I was clocked at 57 in a 45 in a local speed trap and a little courtesy and respect got me a handshake, a thank-you and the next one would be on me

Good for you, I wish I had your luck. I've only ever been given a warning once and am always polite and respectful.

The one and only time I ever got a warning I was doing 60 in a 45. It was after work and I was on my way to the blood bank to donate. I was completely honest when he asked me if I knew why I had been pulled over and then how fast I was going. I told him that I wasn't really paying attention to my speed..... until I saw him and then looked at my speed and saw the 60mph. He smiled, looked at the baby seat in the back seat and said I know you cant afford this ticket and since you were "straight with me" I'll give you a warning. I wish I knew what mojo whammy I put on him so I could bottle it.

Last ticket I got, about 10 years ago, was for 5 over the limit (for those that know FL it was in Chiefland). When I got pulled over I honestly had no idea why he pulled me. He told me he clocked me a few miles back going 5 miles over the limit while passing (someone that was driving 5 or 10 under the limit). I was floored to get a ticket for 5 over while passing (in a passing zone). I couldn't help but laugh at him right in his face. He got mad and the madder he got the more I laughed. iirc it cost me about $150, but I still get a chuckle when I think back on it.

"Car & Driver" or one of the other auto mags had an article on getting out of tickets a few years ago, and I remember that was one of the things they said about what to say when the cop asks you "Do you know how fast you were going?".

Bad responses included "80 MPH- you caught me" and "Oh, I'm sure I wasn't going over the speed limit". They said you were much more likely to be let off by saying you didn't know, hopefully due to some understandable distraction.

Call the chief and put in a good word for that officer, it goes a long way in keeping his attitude.

That being said, I was clocked @ 83 in a 55. Pulled completley off the road, turned my bike off and held the key out so he could see it. Told him I didn't realize how fast I was going till I seen his lights. He asked me where I
was from and I told him I was out on about 6 hour ride before it got too cold here in the mountains. He checked my license and registration, came back and told me
I'm not giving you a ticket, just a warning.
Well thank you Officer I appreciate that.
You know I can tell the more responsible riders by the way they dress and act, your dressed properly, gloves, jacket, pants, boots. If you were wearing a tshirt I'd be hauling you in. Nice bike by the way, what is it( I was on my Z1000)?

Talked for a few seconds then he shook my hand and told me to have a great ride!

Yea, made the rest of my ride that much more enjoyable!

On a side note, that Charger sure sounded awesome as he pulled out into traffic and put his foot through the floor to catch someone else!!!

+1 It is nice (and seldom) to get a pat on the back rather then a slap on the back of the head by the public or the supervisors.

worked for the dealer for 7 years, I would get pulled over, once a month, every month, with out fail. Only one ticket (which I had removed thanks to GPS ; ))

Polite, compliance, with no sudden moves will always get you more credo than any thing else smart you are thinking about saying.

Plus it didnt hurt that every local agency that was on Hogs, were riding bikes I had sold them.

Nice, I envy you my last runin was with a cop who had his gun out and on me before i even turned around. Nothing like staring wide-eyed at an overweight pig's gun barrel @ 6 in the morning. Well at least he didn't give me a ticket. Most likely due to pulling a gun on a 10 over ticket with other people around.

FYI I do respect officers. Most are good people with good morals and live life as under paid workers with plenty of integrity.

However the POS that pulled a gun on me or the few power hungry pricks I've encountered should lose their jobs. Problem is that the blue curtain protects them unless the press gets wind of it.

I also second that you should contact the chief with a compliment. I did the same earlier this year when i was ticketed (later dismissed) due to a state error. I went in despite the ticket and having my plates pulled and complimented the female officer for her professional attitude and pleasant demeanor I hope it helped her on her review as we could use more cops like her.

I dont want to run this OT (probably better to discuss more in another thread) but I had to say something here. Cops and firefights make very good money, not underpaid for sure. Cops here in Tallahassee get ~75% pay for the rest of their life (with full health ins) with 30 years...regardless of how old when the hit 30 years service. So a cop (say 60k avg salary at retirement) that started in their early 20's gets about 45k starting in their early 50's. Public safety pensions are going to bankrupt local and state governments.

OK, gotta share...

Just got off the phone with my local police dept.- I happen to live on a neighborhood road that connects 2 major traffic arteries that run out into the various neighborhoods and eventually into the country.

Idiots probably top 50-60MPH in front of my house, through the neighborhood, daily.

Got to talk with a very cool and informative officer, a motor cop incidentally, who empathized with me and gave me the # of his head cheese for this problem- long story short, if I do what I can do and communicate the situation with the proper folks, maybe I can effect a solution to ignorant idiot speeders in my neighborhood.

I have a newly built neighborhood park next door to my property, had a hand in its creation- I'd hate to see someone's kid killed due to shz!tty driving.

I really appreciate LEO's who do their job this well, and with an appreciation of WTF is going on.
