Whatsup all. I've been carrying a Kershaw Leek with Speedsafe for about 3 years now. Saved my life/health/wallet twice now, even though I never had to "use" it. I've been told more than a few times that in a hairy siutation, the Leek wouldn't be ideal for self defense. The handle is very smooth and I've seen questions about the knife strength. So now I'm looking for a new knife before I move back to the city. I can't carry a firearm as my state would rather me be defenseless, so knife is the second best choice. Keys would be speed of deployment (Speedsafe is almost as fast as an automatic and still legal in Maryland, amazingly), strength and ergonomic/grip. Have a few models in mind but don't want to plunk $$$ down for something that will let me down in the case that I need it (been mugged twice now so I'm anxious!). Also planning on taking classes.

Liking the Emerson Krambit Wave and the Zero Tolerance Tanto.

Anyone have any advice?

If you like the Leek just get one that's got the black finish, it provides a very positive grip.

I've been carrying Kershaws at work and off duty for about six years now and really like them. I carry the black Onion for work (it hides well behind my duty belt) and I carry the matte silver onion for general use, it does become slick with moisture. The flat thin grip is nice because you can wear it clipped inside your waistband with the clip mostly concealed by your belt, and the thumb tabs don't dig in. I'd use the Leek at work but the blade is 1/8" too long for policy.

Anyway, I took some metal polish to the body of the black knife, to smooth it out a bit, the finish made it a little slow to deploy. MAke sure the screw on the blade lock is snug enough that it won't lock unless you want it to.

That's all I've got.

I thought about re-doing the handle with something more grippy. I have the all black one and it feels a little slick. They are very handy for general use as well.
Maybe I can just put some sandpaper grip on it and call it a day. Thanks!!

And yeah lol @ the work thing, I've accidentlly brought mine to work. Didn't make it past the detectors... I have to surrender it and sign it out when I leave the building.

it's gotta be whatever YOU feel comfortable with and like, so you will want to carry it. compact. lightweight. ergonomics. your favorite color. it s wrong for me to pick your weapon, like it is wrong for me to pick your nose.

ceramic blades are lighter than steel, but i'd rather not use some thing as brittle as ceramic for carry, cuz if i'm carrying it; i'll use it for general purpose and booger it up.
i like my gerber AR 3.0, and would like an octane. but that's just me.

i reccomend investing a few hours at a gun/knife show. the rarely are not one in the same.

ok i can PERSONALLY vouch for this knife....

http://www.cutco.com/products/product.jsp?itemGrou p=1769

ok here's some of the AWESOME things:

-MADE IN USA: EVERYTHING is made right here in the USA, and has been since 1949, in Olean, NY

- FOREVER WARRANTY: basically for as long as the knife is in EXISTENCE, if you need it SHARPENED, FIXED, or just refinished, all you do is send it in NO QUESTIONS ASKED and whatever needs to be done will be done FOR FREE! and sent back with 2 day shipping.

- the knife will NOT need to e sharpened for 10 YEARS!! (if you get the Double D edge, which is a free option)
- if you need it sharpened they will send someone to , your house to sharpen it if you want also.

- also if you need the knife serviced, you do NOT need a receipt or proof of purchase, just send it in and and the knife is your proof of purchase

-it has the MOST ERGONOMIC handle, it was designed with over 700 pairs of hands....trust me its comfy lol

-also you have a 15 DAY trial that if you dont like the knife you can send it back for a FULL PRICE!

-also CUTCO IS KERSHAW! they are the SAME company, so you KNOW its a GREAT product!

- and cutco was on modern marvels as the WORLDS SHARPEST KNIVES, the ONLY thing sharper than a cutco knife is an AUTHENTIC Samurai sword, but those take like 6months to make so its understandable lol

it cost around 150$ if i recall, small price for something that will last FOREVER, GUARANTEED! and made in the USA!!

Hope this helps,
Jake

personally i love the pearl handle! (read the website about the double-d edge its awesome!)

- also i know the website says you cant buy there, if you decide to, just let me know and i can help out a fellow bueller ; )

If penalty for concealed weapon is same for edged weapon as it is for firearm, why not the gun?

(CA is pretty intrusive that way)

If you are NOT concealing it, carry a tomahawk. Far more effective than a knife as proven in combat since Veetnam (NAVSPECWAR).

