OK, I have read a lot here about disappearing into the backwoods to a remote cabin, about guns, about knives, about survival strategies. But I have also read stuff, for example, by Blake and/or others, about living sustainably, within one's means. That is about "surviving" in a very real, albeit less extreme manner. Somewhere between 2012 apocalyptic survival strategies and day-to-day sustainable lifestyle, there is another realm of survival readiness: about community, about resilience and adaptability, about readiness for inevitable crises in the ruling global banking empire that are now and will continue to affect us all. Here are some key phrases from CSPER.org that start getting to what I am talking about:
renew spirituality, psychology, and economics
restore philosophical freedom
return to mutual horizontal relationships in society
revive lower scale centers of power (neighborhoods, towns, states)
How ready are you, as individuals, families, and communities? Check out CSPER and Chris Martenson, among others. It's interesting reading/viewing, and goes way beyond Blue/Red bickering that entirely misses the point.
If I can every come up with any spare funds, I'd really like to get a large storage cabinet for my basement and stock it with bottled water, TP, hand sanitizer, non-perishables, some medicine, etc. Just in case.
And on the uber-paranoid side, a Ural Patrol with spare fuel and a box of electric bits tucked away in a Faraday cage. (yup City, that really is part of my interest in Ural)
cool, I would love to have a cabin made of the older timbers.... but we have barns here that I can disassemble for cheap, I have had a couple of people pay me to remove and old shed or out building.... and hello free lumber I would like to use it to build my own Walden cabin. I will post pics as I get her going
question....if you are taking down all the snow fences.... what stops the drifting that they were set up to prevent? or is there a new governement bail out to replace them with a new 'Green' technology ......

They no doubt have a program for renewing them after a number of years - maybe they replace one area or section per year.
If anyone feels inclined to spend about the same amount of time as a long feature film watching a fascinating and, to my mind, vital series of videos by Chris Martenson, called his "Crash Course" on issues dealing with the inter-relation of the economy, energy and the environment, and ending with an idea of how one might think about preparing for any changes to our lives brought on by any changes or problems with those systems, I would suggest you check out his site, and you can watch his "Crash Course" for free:
He also offers an interesting pdf self-assessment form for getting an idea of how prepared we are for weathering any storms. For me, the system is so broke, and D.C. so off-base on both left and right, that some sort of big changes, willed or un-willed, are bound to be happening that will affect us all, and I am thinking of how to prepare myself, my family, and friends and loved ones.
go camp for a week, off grid, make a list of the things you need that you didnt bring with you..... when you get back, go through the house and look at all the things you didnt miss while you were gone garage sale those items
Life with a go back its by the door, one bag for ammo and guns the other 3 weeks food and water purification. tent and campsuppliesa re arlready in the truck lock box. I am off the grid and out in under 30.
then again, I dont have kids, pets, spouse, boss, house, etc
Home in your Pack by Angier, great check lists, simple ideas to get out and camp/hike....same same.
also Into the Wild, a great book about what is really important, and how f'd up it can get if you eat the wrong berry plant ! best not make that mistake!
Don't anticipate the apocalypse but sure to hell suspect some hard times ahead.
Enough canned goods to carry you for a few weeks. - If something canned is on sale buy 2X what you normally would, ditto dried foods such as peas, beans lentils & pasta; mark the date w/ a permanent marker & rotate your stores.
Enough water to carry you for a few days + water purification tablets.
Not very glamorous but gardening tools in your shed & garden seeds in sealed containers in your basement will carry you a long way. You can always spade up your suburban lawn & plant a bigger garden while living on your canned goods & dried foods. - Garden seeds are cheap & take very little space.
I would like advice on something. - I would like to purchase a few bags of old, silver coins. - Not for the numismatic value, just because I think that would be a convenient way to hold silver. Any suggestions on where to purchase old silver coins by the bag without getting hozed??

That is the problem with precious metals. You buy them then immediately sell them back to the same person and you are out money.
When it hits the fan you will need things that can be bartered. Food, water, seed, guns & ammo.
If you anticipate less than that sort of hard times, you might be able to invest in gold & silver on the market. You only get the metal on paper though. When it really gets bad as least you will be able to wipe yourself.
someone mentioned a ural earlier in the thread, and Id just like to go on that note for a moment. I just read One Second After adn its a bit scary. Its a bit scary how frail the system is and there most likely are people out there with the means to do that to us (EMP)
Im not building a cabin in the woods or putting all of my money into survival tools, but I see no problem having a few basic things that I could use on any camping trip etc.
