Went to drive my 06 Canyon this PM noticed front tire flat as hell. No problem, get the spare out, change tire. take flat to be fixed. BIG PROBLEM the spare will not drop - The "secondary latch", whatever that is, only allows wheel to drop about 3" Repeated procedure per the manual about 6X so far & still will not drop. Does not drop far enough to really see the cable mechanism but sprayed & prayed w/ WD 49 & HD cable lube & think I hit the mechanism but to no avail. Dealer does not consider it warranty & will not pay for a tow or put a mechanic in the courtesy car to get the spare down. Unless you can help me my choices seem limited to either a. Pay for a tow to the dealer - or - b. Get it up on jack stands, remove the wheel, get the tire fixed & drive to the dealer where removing the mechanism is their problem (w/ the hope that it ends up in the nether regions of whoever designed such a complicated device for such a simple task) SUGGESTIONS PLEASE Would help if my elderly posterior was no in slush while doing this |

Louis- I found this post on a GMC/Chevy forum where a guy had the same problem:
quote:My simple task yesterday of swapping a full size spare for the donut spare that came with my 2005 Colorado turned into a two hour ordeal because I had an extremely difficult time lowering the donut spare. Much of the two hours was spent trying to figure out how the secondary latch was supposed to work because the tire would not lower enough to get a clear view of the mechanism and the owners manual was only so much help. In the end the problem was rust in the secondary latch of the spare tire hoist. There is a lever on the hoist that hits a cam like secondary latch release that in a perfect world would have released the spare. Because it was pretty well rusted the secondary latch would not move even after following the instructions in the owners manual. The only thing that saved me was I also had my 2007 truck at home and I was able to lower the spare and get under there and figure out how it was supposed to work. Of course I screwed around with the badly rusted '05 mechanism for far too long before looking at the '07. So I sprayed down the rusted mechanism with PB Blaster penetrating oil and I eventually got it to break free and the tire finally released and I was able to lower it. My advice is to check out your spare at least once a year if you live in the rust belt like me. Do it in the middle of summer instead of a thirty some degree day like I did. My '07 has only gone through one winter here in Detroit and it was on its way to rusting, too. I sprayed down both secondary latches with PB Blaster and added white lithium grease for good measure. If I had been on the road and needed the spare there was no way I could have gotten it down off the truck. So save yourself some grief and check out that hoist!
Maybe this will help. |

Lose the WD40 and get some real penetrating oil, like PB Blaster or BG's En-Force. You'd be better off soaking rust in coca-cola than using WD40... |
