High in omega-3 fatty acids which are good for fighting inflammation and promoting good blood flow. I take them due to previous heart problems. |

My mom gave me a bottle for Christmas. I was puzzled... She said that my Dad had been taking them after his quad-bypass a couple of years ago. OK...I said. Then she told me that at one of my Dad's recent Doctor appointment they asked the Doctor about some new hair growth (on his head...) and the Doc explained that it's been reported that it is not uncommon to experience new hair growth when taking fish oil. Can you deduce what my Mom was trying to tell me? 1313 |

I can personally testify they didn't do a damn thing for that for me! BTW 1313- heredity is the #1 risk factor in heart disease. DAMHIK. Start doing something about it now. |

In the right dosage (key statement), better than placebo in depression treatment. Omega 3's good for cardiovascular health. Anecdotal evidence to support benefits in treatment of psoriasis. Anti-inflammatory properties. That's about the best I can come up with off the top of my head. Make sure the oil comes from small fish (I can't remember the names), so they have no (less) mercury content. It can't hurt. My garndfather used to say (loosely translated) If you have a problem, you can throw pig s#!t at it, and it probably won't get any worse. |

I take some; it has very noticeable unmistakable beneficial effects. Good stuff. Just one or two 1000 mg (not sure why they don't just say 1 g) gel caplets a day. |

I made fish oil at my previous job, and it didn't come from fish at all. They grow algae and then split the cells with hexane, gather the crude then my job was to refine it. Really neat process, and profitable to boot. When we drummed out a batch each 55 gal. drum was about 35K. So needless to say they didn't like it when it ended up on the floor. Anyway, if you don't like the taste or smell of fish just don't burp. |

I believe red Krill oil is will do the same and they are smaller pills with less fish burps (Message edited by drkside79 on February 09, 2011) |

Wow, lots of good info here. Seems like it helps in some way for most, if not all of you guys. I read the cod liver oil, while having some better benefits, contains more toxins - is that true? I've started seeing a chiropractor again - x-rays show a number of collapsed discs between L3, L4, L5 and S1, as well some general tightness and lack of movement between T6, T7 and T8 (I can't remember the last time the muscles between my shoulders felt relaxed). To top it off, there's also mild scholiosis in my lower spine, probably from compensating for the nerve pain in my hip and leg when sitting. My main interest in the fish oil was for the anti-inflammatory properties, as this can help with the nerve pain I experience in my back and leg. I think I'm going to hold off on the magnesium for now - my multi-vitamin contains some, and I've been trying to eat better which should boost that as well, but mainly there are actual physical reasons for my back pain that need to be corrected first. If I still have pain after that, I'll give them a try. I need to eat more fruits and vegetables, anyway. |

I forgot to mention, while I was working there we had to test the product before it went into the final mix tank (it has to be a certain % before we drummed it out and if it was too high we mixed it with high oleic sunflower oil). There was an in-line port where we were to pour some out and test it for smell and taste so I was getting the pure stuff right out of the bottle. I can't say it helped any ailments perse, it DID NOT grow any hair, not on my head anyway but lots of people who worked there (we got the gel tabs for free) swore by the stuff. My .02 for what it's worth. |

Cod are longer lived and as such have more time to pick up mercury and other contaminants. A small fish like a sardine is short-lived and thus never hangs around long enough to be polluted. |

Mark, I've not tried it, but fish oil suppositories are supposed to be by far the most effective. Supposedly you instantly forget all about back pain and the like. Here's how it works... You rub a bunch of fish oil on a cucumber... wait; do you have housecats? That could be a slight problem. |

Excellent anti-inflammatory and dropped my triglycerides noticeably. In some people, it raises the LDL cholesterol a bit. It has some anti-platlet properties, so those on blood thinners may not want to take it, but I did the whole time I was on Coumadin, and never any problems. You want to buy a product with as much DHA and EPA as you can find. I use VitaCost.com. BTW, you def need vitamin D and probably magnesium. |

This brings memories.. As a kid growing up in Norway it was mandatory to take a teaspoon of codliver oil every day during the winter months. That stuff tasted horrible! I have since learned that it supplies Vitamin A and D, something needed in the northern climes where the sun don't shine in the wintertime. Other than being a good supply of A and D, I don't believe it does much else. |

Fish oil is supposed to help your cholesterol levels. Now when you take Statins like Zocor that puts your testosterone level in the crapper, so you need testosterone replacement therapy, which raises your cholesterol. http://www.webmd.com/erectile-dysfunction/news/201 00416/statins_may_lower_testosterone_libido Now you know why all the cholesterol lowering commercials are giving way to the Low T commercials. Now if that makes you bummed out we have a anti depression drug we can give you that will subdue your sex drive as a side effect but we can sell you a drug to treat your ED. Big drug companies....you gotta love'em |

I know folks who've taken glucosamine and chondroitin (spelling?) for joint pain and swear by it. It's over the counter and you should be able to find it almost anywhere that sells vitamins |

I just eat sushi regularly, does that count? next in line would be pan fried ruby rainbow trout then baked salmon/steelhead. I was taking fish oil flax seed glucosimine (sp?) and condroiten (sp?) for weeks and didn't notice the difference as much as I did from a heat and ice rotation. |

Xl - something you should really try is core work to help with your back problem. I'm a huge believer in it now. I was having some lower back pain, made me feel like an old man at 31. I started reading up on core work and began doing sit-ups, leg raises, and the plank. The back pain went away after the FIRST time trying it. I'm sold on it. The plank is probably the most effective of them all because it works your entire midsection at once, from front to back. You can also do variations of it, and if done properly, it will strengthen your deep tissue stability muscles which will keep your spine in neutral alignment. It suspect it will also alleviate your neck pain. If you try this, don't do sit-ups or leg raises right away. Do the plank only. (Message edited by boltrider on February 12, 2011) |
