I confess . . . with AT&T . . I kind of like being able to surf, send texts and do about anything else while on the phone. Handy during engineering conference calls that go on for an hour or so. |

>>> The antenna layout has been changed on the Verizon phone, presumably because of the different requirements of CDMA vs. GSM system. Only things that affect antenna design are frequency, power (gain), and noise (G/T for the communications nerds). Type of signal processing shouldn't matter. Unless it takes more power or less noise. |

quote:Froggy, he forgot to mention its Wi-Fi. So no cables. I'm also guessing your Palm doesn't do 5 devices at the same time!
Yes, I know its Wifi. On my current phone running Windows 6.5, I use WM-WifiRouter. While I haven't tested it beyond 3 devices connected at the same time, I don't see why it wouldn't support at least 5. One of my friends has a similar Android program on his Evo 4G, so we use that now as its faster than my crummy old phone. The wired tether you mention is my preferred method if I'm just doing my laptop, as its faster and allows me to recharge the phone.

Check out Windows Phone 7, its very nice. Nothing available on Verizon yet as far as I know. |

Court, Wait 6months to a year before you switch, hopefully Apple will decided to finally match the Android competitors and switch to 4g. This should allow for data and voice at the same time on Verizons network. This is assuming that you have 4gLTE coverage. Of course when Apple finally switches to 4gLTE the Android phones will have 4G. |

Blake, I'm not 100% positive... but I believe the CDMA network Verizon uses IS on a different frequency than AT&T's GSM network... so the antenna change makes sense. Either that, or Apple learned their lesson when they beta-tested the phone on the AT&T network |

You could do that with the previous att network "Edge" too. |

Court... where do you hold a conference call that DOESN'T have WiFi access available too? That's the easy way around the CDMA/EVDO limitation on voice and data simultaneously issue. |

Sprint is also on a CDMA network and has the same limitation, but I've never seen it to be an issue. I've never had to surf while talking before, but it would be nice if my IRC session didn't disconnect when someone calls. |

Of course, if you "Skype" your phone calls, it's NOT an issue at all... |

My last activation lasted 18 months and kept me out of country about 270 days a year. Hitting a few countries in a day makes having time to communicate almost nonexistant and hotels dont mind charging you 20 Euros for wifi for a few hours. Some of us became professionals at driving around foreign neighborhoods looking for a signal to read emails and such. Having Verizon is a PITA when traveling abroad because of the network. Skype and wifi is the shnizzle fo izzle. |

This is for ATT iphone users. I have the unlimited data plan for $30. I don't use much internet now. If I tether it's only 2gb for $60. It's an additional $10 for another 1gb if I go over. I just don't know how to guage how much I might use...It will likely only be few hours a week at most. |

I'm not sure what the command is with ATT, but there should be a phone number you can dial that will text you all your minutes and data usage for the billing cycle. You can use that to determine how much you have been using. If you plan on tethering, I recommend you download a bandwidth meter like TBBmeter or Netstat to keep track of your usage. If you don't hit youtube or other online videos, it shouldn't be anything for you to worry about. |

Skntpig, jailbreak your phone and install MyWi. Stop paying extra to use your "unlimited" data plan. |

Or keep the unlimited plan, jailbreak the phone, and install one of the discreet tethering programs. I don't have anything to tether to, or I would have more info on this. |

PDA Net is your friend. I use it all the time on TDy locations where I have crap internet but great 3G coverage. I will also say something else about Verizon and AT&Ts coverage. Having traveled all over the country the last couple of years I have noticed that AT&Ts coverage is focused at large metros and not so much out in the bushes. Verizon provides 3G coverage even out at the top of "the box" at FT Irwin, CA in the Mojave desert. I also get great 3G reception in most major cities. Only a couple of times have I had problems with 3G on TDY. That was at FT Knox, KY... We were just barely outside of the coverage zone for 3G. Still had great voice/txt/pix though. Just not any 'net. Alaska is the other issue. Apparently Verizon has a contract with an Alskan carrier to share their networks. My phone is a "lower 48" phone and would have to be reprogrammed once I got there in order to share the 3G. Great service for voice/txt/pix, just no 'net. I could have done it, but I didn't need the internet during training and just checked email and BadWeb when I got back to the hotel. Hawaii... awesome 3G coverage and signal, even at the top of Mauna Kea and in at the Volcano. White Sands Missile Range... undisclosed location during testing requiring a 60+ minute drive through the desert. Verizon provides the only coverage. No 3G that far out... but voice/txt/pix when no one else could even get a signal. I have been very happy with Verizon's coverage. Many of the guys that I travel with are also switching to Verizon because of this reliability in coverage. One of them just switched yesterday, dumped his Iphone 3GS for a new Droid X. PDA Net is your friend. |

My iPhone works FANTASTICALLY as a wireless hotspot. Thank God for jailbreaking. I wear my $30 unlimited data plan out. I can put the phone in a charger in my car and run my laptop off an inverter for hours of internet usage. Makes driving more fun too. Gotta try it on my bike. |

I'm happy to see Verizon getting the iPhone but Apple is falling behind in smartphone technology and I think when my contract is up on my current Droid, I may look at the new Droid Bionic that is coming out this year. 4G with dual core processor and 512 mb ram. But who knows what will be available in a year! |

I spent the weekend in DC tethered to his Sprint HTC Evo and took advantage of the 4G in DC. Freaking fast, pulled about 10 Megabits per second depending on signal. For the hell of it we connected 10 devices simultainously to it, and ended up using 2.6GB of bandwidth in one night. |

I'm not sure what the command is with ATT,... Froggy and friends, on a AT&T iPhone pull up the keypad and dial *DATA# (*3262#) and press call. It will send you a text with your balance. |

>>>Or download the AT&T app that tells you your usage, account balance, plan features, etc. "My AT&T" Fabulous . . and you can change plans and features as you wish. I added "AT&T World Connect® which makes my International calls MUCH cheaper . . of course I wish I'd added it before talking to Holland and Australia and finding out at the end of the month I was paying $7.00/minute . . OUCH AT&T does everything well .. . except telephone. |
