Before the web there was Usenet. People forget about that resource because nowadays its too "Geeky." There was also Compuserve (remember that one) and bulletin board systems up the wazoo. Yeah, I remember them all... and even my first 300 Baud dial up (pulse-dialing) modem, too. Even ran CP/M! |

I remember the BBS days well. I was giggling like a school girl when I connected at 14.4 for the first time. It's funny, now when I think about that kind of speed, I consider myself NOT connected. |

Somebody ought to put a wireless access point into a retro 2400 baud hayes modem case. Those things were beautiful. Sadly, I think I threw all mine away long ago. |

Court, Funny you mention that OS 3. I debated whether or not to upgrade Michele's phone last night. As with most all computers, with time the bloat-ware creeps in. The newer apps and OS sure do seem to run slower on my 3G phone. Good news is that I was able to share her old version of the AccuWeather App, so I am again a happy iPhone customer. I have my "Alarms", "Risk", "Alerts", and the full screen radar back, a much better format for quickly seeing hourly and daily forecasts. It even pulled-in all my prior settings and saved locations. Blake, if your wife has a 3G and not a 3GS, she should be running 3.x not 4.x The hardware in the 3G isn't up to it. |

I've been using Weatherbug on my Droid, FWIW. No issues at all with it. |

Jeff, I'm the one with the 3G, and you are right, I've noticed a significant lag in performance. It works okay though. Michele has the 3GS. She didn't even notice the difference today or all the new apps I installed for her. Women. |

the 3G is cray slow. Luckily you had the old version of the app on your wife's phone. The only other way to install the old version of the app if the old version isn't "synced" when you do the backup is to jailbreak the phone, install Installous (from a directory that is not in Cydia by default, you have to add it, but I wo't mention the IP), and download a cracked version of the app that is the software version you are seeking. |

In response to what Guell and Jaimec said about policies and lack of customization- you just need to jailbreak the phone the 3G/3GS (3.0-4.0.2) and iPhone 4 (on 4.0-4.0.2) are the best platforms because the jailreak is untethered and easily unlockable should you prefer a different GSM carrier. You can do all kinds of things on an iphone once it's jailbroken, as long as you know how. I have emulators out the wazoo to play all my favorite games, like Playstation, sega, and nintendo, custom themes, and several tweaks to make my experience with it much easier, useful, and aesthetic. |

I'm not willing to invest the time to learn about the whole jailbreak deal. Seems risky to me. Am I missing something? I'm not interested in gaming. Most used app lately is the kindle. Had no idea how excellent reading on the phone could be. Here's an illustration of what accuweather dropped from their new app, and what I most value about the old version accuweather app...
One screen five day inclement weather "Alarm" summary for rain, snow, ice, fog, wind...
One screen eight hour "risk" assessment for disruptive weather potential.
Full Screen, No Ad, Radar. Rockin'! I've not found any other weather apps with the above features. |

For the record, I never said anything about the iPhone's lack of customization... |

sorry Jaimec, I was more reffering to what you mentioned as their closed strategy. While they do try to keep a lot of wha you do on your iphone on a tight leash, a jailbreak will change a lot of that. Such adding download managers and filebrowsers to allow the use of self-executable files (.dbs and .ipa for example- these are files for apps, but there are other filetypes used to install themes and tweaks as in Cydia). There are also programs you can add to adjust the type of multitasking you want and have REAL multitasking. Oe of my favorite additions is Multiflow, which changes the graphic interface of multitasking to whole screen thumbnails instead of icons (view up to 9 screens just as you left them, click on the one you want to jump to, instead of a bar of icons at the bottom). |

The more I read on these "connectivity threads",the more I love my Star tac. Makes calls, takes calls....RELIABLY.Service plan,a buck a day. No camera,no apps,no texting. Buy them on eBay for a buck. Anything else can wait till I get home..... and do it in comfort on the "big screen" desk top with real speakers. Over the years,I haven't missed a thing...... |

Hah, until you finally get a phone that texts, plays music, takes photos and videos, shows near-live weather radar, and does GPS routing with voice directions. I still have my old StarTac. Nice thing about it was the near instant on. Turn it on and it was ready to phone. I keep it charged up for emergency 911 use. |

I guess I'm too focused on what I am doing myself...... as to what's going on around me.No need to see the next post on forums or to text anyone(I'll just call them if it's that damned important). Never mind the weather,I'm out there in it and can't change it.I can see for miles on a cycle,if it looks ugly....I'm either trapped or will head another direction. I seldom make calls. I will take them or answer messages. No need to call Mommy to explain to me, how to unlock the mail box or that milk is on sale. Socially independent.............ahhh! |
