Balance is this weighed against that. Equanimity is composure. Composure lacks passion.
Pardon me while I go measure my tolerance boundaries.
FWIW, I suspect yours and Dave's political and religious viewpoints are nearly identical. You guys ever decide to run for office, you've got my vote. :-)

'Slicker, the umpteenth annual episode of SPLASH (SPort Lap Around St. Helens) is coming up again in July:
This run is the spawn of Blue Groove/Northwest - anybody remember that gig? Erik was there, Court was there, Reg was there, Fran Crane was there, and so were 125 other rabid Buelligans. We had so much fun that I spun it off into SPLASH the following year, and the good folks up in your 'hood have been at it every July since.
I see this year they're talking about doing the Aufderheide in the Oregon Cascades. OMG, that is One. Yummy. Road.
