Here is another blast from the past...I'm sure it will sound strange to some....but when I was a kid...I liked to go to the dump and find stuff...back in the day, dumps were nothing like they are now...around here, they were old sand, clay or borrow pits...each one had a caretaker that (usually) lived on the property...you could take the trash or junk in for free, but if you found a treasure, he would charge you a buck or two to take it out. I got whole bicycles with nothing wrong, widgets and whatnots, tools and pipe...the first color tv I ever had came from the dump...dragged it home in a wagon behind my bicycle...took all the tubes out and tested them at the hardware store (where they had a tube tester and tubes for sale)...used money from recovered pop bottles to buy a new tube....went home and put it back together....it worked for years...the local citrus plant used great big rubber bands to tie off plastic bags...I found a box of 2,000 that had been thrown out...I sold them in school for a dime each....until the teacher took a dim view of my enterprise....it was like being one of the little rascals sort of.... |

Fast, I had quite the little business, building bikes from the pieces and parts I found at the dump. $20 a pop for a bike that cost me nothing, then $5-10 to fix them when they broke them trying to be Evil Keneval(sp?) It paid for a whole bunch of space invaders, movies, bowling, and so on. |

I loved riding the 5hp go-cart! Funny story... I started driving the go cart at around 6 or 7years old. My knowledge of small engines was limited.I hung around my dad as he worked on snowblowers lawnmowers etc.. I learned the importance of at least checking the oil regularly. After school was a normal riding time,so after an hour or so of riding I decided that it should be checked. Problem is I didn't want to shut it off,it was somewhat of a pain to get going again. I got nice and close as I pulled the cap off to look at the Black gold level...... Well I never expected to take a shower in it. The look on my moms face when I went running into the house was Priceless! |

* Slide Rules (mine was a Pickett log-log & expensive to hell, like 3 days pay @ minimum wage - Still have it just in case some moron drops the bombs) * Interpolating tables - trig tables, hyperbolic trig tables, log tables, . . . * Alignment charts * And especially analog computers |

I am faster, and more accurate for speeds, routes, and mission planning with slide rule than with calculator or packaged software. and when the software crashes.... because it did frequently - guess who got called in to do the planning and ops brief ? the linguist with the slide rule. |

I have a mini HP that my grandfather gave to me, he taught me to do ballistics with it. It made geometry sooooo easy it was disgusting. It is a pity we never really blew anything up in math class, but in my head I was sinking ships and bombing coastlines with every problem. |
