I'm getting old. Back in the day, Vory v zakone was the old criminal network that operated outside the Soviet system. I'm advised I'm still in the past with that one. Now, everything is international, completely. As long as I can get a vernacular translation here, my sometimes translator overseas, a White Russian born in Shanghai who became a U.S. citizen, called me "Toptuny." He said it meant "handyman," but it could have been a slur for all I knew. In hotel rooms at night, the final conversation would always go, "Goodnight Alex." "Goodnight Max." Then together, "And to whomever is listening, goodnight." Anyway, there is a huge cultural and historical gap between Yanks and Russians. It's much easier for them to adapt to our melting pot than the other way around. But there will be a Russia when the PC police have long since destroyed this country.
