Isn't religion based on faith? That's what I was taught during my K-12th grade Catholic School education. There is NO science based or factual based proof of the existence of God. The Holy Grail? Noah's Arc? The Cross Jesus was crucified on? The Arc of the Covenant? The Holy Lance aka The Spear of Destiny? Where are these items and if so important, why were they not saved? And if they were, where are they? It would only take the showing and dating of these items to change many's minds. But alas...they stay hidden, protected, shielded by by who, the Knight Templar?

Blake, the belief in God is based solely on FAITH. I'm glad that you are strong in your faith. Mine, unfortunately, wavers day by day. I sometimes see something that I truly believe can not be explained by anything other than God's Grace. But then I see other things that I can't believe can't be explained by anything other than science.

I'm a believer in this.....I was not put on Earth to cram my beliefs down others throats. You either believe or you don't.
The only way we will know the "God's Honest Truth" is when we leave this World. Something we are all destined to do.

This whole thread can be easily summed up.

Steve,

>>> Note: just because you don't know or can't explain something in a sportbike BBS doesn't mean it doesn't exist or can't exist.

The reverse is also true.

What are you, Switzerland? ; )

Rocco,

I think there are two issues, scientific and theological. The scientific issue is of origin (existence, matter, energy, the universe, and life). Consideration of that issue need not include anything whatsoever depending upon any religion and ought not to. It is pure science.

The issue of the nature of the creator, "God", is theological. Does God care about humanity or not; how so; what type of God is he/she; what is God's will; may humans exist spiritually beyond our corporal lives...? Those are all theological/religious issues and concern religious faith.

In discussing whether or not atheism is a belief system and/or cause, the title of this thread, we simply look to see if atheists employ faith in their beliefs, and whether they seek to promote their faith-based views. Some do. Those who do, like the instigator of all this, Dave H., are certainly exemplifying zealotry and faith in their beliefs, and to the point of hatefully attacking and misrepresenting the beliefs of others.

But anyway, I disagree that the idea/explanation of a creative intelligence being responsible for our universe and the life in it is a belief that is only based in faith. It is an entirely valid scientific theory.

I do agree that our belief in that creator as the loving God documented in the Bible is an act of faith. By that, I mean much more than just our belief is an act of faith, but that our sincere efforts to honor God's will are acts of faith.

So I guess what I'm saying is that atheism has the same problem as theism concerning origins. It takes a lot of faith to believe that our universe created itself and the life sprang from non-life, especially when considering all the scientific evidence.

The statistical probabilities confronting the argument for life arising from non-life (abiogenesis) are impossible to ignore. In truth, they are conclusive. In a finite realm, it cannot happen.

My take on this is (that) God is ineffable, and no more likely to be "proven" than the Theory of Everything (TOE) contemplated by those down the street at the church of science and across town at the church of reason (philosophy). Apologies to R. Persig.
