Me like - no need to baby these, I'll bet. I'd go for the 'bobber' - I really dig the fat tire bikes, always have. I almost went for the Ural sidecar a few years back - they were, and still are a bargain for a sidecar bike.
A friend bought the Enfield a couple of years ago - Brand-new 50's tech straight out of India. It has been dependable and is just right for his commuting in town. Not for me, but I do appreciate the classics and it's about as simple to maintain as it gets. Thanks for posting - cool stuff.
I really like that look. If I were getting ready . . as has been said . . to pull the trigger the $10,000 would go to a pristine Bonneville 650 restoration.

I'd go for a sidecar hack just for winter. The only thing about snow that scares me is the falling over part - but with a sidecar, you can do donuts! (don't ask about the time I was...um...experimenting with a DC Metro PD rig in about 2" of fresh powder...)
Can't wait to hear the HD'ers though - "Ural copied the Forty-Eight!!".

I would LOVE one! They are kick ass cool. Love the simplicity. Would make a great bike to have out in tim-buk-to. Love the nobbies. Good to have when the lights start to go out, and you can't power a computer to fix your bike. I can imagine having one park out a cabin in bonnieville.
At the same time KLR's are great for that too, and cheaper. The ural might be "tougher" though.
A little more HP would be nice. Oh, and a machine gun on the hack. Let's really copy the german's. Whata say City?

I like the designs. the side car is part of the Ural appeal though.
I just looked at the Vrod Buell (bar-designs website). And if HD should have let Erik design a cruiser/ touring bike to go head to head with the Goldwing. 2 up, fiberglass bags, good exhaust note, excellent handling, Electric farkles, Sort of like a S3T crossed with a Goldwing.

when Ural first started coming in they had a Classic Solo that was for sale it was 9500.... it couldnt compete with the Sportster for price, HP, or Accessories..... it was dropped. Great fun bike for commuting, not a ride for rolling to Sturgis, but you knew that going in. You can still find them....same technology, deflated price in the 3-4K range.
for military, expeditionary, or humanitarien endeavors, the side hack machine gun mounnt and gun are available And nothing says you need carry a passenger, hello trunk for ammo and supplies.
good stuff, the US importer is in Redmond crazy bunch of Ivans to party with looks like they green lighted the sT ! http://www.imz-ural.com/solo.aspl 6995.....tempting. you can spec order it ala cart.... so no take off parts and upgrades, right from the factory, the way you want.... Blacked out engine with orange gear up camo and with knobbies ! (ok, maybe that is just me)
its what the trunk is for just behind the passengerseat, tool kit ! and yes, get the military field manual along with the 'users guide' from the dealer.
hours of fun If you want to learn new Russian cursewords. get a ural ! One is on my short list of 'needs'
My father-in-law used to say that was part of the "mystique" (my word, not his) of the Harley rider: if you saw a guy on a Harley, you knew he was familiar with that machine inside and out, and an expert at roadside improvising. I'd say the same applies to Ural riders.
Those two are obviously street bikes (nothing wrong with that, just sayin'). I like the way the sT is such a multipurpose machine. Looks a little more rugged and simplistic. Wish we had a dealer a little closer. Place about 1.5 hours away is a "dealer" (notice quotations), but doesn't appear to have any stock. I'd love to test one out.
Ive ridden the first generation 'solo' off road off pavement on a dealer demo days ... it is heavy, but on par with the city X
first gear is appropriately low grunt for tractor pulling and rock crawling, very little clutch play required. Ground clearance for days..... i am going to retire the CITYX from woods duty (I have a zuk 350 that just getting done)..... but the sT is on the list to get.
I still have a midlife crisis to plan, and that look slike the perfect weapon for it.
