xl1200, hands down kahr cw9. i carry it, i love it. i carried an xd, bersa 380 & a 1911. the kahr is super thin, light, totally reliable & has 9mm power. it holds seven. do some research on the 380 caliber its bad. stick with the 9 at minimum.
like all firearms you get what you pay for. i paid $450
The .380s are great looking little guns, but I'm not impressed with what I read on the round intself. 9mm seems to be a minimum. I'm not concerned about wall penetration in my home as I feel (and have) a shotgun is a much more effective home defense weapon. I'm not a particularly paranoid person, but one lives under my bed, unlocked and ready to rock.
Kahr and Kel-Tec also both make sub-compact 9mm that look impressive. I also really like 1911 pattern guns, and small examples are getting more prevalent.
Though, I must I admit, I have expensive taste and LOVE every Sig I see in the case, and the P239 has caught my eye, but may be just a hair big and heavy to be a good carry weapon.
so speaking of concealed carry... can anyone suggest a nice, small 9mm, preferably single stack magazine?
Why yes I can!!!
I just picked up a Kel-Tec PF9 (mentioned a couple times above). A Christmas present to myself you could say.
I LOVE the gun. Super compact, light, and conceals without a problem. It's a single stack 9mm, with adjustable rear sight. I use it without the pinky extension, and it feels great in hand. Kick will be more prevalent because it is light!
I have an inside the waistband holster I like and use the most, as well as an ankle holster and pocket holster.
I'm going to go pump a couple hundred rounds through it this afternoon to get it broken in.

They had maga problems with the first model year, so there are a bunch of poor attitudes around about them, but Kel-tec fixed all the issues long ago, and will repair any first year gun at no charge, so I have no complaints.
I'll report back again this evening.
The only other gun of comparable size is a Kahr, which is well over double the cost, and is known to be finickey with ammo. Anything else is either larger (thicker!) or takes smaller ammo. There are two long video reviews on youtube to watch, here's the first one: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rNRbkOdUgms.
My Taurus Circuit Judge that I got for Christmas is a blast to shoot...and it doesn't suck either! It's timed perfect and if it wasn't and peeled bullets the shrouds around both sides of the cylinder would deflect and protect my arm. All I will use it for is fun but with the right loads I might attempt dear hunting with it (if I hunted). Check out gunblast.com for their review on this firearm.
I see someone else here has a S&W M-P 15-22 too. Yes it is a super fun and economical gun to shoot and it can use most AR-15 add on goodies . It's the best gun money I have spent in a long time . I added a AR-15 handle with a 4x scope mounted on top,it also has a LED light mounted to the business end.
"do some research on the 380 caliber its bad. stick with the 9 at minimum."
Not so fast my friend, I don't know many thugs that could survive 10 rounds of hollow point 380's to the chest. It's all what you are comfortable with, I'll take 22 mags over nothing.
I have the Sig P239, .357Sig. I like it for a carry gun. Bianchi leather belt holster in the small of the back outside the pants. Reasonably comfortable, covers up with a long shirt.
Took my new PF-9 out this evening. I shot about 150 rounds through it. It's light, and kicks like it... but man do I love this gun. I did the usual basic strip down and clean before we went, just to get the factory grease outa there and add some good lube. No polishing or anything like that. I didn't have a single issue at all. I shot three different brands of cheap Walmart ammo, without a noticeable difference between them. The factory sighting seemed very close, it might need drifted just a hair, but it worked for this time.
Trigger pull is long but smooth. Grip is very comfortable and provides plenty of traction. Sights are bright.
I have a Makarov that's a nice small carry gun. Throw some hollow points in it and it's good to go. The most reliable feeding gun I've ever shot. I have tried to get that gun to jam and have never succeeded.
I really like my Xd40 though, surprisingly accurate for a semi-auto pistol.
I've shot tens of thousands of rounds thru my Gold cup 45ACP in pistol league.................with an mere 3 grains of Bullseye under a 165 grain, cast semi wad cutter. A light spring is the trick and it has worked flawlessly. The guns is still as tight as when it was built and still shoots one hole groups at 50' with that load.....
had the debate around the BBq tonite... CQB inside your own house I prefer the shotgun friend is all about his 9mm but then we were looking at the new Ar 'kitty Kat' with 22Lr and a three round burst....
decisions decisions decisions
of course the 45 is right out, that is probably ending up in the neighbors house when it goes off
blastered, i don't know many thugs that could survive 10 rounds of 22 long rifle to the chest either. #1 the thug probably won't stand there like a target while you try to do that
#2 its all about ending the threat as quickly as possible
of course i pray to never need my weapon for that but we were talkin concealed carry.