Anyway - motorcycles. Now most of our bikes on here (Buell) wouldnt do well with EMPs as they have so much electronics on them. But I started thinking about my little klx140L that I got in 09. It DOES have a push button starter, but it can be bumped off and run fine. We all love motorcycles, what a better 'toy' to get that would also be useful if something bad happened. great MPG fairly quite in case its a zombie attack my bike weighs 200 lbs, I can lift it up all at once slightly, or one end at a time at pretty good heights - so if you had to do recon or lived in woods or whatever, if you meet an obstacle it'd be easy to pick it up and move it over that fallen tree etc.
just an idea. 1000 bucks on a used dirtbike that can be used for multiple things
and for reference - im about 215 (or I was at the time this happened, lost a few lbs since), plus about 15 or so for my racing leathers, so we're looking at 230/235ish for me. I took a buddy to one of my races to help in the pits and he was a little more than me, so with about 500lbs of human on top of my 140 it still did well. All stock 140L. Sure, it was sagging a bit, but it was still able to move pretty good.
was just speaking to an acquaintance the other day about this sort of stuff and he mentioned it as well. Why silver? 1. Old silver coins seem handy, already divided up, unlike gold which would have to sliced up if the stuff ever did hit the fan. - Easy to carry & no big deal if you lose a coin or two. - Everybody already knows US silver coins are real silver. With gold, absent some sophisticated testing would be easy to adulterate w/ lead. (That Archimedes displacement test easier to talk about than do.) 2. With gold the mark up nears 100% - not sure what it is w/ silver but I hope less
seeds, good idea. dumb question, is that something that will expire? If properly sealed, kept cool & dry & away from light the shelf life should be about forever. - No bull they have grown Mayan corn from seeds 1000 years old. But seeds so cheap get some new ones every year when they go on sale @ the hardware store. what about dry beans? if sealed, will those expire? Yeh but; if kept sealed against vermin, cool, dry & away from light they should be good for decades.
In one way shelf life not too important. If the stuff hits the fan in the next couple of years you will use your seeds & foodstuffs well within the shelf life. If the stuff does not hit the fan you can use your foodstuffs up over the few following years & save shopping.
One more thing I think I should get is a hand pump for the basement. - Gets exciting when the power to the sump pump goes out.}
I honestly have my doubts about the viability of a suburban garden in the event of it hitting the fan. There will likely be too much competition for any food source to ever be able to grow anything. Surviving until harvest time would also be difficult in the urban/suburban environment. At least in a wilderness area you can hunt and fish. If the attack is planned after planting season, you will have to enter winter with your short term food supply dwindling. It wouldn't be pretty.
Seeds are cheap and store well though, so I wouldn't say don't stock them. I think that seeds would be like most of an emergency plan when the time comes though, getting tossed right out the window.
The only thing that can make in-town and/or suburban living a plus for crisis times is community. If we all feel we are on our own in this, then, well, we are. And others are de facto against us, stealing from the garden, as it were. Building a community of shared resources, skills, and knowledge is worth contemplating. Not everyone can live far out in the country.
Another thing to think about, similar to the sump pump: how would you heat your house this (or any other) winter if the power goes out, if fuel or municipal gas is not arriving at your home? Got wood? Got solar HW? Got a solar-designed home?
Re: silver: US silver bullion coins are available for just over $30 each (at time of posting). Silver is more affordable than gold, for minor investing. You can actually get these coins, as well as other bullion silver coins from canada, austria, and elsewhere. Even online. It's not just holding the paper on them. I don't think you'd get old coins for any less, since silver is trading at around $28 per ounce right now.
the ural is nice.... and it would pack a lot..... My current set up ford ranger pick up 4x4 canopy to hold supplies bike rack across the back for a Whizzer recon moto (125cc petal/gas mt bike set up) food for 3 weeks shelter water for 3 weeks and means to filter, clean, store and collect
and when it comes 308 with thousand yard range, my highground is not your friend
one second after is good, after reading it my wife wanted to learn to shoot. bonus!
"patriots" is better for those of us that prefer a little more tactical in our porn
they used silver for currency because its value was much less than gold. gold couldn't buy you a loaf of bread but could get you a horse. silver and ammunition was used to trade for everyday things
" The physical properties of silver include ductility, electrical conductivity, malleability, and reflectivity. The demand for silver in industrial applications continues to increase and includes use of silver in bandages for wound care, batteries, brazing and soldering, in catalytic converters in automobiles, in cell phone covers to reduce the spread of bacteria, in clothing to minimize odor, electronics and circuit boards, electroplating, hardening bearings, inks, mirrors, solar cells, water purification, and wood treatment to resist mold. Silver was used for miniature antennas in Radio Frequency Identification Devices (RFIDs) that were used in casino chips, freeway toll transponders, gasoline speed purchase devices, passports, and on packages to keep track of inventory shipments. Mercury and silver, the main components of dental amalgam, are biocides and their use in amalgam inhibits recurrent decay."
I plan on being as far away from 'community' as possible. See y'all in two years. I have already recc'd an off trail plateau that is 3 day trip, and off the map. good clearing, fertile ground, nice game, a stream, and good high ground visibility.
He who travels alone can go now, he that travels with another must wait on their conviences' HDT
Thats selfish !... yep. And on the other side of it, if shiat comes to shove, and I know I wont make it, I am prepared to eat a bullet.
