are we certain she was on her cell phone? I've watched it several times and it doesnt appear she is. What is odd is that the van in front stopped at random in the middle of the road. This mightve been a huge cause of the accident, no one expects to be in the middle lane and stopping in the middle of a block. whatever crazy video lucky guy |

Hybrid, if you look through the rear window of the SUV, you can see a car in front of them coming to a stop too. At 9 second in, you can see over the roof at what I believe is a row of stopped cars. You can get a good look at the car in front of the SUV at 28 seconds in. It appears to be far from the next intersection, so I am not sure why the cars suddenly stopped. |

Situational Awareness. You've gotta have it. Know your outs & be ready at all times. I have no idea why he didn't move to the right at the very least. Or pull to the side of the stopped SUV... just in case. Glad he lucked out! All's well that ends well! |

Ever since I almost got rearended and pushed into the intersection with cross traffic, I always watch my mirrors when I'm stopping. Yesterday, while driving my white work van, I had a young mother do a right turn on red right in front of me. I would have smashed right into her child's door if I wouldn't have hit the brakes. Even after I turned on my brights while right on her bumper she acted like she did nothing wrong. Drivers are absolute morons any more. |

>>> Even after I turned on my brights while right on her bumper she acted like she did nothing wrong. Just wondering Mike, what did you expect her to do? Having accidentally pulled out in front of someone before, it's tough to get all indignant about it when the shoe is on the other foot. Just be happy an accident was avoided. Unlike in the video. Incredible how he landed on his feet considering the destruction of his bike. I guess the rear of the bike was lifted up catapulting him, or the front of the SUV punted him. |

You can tell he had nerves of steel. When he looked down at the ground, the seat was still pretty much intact. Not only would I have sucked vinyl, when I looked down I might have seen the entire seat had disappeared! |

Watching your mirrors and positioning yourself only does do much. I doubt the reaction times of mere mortals are enough to read that the car behind you isnt going to stop in time, AND maneuver out of the way. Its possible, maybe, but you would have to be so hyperaware at every stop sign and intersection, youd be exhausted before you rode out of town. Youre better off wearing bright reflective gear, having flashing brake lights, and a loud exhaust. Go ahead, loud exhaust activists, but more attention is sometimes good. Until then, petition your local congressman and senator for the illegalization of cell phone use behind the wheel! (if it isnt illegal already) People who text and drive deserve to have their thumbs removed with acid or eaten off by fire ants. |

soco - agree with cell phones, but again I have to ask - are we certain this had ANYTHING to do with cell phones? |

I cant see a phone in the video, but its one of my favorite soap boxes. Its hard to tell from the video, but I think the rider was on the brakes kinda hard because he wasnt riding far enough ahead of himself. It looks like he comes to a stop at the same time or very shortly after the van in front of him stopped, and if you stop at the same time as the vehicle in front of you, you shorten the distance and reaction time allowed to the vehicle behind you. The old lady just didnt stand a chance if she wasnt paying attention. |

AFAIC - He did nothing "wrong" besides open himself up to the fickle finger of fate. In this situation simply merging to the right or left instead of reaching for the brake lever & stopping behind the other vehicle like you'd do in Driver's Ed with the "teacher" next to you was the wrong thing to do. It hardly looked like a panic stop. Hell, once in a while if there's lots of oncoming traffic then I might just continue past my turn & come back from the other way instead of using my right to stop in a moving lane of traffic if I think the driver behind me might not be ready. Sometimes just having the right of way may amount to squat. Sh!t can & will still happen, but learning to always be aware of what's in front of you (or Behind or Beside) you is crazy important. For some it's natural. It's all random anyway. Eventually something will happen that you could never had anticipated in 1000 years & you may be screwed. ...will it happen in your lifetime & what can you do about it is what I'm talking about. Riders (& drivers) like that are the same people who typically come to a stop at the Yield signs in round-a-bouts & can't figure out how to merge into our out of traffic property either. (More personal pet peeves of mine.) If being "hyper-aware" wears anyone out, then maybe pick another hobby or mode of transportation. For some it comes natural & happens without a 2nd thought. Others have to work on it. The alternative is to throw on the all of the high-vis, blinky, & noise enhancing products and hope for the best! (Nothing wrong with any of that & I have the Tail Blazer & Path Blazer products installed on a couple of my bikes, but I don't rely on them.) I just about everyone is guilty of using a phone or some other equally distracting device (radio - stereo, u name it...) while driving. It's definitely BEST not to, but we do anyway. Maybe this rider usually would have gone on around without a 2nd thought too, but he was just day dreaming. It can happen. At least he got an awesome video & even better story out of it instead of anything worse! |

Just wondering Mike, what did you expect her to do? I would like to see some acknowledgement that oops, I just screwed up. If I don't see it I figure they don't realize they just about got someone killed. I was right behind a cop once that ran a stop sign. As soon as he did it both his hands came up to the top of his head. I always wondered if he wrote himself a ticket. BTW, I turned my brights on to make her realize that I was right there. Even then she just acted non-chalant. Maybe she went to the Lindsay Lohan shool of citizenship. |

I agree with mike, I like to see someone realize they F-ed up. If it appears they have no idea they made an error, the likelihood of repetition is scary. Also, the jerk in me likes to believe that, because adrenaline is proven to create stronger memories, that becoming visibly unhappy with someone's mistake will lead to them remembering a mistake and thusly less likely to repeat it. |

Expecting other drivers to be good or even considerate drivers will always lead to deep disappointment. Concentrate on being safe and getting home without trouble. |

it only takes 2 seconds with your eyes off the road in front of you to increase your risk for a crash. Total Control teaches a "relaxed attentivness" You want to enjoy your ride but not trying to scan for everything all the time, you do look for clues way ahead of your path and ride relaxed in the saddle. If you tense up and something occurs then you have to release tension and then start to react and the seconds you just ate up by tension are gone. The guy who rear ended me, I never saw it coming he didn't even hit the brakes the dude was drunk. There were no clues I was positioned to the left about 10 feet from the car in front of me, I had an escape path but didn't have time to get out. I do scan my mirrors but in my case I was close to home and looking at the 3 lanes of traffic and 2 intersections in front of me. One of my pet peeves seeing other riders put their bike front tire like 3 feet away of the bumper of the car in front. Not even a chance for them |

One time while dropping my kids off at school, the roads were wet and cold. I stopped because the traffic in front of me stopped for a car turning left. I kept some distance between me and the car in front of me. All of a sudden I heard wheels screeching from behind me and quickly gassed my car onto the side of the road parallel to the car that was in front of me. The car that was skidding (because they were not paying attention) stopped an inch from the car that was in front of me. Traffic moved on and I thanked myself for keeping a safe distance from the guy in front of me. It saved my family's life. I learned that from driving a motorcycle. |

Is it just me or did the SUV in front have only 1 working brake light out of 3? |
