I know my graphics card won't handle it, that's why I got a PS3. Colin has a bad ass system, I see him getting the PC version. He's a PCGamer hard core
Its been in the works in one shape or another since it was officially announced on April 28th 1997. The project got scrapped several times, including when the developer went out of business a few years ago.
I wish the release date was April 1st, then to screw with everybody they actually release it.
That pre-order isn't mine, but I did have one with Funcoland back in the late 90's before Gamestop bought them out. I just wish I knew where my receipt was, assuming it didn't deteriorate!
I got the demo last week and gave it a good testing. So many things both good and bad about this game. Overall I believe I will enjoy the hell out of it.
I was thinking about getting a digital copy, but I want all the useless crap that comes with the BOS edition. I'll have my steam compatible key in a few hours, so I'll be kicking ass tomorrow night!
Duke Nukem Forever gets mixed reviews Fail to the king
THE KING has finally arrived after a 15 year wait of tense anticipation only to meet with range of reactions, mixed reviews and varied scores.
Duke Nukem Forever has been out for three days but the reviews aren't glowing. Eurogamer gave the latest in the alien crazed shooter series a miserable 3 out of 10 and said, "Your time and money would be better spent reliving his iconic past than bearing witness to this gruesomely mangled resurrection."
The Guardian said, "If this was 15 years in the making, it makes you wonder what they did for the other 14 years and 10 months," and gave it an equally bad score of 2 out of 5.
Some other review scores included a 2 out of 5 from gaming web site joystiq, bit-tech gave it a more average 50 out of 100 whilst PCGamer looked more kindly on the king with a score of 80 out of 100.
There is even a thread on the gaming network Steam's forum entitled, "The king is dead". One user gives their opinion, "It is a mediocre shooter and only achieves its sales with its title." Some users were defending it, though, and one said, "Call me crazy, but I don't care about what critics say, I liked the game and nobody is going to change my opinion."
Well I woke up a little early so I could play a little bit.
Initial impression is that I love it, its not supposed to be revolutionary in game play or mechanics. It's duke. Funny one liners, over the top weapons and boss battles. This is not call of duty, and I'm really glad it isn't. To me it is duke nukem at its core. I don't buy games expecting them to change my life or blow me away like many critics and reviewers seem to.
I'm looking forward to seeing what gearbox does with the series. All in all, if you enjoyed dn3d then you will like this one.
I haven't had much time to play it over the last few days, but so far I love it.
The things I don't like
No real health. You got something similar to Halo and COD where you can get hit, take cover, then automatically heal.
Two weapon limit. Seriously, why can't this be like most games and Duke Nukem 3D where you could hold 10 weapons at the same time, and use keys 0-9 to quick switch them? This just makes things annoying as if you wanted to hold something like the shrink ray to use later when you want to screw around, you need to occupy a space for a valuable weapon.
No mighty boot. Melee attacks are your fist or the boot of the gun you are holding. Mighty boot only comes into play on the occasional execution finisher.
The bonus crap in the Balls of Steel edition isn't worth it.
Some things I love
Interactive environments. One of my favorite things in Duke 3D was going around flipping light switches, flushing toilets, and other similar things. Occasionally they reveal secrets, ammo closets, or other easter eggs. Duke 4ever does similar, you can use a marker to write on a white board, you can pickup feces out of a toilet and throw it at someone, you can get a pack of smokes out of a vending machine. Lots of little things to do if you take your time and look around.
Comedy. The game is full of one liners, corny jokes, internet memes, and sexual innuendo. You can go up to a pool table and start playing, then a girl will say "Duke, you don't have time to play with your balls". They even make fun of the games long delays, Duke gets asked if he thinks the game is good, he says something along the lines of "Damn right it better be after 12 years!"
Good level variety. One level you are walking around talking to people, the next level you are driving a monster truck, the next level you are shooting up the place. A little bit of platforming here and there, and an occasional quick puzzle or some kind of easter egg. It keeps the game from feeling repetitive.
Weapon variety. Traditional pistols and shotguns, to alien laser beams and a shrink ray. Did they also carry over the freeze ray from Duke 3d?
All in all I am very happy with the game. Nothing groundbreaking, nothing new, not top of the line graphics, but it is a nice fresh take on one of the greatest games of the 90's.