Those composite knives Always make it through the checkpoints using METAL DETECTORS - no longer - you have milimeter-wave XRay and pat-downs... and now you have potential front page news.

You can probably still bring it to court or county library though.

I still say if you're not concealing, you are far better fighting using a tomahawk than a simple blade.

The Lagrana-developed Vietnam fighting tomahawk was very effective and was developed as a fighting weapon, NOT for chopping wood. Effective for sentry removal, close-in combat of all sorts. Using an overhand swing, it could enter down through a pith helmet and finish about jaw level. Effective.

Unless of course, you just admire the art and craft of a well-made knife - nothing wrong with that.

Wow thanks for all the tips and such. I forgot to add we do have blade length rstrictions, around 4'' IIRC. I don't intentioanlly take it to work, just an accident a few times and freaked the guards out. Also I always clipped it to my pocket, so not concealed.

+1 on the Benchmade.

Although...one of these years...I should probably sharpen mine. Great grip, though, and lightweight. Very happy with mine. Another nice feature is the reversible / side-switchable belt clip, so you can keep it on whichever side of your belt you prefer for quicker opening.

Slaughter,

Those axes are bad ass, and damn nice. Big $ though.

I think you would get hassled by "the man" if you had one. Even in full display. In any big/medium city, if the cops see you walking down the street with one, they are going to stop you, run your info, and generally detain and waste your time.

You "can" walk in down town Sacramento, CA with a rife in display. It is "legal". But actually doing it, and being left alone is highly unlikely. I once walked about 150 feet with a rifle in hand to a gun shop in D.T. Sac. The barrel was pointed down, yet people were moving out of my way. One person of different ethnicity took off pronto. Had I kept walking I have no doubt the police would have been called.

However where now I live.... It'd be just fine : ) - Nuttiest thing I ever saw, when I went to court here on a speeding ticket. People were coming to court wearing tool belts, and knives. No detectors. The judge would then tell the person to come right up to the bench. You could reach up and shake hands with the guy.

The fastest draw you can get imho is a pocket catch, also known as a wave feature in some brands. This allows the blade to 'catch' the corner of the pocket upon extraction. As it catches the blade is deployed and then locked fully open by the time it's out of the pocket. You can't get any faster short of a fixed blade.

Another advantage of the catch design is that in a stressful situation you don't have to fumble around looking for a thumb stud or other opening device because it's already open!

The Cold Steel TiLite, I've carried one for years, with AUS8 stainless steel is about the best implementation of this design and for a retail price of around $50 and a blade length of 4" it should suit your needs well. There are aluminum and zytel handle options as well.

The pocket catch also works fine even if you've got gloves on or if you're deploying the knife with your off hand.

Kershaw's whirlwind is another favorite of mine if you don't care for the pocket catch design. Actually most any Kershaw with speed safe will be a good EDC (every day carry).

If you plan on carrying a knife for self defense I highly recommend you carry two for the simple fact that in a stressful situation you may drop one or the assailant may somehow get possession of it, without a second you'd be in trouble.

A friend of mine gave me a Benchmade Griptilian after I helped him do some work on a 1942 willys (very cool vehicle).

I love the thing. Great feel, great blade, opens and closes quickly, fantastic grip.

If you are killing Zombie's, THIS IS THE KNIFE FOR YOU!!

avoid serrated knives.... It could get stuck in the skull of a zombie...
there you would be... trying to pull your blade out of the dead undead while another one has you for a appetizer

Perhaps in Queens . . . but Brooklyn is known as the home of the ball bat which has proven itself to be effective in the collection of personal loans.

Although it's effective in it's stock, unmodified form, it's also favored, by at least one group . . with 16p nails driven through the end.

For subjects in motion the preferred method it to cut the bat at it's thinnest diameter and affix either a trampoline spring or a 10' section of link chain secured to a tennis ball with the nails driven through it.

It really depends on who you are defending yourself against. I know a couple folks who are constantly being attacked by folks who own them money.

My personal favorite.
http://sogknives.com/store/PE18.html

The tip on this one is extremely durable and will pierce though almost anything without breaking.
The locking mechanism is extremely strong and easy to clean.

Note:
If you're going to carry a folder be sure to keep the blade locking mechanism clean.
Pocket lint or other debris can reduce blade lock effectiveness.
