I set the helmet on the right mirror while I got all zipped up and let the bike warmup. The instant I noticed it missing I hear the crash on the ground. One EXO-1000 down. Luckily I still have a EXO-900.

They say that a helmet that fell more than 30 inches, just once, is finished... Its not the outer layer that you would sand and repaint that is the problem, its the stuffing inside that you cant see that is in the real damage. I wouldn't wear it... but maybe my head is worth more to me than yours is to you... |

If it's just surface damage, you should be fine. If the shell has been damaged (cracked, broken, etc.), then I'd replace. Just dropping a helmet, contrary to popular myth, doesn't destroy a helmet. There must be mass to compact the interior padding. I'm looking at the pictures on a Blackberry, but it appears that the shell is buggered requireing replacement. |

shell cracking isnt the only worry, the shell can flex then pop back crushing the EPS liner under it leaving a gap, if you impact that portion of your head there will be no real protection there because the EPS needs to press on the shell do distribute the force. there is little to no way to tell for sure if you have compressed the EPS under the shell, I personally would replace it but that's just me. Even a $600 lid isn't worth risking it over. Granted many of the premium companies (once you start spending big bucks on a lid that is) will (or did at one time) X-ray them for you to see if they are still serviceable |

thanks for the idea court, I am going to try and make a lamp out of my crashed lid that saved my life!! I have been trying to think of clever things I could do to display that lid, a lamp is perfect. |

X, If you decide to trash it, let me know. If it fits, I'd wear it. It's still better than nothing. My helmet had rub marks near the bottom where the tire hit it. I left it in the helmet lock, being foolish. I puttied the gap and painted it. Dumb, probably, but I still think it's better than nothing. If nothing else it still protects against the cold, insects, flying debris, etc. |

From the Snell website: I dropped my helmet! Do I have to go buy a new one? Generally the answer is probably not. Helmets are one use items, but are quite durable otherwise, at least the ones we certify. Frequent dropping or spiking a helmet on the ground, or other hard surfaces may eventually degrade the helmet's performance. Similarly if the helmet falls to the ground at highway speeds unoccupied the owner must be aware that some degradation may have occurred. In general the real damage comes when the helmet contacts an object with a head inside. The Foundation recommends that if you are participating in an activity that requires that you wear a helmet, that you avoid hitting stuff with your head. It can be difficult to readily determine if a helmet has been damaged, and the protective capabilities compromised without a thorough inspection by a trained professional. Some manufacturers may provide this service or direct you to these others that can perform these inspections. The Foundation recommends that if you suspect your helmet may be compromised, then replace it. If the helmet has been involved in an impact while in use, replace it. |

If you drop your helmet from the bike then most likely it is okay yeah go to SNELL http://www.smf.org/ I sent them a Shoei 1000 RF in from a crash on a race track from 2008 I filled the forms out and sent the helmet in and contacted SNELL by E-mail that is was coming and actually chatted with Dr Ed Becker from SNELL. They sent the helmet back and commended me for the choice of helmet, it came back whole, and said I could still use it for street use! The helmet was gorged on the backside of it! Tire transfer marks on the front shield. I use it in class sometimes |

Thanks for all the info. After scraping the chipped paint off,... it seems to be ok. I cannot see any cracks.I would just need to either sand and paint...(and Auto-spraycan from Autoparts store??) or cover it with a sticker or something. Since I have a backup helmet, I will let it sit till spring. |

Frequent dropping or spiking a helmet on the ground, or other hard surfaces may eventually degrade the helmet's performance. If you can slam it on the floor and it's "probably" still okay per SNELL, I'd say you're just fine! ~SM |

I played football for 13 years and had the same helmet for an average of 4 years a piece. I know that the impacts each had were severe, and yet they were never replaced after each hard hit. Why cant motorcycle helmet technology be the same I wonder? |

Football helmets, like many others are designed for repeated impacts. They are lined with a resilient foam. It goes back to shape after absorbing the impact. Motorcycle & bicycle helmets use a compressible, not resilient foam, and are one use items. They are designed for much higher impacts and the foam is sacrificial, meaning it gives it's life for you. If the shell is ok, and your head wasn't in it, the helmet is fine. I did break a helmet by dropping it once. I was at K-mart back in the 1970's and saw a lid that was an Easy Rider flag paint job, but the package & helmet had no indication of where it was made, or of what. The seam down the middle told me it was plastic, but what? Polycarbonate? Recycled milk jugs? I asked the saleguy, and after 30 seconds of BS about how good it was, I held the lid at shoulder height, and dropped it on it's top. Cracked right down the seam. The salesguy was indignant and told me I had to pay for it. I told him to get the manager, to put that in writing so I could then sue them for trying to sell a non-DOT rated helmet in NY. He backed down fast, THEN I made him get the manager, explained that there had been a terrible mistake, that if he got all the bad helmets off the shelf there would be no need to get the police involved, ( he was ready to call them on me ) or for fines & criminal prosecution for violating the whole slew of laws broken by his store. Also he should call corporate HQ and have them pull them off all the shelves. And. That I would be going to other K-marts to check. Took 3 stores and 6 threats of police intervention ( first from them, then from me ) to get them off the area shelves. Illegal chinese crap. Your lids fine. |

Hmm, Court...that's one heck of an idea. I see a new helmet lamp in my future...since that helmet was kind enough to GIVE me a future! Now to decide...shall I use it as a lamp base? Or light it up jack-o-lantern style? |

Why not both? Use led's to save power & keep it cooler. Look for post Christmas sales on led Xmas lights! You can use a whole string in the helmet. Lightly tint a clear visor with markers? Anything from happy face to demonic. |

Arai rep said himself that if you drop your helmet unless your heads in then your good. basically it needs something on the inside to reinforce it to cause damage when hitting the ground otherwise the force of impact is dispured through the helmet with no problems. |
