OK, I work for a company that has computers because they have to. Not exactly a cutting-edge group of folks (in their defense, the industry doesn't really "require" tech). I handle all the internet and eBay sales. I am trying to make better ads, so I can make more money What I need to do is figure out image hosting. Our public website is remote-hosted, so I need to figure out a way to get part of our local server opened up so I can link to photos on that section of the server. Without a security risk. And without overloading the server. Does anyone smarter than me have any tips on a) how to do this and b) how to sell the idea to management? |

Not overly computer savvy here, but for what you are saying, it sounds as if a simple photobucket or similar photo hosting site would work for you, with clickable thumbnail or direct links to the images you can then insert in your ads. Zero local server space needed. |

I work in the tech field (20+ years) and while your goal seems simple in concept the security can make it a little difficult depending upon the details. There are a TON of factors that make this a bit more than a black and white question. I would recommend engaging a couple consulting firms in your area, sometimes they'll do a free analysis or at least give you an idea of what options they see as feasible. They may simply recommend your company request a static IP and then install a web server and host/publish those images from your server. Those images could then be linked to from your other hosted website. However at that point you might want to consider hosting the whole thing then. There's a lot of options though so I'd recommend finding a few options. Plus with the backing of a consulting firm you'll have a little more ammo when you approach mgmt. That way it's not just 'your' opinion, you've got professional advice behind it etc... Good luck! Feel free to shoot me a PM if you have more questions.... superdave |

$10 a month with another few a year for hosting and a domain from NetworkSolutions, let them deal with the security. But if you only need a few images for auctions, there are several sites that cater to the auction usage and shouldn't cost a ton of money, as well as a paid Photobucket account. |