I have a match grade Colt 1911...it is old, it is beautiful, it nearly aims itself...and with the 230 grain hollowpoints I am quite sure a single round middle of mass will end any confrontation...
Mikef5000: Good Call on the PF9, you have a great gun. I have had mine for over a year, I also use it for cc with a IWB holster. I have put an easy 750 rounds though it with no problems. The only thing I have done is installed a Houge grip cover.
I've got a Sig p229 .40 that's loads of fun to shoot but just a little on the big side to carry, comfortably, concealed. For that I agree with Blastered and have a Bersa Thunder .380 with a inside the pants or ankle holster. Hopefully I'll never ever have to use it but if I do I'm giving myself seven hollow point chances to get away.
I don't know who lives where and what your state laws are on ccdw but I took Ky's class in Nov. and it was very informative. Eight hrs. of classroom and range time, mostly classroom, going over KRS statutes. Now the guy (forget his name right off) running for Lt. Gov. is seeking to repeal the need for a ccdw license. Says any law abiding Ky. resident should be able to carry concealed. Which, IMO, is what it's all about anyway. It's only your law abiding, rule following constituents anyway who are getting their ccdw's and the thugs, felons and illegals who are and will continue to carry illegally.
I agree nukeblue, I would never want to have to actually use my weapon on another person but I do practice extensively just in case and I am pretty confident I could hit a moving target with about half my clip. I have however had to "diffuse" the situation twice and I will protect my family at any cost.
check out ballistics101.com its a neat place to compare energy & velocities of most factory loads. scroll down the pistol caliber thingy at the top left
I've shot a Walther PPK .380. It would be a real nice carry piece except the slide tends to catch the first knuckle on my thumb and tear it open. The owner has complained of it being a less than reliable gun though. Plenty of malfunctions!
Hopefully their PPS doesn't share any of these shortcomings. My only experience with Walther has left me unimpressed and bleeding.
What do you guys think about 9mm vs. 40? Any real advantage to a 9mm?
I have a 9 that I bought in 1992, and it just stays locked up because I have kids in the house and not much time to shoot. However, when I do shoot it on occasion or go to the gun store, I always seem to get .40 envy.
I have a sub compact xd9. It holds 13+1 of 9mm. I don't care who are that many rounds to the head and body are going to leave more than a headache assuming all the hits land.
looks like the 40 has about 50 more foot lbs of energy with typical loads (115gr 9 vs 180 gr 40) i guess people prefer it for the knock down power over the 9. i don't know, its what i have in the night stand and my glock 9 is in the safe piece of mind for me. usually around here the ammo for 40 is about $5 more a box.
that xd9 sub compact is sweet. my buddy bought one for his daughter. i almost picked one up after shooting it.
I like a .45 over a 9mm, but I don't kid myself, either would be a very effective round. I like the .45 because the power is big, because the recoil is more of a push then a smack, and because ammo, reloading parts and processes, and knowledge is cheap and great.
So to me, the .40 seems like an "even worse" 9mm. Sharp recoil, fussier to get ammo or reloading components, and not any more effective at the end of the day.
So I'd go with a .45 if possible, and a 9mm as my second choice.
There have been about three times in my life I felt like I would have carried concealed if I could have legally (have not gotten a permit yet). Just about any caliber aside from .22 rimfire would (IMHO) have been sufficient (IMHO) given a high level of situational awareness (which I try and maintain).
The only time I have seen a big difference between center fire calibers is when I am playing first person shooter games... so if that's my criteria I opt for the railgun with the infinite ammo cheat code.
.45 is surely a more powerful round, but you'll get more rounds of 9mm in a pistol of given size and weight. For me, that would win over the extra grunt of a .45.
If you have a 9mm I don't think the .40 offers much benefit. You will get less rounds in the mag, more expensive ammo that is harder to find, and not much more stopping power. If you really want the stopping power I would consider a .45, but nobody is going to laugh off being hit with a 9mm round.
