While I was home for thanksgiving holidays my 27" Imac was stolen (along with other things) from my house, So my question is if I have the serial number is there away of maybe tracking it down or something if some one tries to use it? I am going to call all of the pawn shops in town and see if they have recived it and I filed a police report but just wondering if there is any other steps I could take. |

I'd check on craigs list and eBay too. If there's an apple store in your area I'd give them the serial number to keep a look out. |

Did you have LoJack for laptops installed on it? if so... you can get it back... unless they are very very good and know what they are doing. Either way, that sucks. Any ideas on who might have taken it? |

good idea on the apple store though I think the nearest one is in Austin but still worth a try. I have been looking on ebay and Craigs list and will keep looking. |

no clue though I think it may be some one who lives in my Appartment complex as I live in a gated complex. I wish I had that lojack stuff on it and I will have it on my next computer now that this has happened. |

Another thing you can try if you know someone with access to infostructures is to have them sweep networks for your MAC address... that is, if you had it written down anywhere and they haven't swapped the NIC or WIFI adapter out. Most laptops come with those devices integrated on the MB anyways. I used to work at an ISP back in the day and we could locate customers or machines based on the IP or MAC address. It won't give you a super accurate description in most cases, but you can narrow things down and try to locate it yourself. If you are still active duty, get with your SIGO or post NEC and see if they have any suggestions. Send me an email if no one can help and I'll see what I can do on this end. |

If you gave the police the serial number when you filed your report, they will enter the laptop into NCIC. This is a national data base and if anyone enters that serial number, it will show up stolen and will reflect the reporting department. Good luck. Mean people suck! |

that must be what the pawn shop was talking about when I called them and they told me that it has to be in the police system and they will contact them and not talk to me... |

Mac address won't show up if they are behind a router, and only the most direct upstream ISP will likely see it. Your broadband provider can probably pull what yours was from log files, and could scan to see if it reappeared, but it's a headache for them and had legal implications so they probably won't do it for you. On the IPhone now, they have an add on thingy in ITunes that allows you to track a lost phone. Not sure if it works in reverse for the mac, it might, but you probably had to have it already turned on. If you use google mail and they are using the machine to get into your account, gmail will keep a "recent IP addresses accessing" list you can get to. Apple should be able to log your serial number as stolen so if they ever send the machine in for repair, you can be notified, but that is more work for them and more headaches, so who knows if they do it or not. |

Sorry to hear about your loss. I hope you have your property returned to you! |

Mobile Me was what I was thinking about. And if you updated to IPhone 4.2, there is now a free apple app to find a lost IPhone. It can be disabled by a thief, but it's better then nothing. Dont know if it works in reverse, and I think you needed to install it before bad things happened. |

For a very long time Apple has put a backdoor into all the hardware. If you call them they can make the computer report back the next time it hits the web. They can give you stills from the camera and report the IP of the connection. I would suggest having the police report in hand when you call and they will need the serial number and or MAC addresses of the ethernet adapters. Courts iPhone app is even more advanced since they have GPS built into the phones. |
