This will not be about marriages, at least not directly since there are currently about 102 marriage threads running. This will not be about job transitions or lack of finding employment, even though that is a main background catalyst of the situation. This will simply be about thoughts of selling off one of my bikes again. Considering that I didn't even start the M2 in 2010 (not that I can remember anyway), and that it needs a battery, and that in 2009 it was barely rode (if at all), I am once again thinking of selling it. But the used tube frame Buell market sucks. And parting it out never did add up (I would have wound up with an engine and not enough money from the rest of the parts to make it worth parting out). So I've been thinking of trying to swap it for something like a 3/4-1ton pickup or a medium sized moving van in case I have to roll up my tent (so to speak) and seek a new place to find work. So, with that in mind I begin my quest (probably a lost cause) to try and find a deal that I could live with. I might have to swap off the S2 instead of the M2, or both, but probably neither (which is how things have gone since I'm not willing to sell for eviction/relocation prices like some have done. If it comes to that then I'll find a storage unit for it and hope I'm able to make it back for it later on before the storage fees get past due and it winds up in some auction. Thought about swapping it for a fishing boat (about the only thing harder to sell than an older Buell is a fishing boat) but then that won't do what I need done and simply swaps one thing for a bigger thing. I suppose I could sleep in a boat better than on a bike but that's a discussion best saved for another time and place (or at least a different thread) . All told I think I went through less than four tanks of gas between three bikes in 2010, and the last I rode the S2 the battery or charging system crapped out and I haven't been able to even get to fixing that (whine goes better with wine, and since I don't drink much these days I try to avoid getting whiney) . Life goes on, and so do I (though I do tend to ramble on at times as well) , so I'll wander off to see if I can find any interested parties in a used tube frame Buell. Probably as many of those as there are jobs prospects. Things are going to start happening fast in three to five weeks so I'd better get busy. Browsing the web on a phone is limiting at best so if I don't wander back before this scrolls off then take care. New Year's Resolution: Do what I can to make 2011 better than 2010. | ||

If you can find a trade deal for something you want and can use, I'd say do the trade deal. If you can sell it for a deal you can live with, do that. Otherwise, I would find a Bueller on BW you can trust that wouldn't mind sharing garage space for your bike, keep it on a tender, ride it to keep it from dry rotting, etc. I would be happy to baby sit your bike for you, but I'm too far south for that to make sense. Paying to store it with the risk of it being in an episode of storage unit vultures is worse than giving it away. 2011 will be better. | ||

FWIW, local asking price for a 1999 M2 is about $2700, for an 02: $3000. http://www.ksl.com/index.php?nid=218&ad=13789216&c at=144&lpid=&search=Buell I have a hard time selling my babies, too - partly the attachment and more often because they are worth more that what I can get for them. The purple bike on my profile page is a good example: It's a project bike I built over a period of a few years, appraised at $22K but I probably couldn't get half that - it does not get ridden much and I could use the space in my garage, but..... good luck | ||

The only bike I had a hard time selling was a 1973 Penton six days. I spent at least twice what is cost ($900) converting into a full on motocross bike. Yea, this was just before the Japanese discovered there was a market for 125cc mx bikes, like the CR125. Lesson learned. Anyway, 2 years after completion and one race season, I needed to sell it. I got $495, or so, for it; had to sell it to a kid that liked the look. But didn't have a clue, as to what he was buying. My guess is it lasted a few tanks of gas. Selling that bike for half what it cost new, hardened my outlook on the turning of inventory. That is: a used bike is not what "you" think it's worth, it's worth what someone else is willing to pay for it. | ||

Don't sell your bikes. Every time I did that because of finances, it was a mistake. I once had to go for three years with no bike because of that mistake. It's easy to get all caught up in the technicalities of life and not be able to see the big picture. What did you major in? Do you have any skills? This is America and here we can do and become if we try. I have always found that it's easier to find a job if you already have a job. ANY job. Much harder when you are down and out. Mow lawns, roof a house, shovel snow for someone, painting, the list goes on. The trick is to have faith in yourself, work hard and persevere. You can't help but succeed. | ||

Thanks for the thoughts. We've got a 3 year old in the family (step daughter's daughter) just diagnosed with cancer so that makes everything else small by comparison. Currently there is an S2 for $3000 and an M2 for $3500 on the local craigslist so I'll be watching those to see if they scroll off unsold or get reposted. I don't really want to sell the S2 and am going to try and hang onto it. I also want to keep the tank off the M2 so I'll have to get a spare tank I have painted. I'm also debating on putting the breadbox back onto it along with the original shifter arm assembly since none of that will really help the price much. Reducati, I replied to your comcast address and included a link to the red S2 up here, better condition than mine and less than I'd comfortably part with mine for. Plus that one is red which by your user name might appeal to you. Or not. I've posted before about my job situation directly and also in replies to other threads so I won't get into all that except to say that I keep trying, I'm looking diagonally as well, got training on my own dime in another CAD program to add that to my resume, subscribed to a couple of LinkedIn groups for an alternate career direction, and I'll probably upgrade my driver's license after the first of the year to a commercial grade as another option. In the mean time I'll be digging around the garage and basement to find stuff to sell, and I'll probably sell off a couple of bicycles which will hopefully net me closer to getting out what I have into them than either of the Buells would. Stopping to see the indirect grandkid on the way home tonight to see how she's doing then heading home to post a bicycle for sale. Thanks again for the thoughts. | ||
