GREAT stuff. Way better than rice. Fix it like you would rice... boil, add salt n butter. I love the texture... each grain pops a little when you bite into it. They look a little weird cooked though... almost like tadpoles. The germ uncurls, giving the grain little tails.

sometimes i substitute half of the water with beef or chicken broth. adds flavor. it's pretty much a healthy, blank canvass.

Can be really tasty, and is very, very good for you.
I'm all for diversifying the grains we eat, beyond the preponderance of wheat and corn. It's a healthier way to eat.

Look for it in bulk at health food stores for better pricing.

I've eaten it in regular stews, where the quinoa replaced a "traditional" grain like rice, noodles, etc. for a gluten-free dish.

The "popping" SM mentions is an acquired taste. Almost the same texture as some caviar, to me. My brain doesn't always associate it with "grain."

Never heard of Quinoa until now. Am jazzed to try it. Really enjoy barley in lieu of rice or noodles. If you've never tried that, it is really good too.

I like barley in soup. I like it better in beer.

I used to buy the fancy cereal from the health food section of the grocery when it went on sale- check out Amaranth, Spelt, etc. too. Many of these are pretty dang tasty, especially with half a banana, but can get pricey...

It is a nice addition to the grain bill when making bread. It is more of a seed than a grain. It has a nice distinctive taste (your taste buds may differ).

I boiled some up and it kinda had a broccoli smell to it.
A little salt.. a little pepper... not bad.... then I put some tabasco chipotle sauce on it... even better.

I just need to find a cost effective place to buy it

I went "Krogering" today too...

Skipped the stupid expensive stuff there (LOTS), then went to the grocery outlet and paid half-price compared to Kroger...

Mark- do you have a food co-op up there? Sometimes becoming a member at one is worth it... lots of bulk prices, high quality "hippie" produced stuff, knowledgeable peeps, etc...

OTOH, I overheard a Kroger deli worker tell someone "yeah, feta cheese is a lot like ricotta"...

"I may look into farming the stuff!"

Verily - how hard could it be? There's no milling or processing involved. One family's supply couldn't take up very much planting space. Hmmmm.
