The Los Angeles International Auto show kicks off the show circuit here in the US and I went to the sneak preview last night. The benefit of paying the higher price of admission was access to that a lot of the cars normally off limits. I got to sit in every type of Aston Martin, an Audi R8 V10 roadster and others (rather disappointed in the Nissan GT-R). The wife sat in various Rolls Royce, including the $450K drophead coupe. I can see where they spent the money. The leather was so perfect it’s hard to believe it used to be some animal’s skin. I hoped to see the new Mercedes E-class convertible and they indeed had an E550. Expensive but not overly so for what you get in style, performance and craftsmanship. Absolutely the car I would get if I were looking to drop 80 large. Ford had by far the largest display and I spent a good amount of time there. The new Boss 302 is cool with a 5.0 liter pumping out 444 horsepower! The Raptor truck was impressive and I’d love to have one but expect the fuel bill would bankrupt me. I wish I had an excuse to buy a 7 passenger car because the Flex is one cool ride. You could tell that Ford’s on a roll by the quality of the display. GM on the other hand was a disappointment. They had a fair amount of floor space but the content was way down. Chevy was touting its Camaro convertible but nobody seemed interested. Mazda had a sweet “Shinari” concept car but the Infiniti concept blew the doors off every car there. It had the most amazing paint I’ve ever seen. Walked through a few other displays (skipped Honda and Toyota as I’m not a big fan and they were touting boring "green" cars anyway). I settled on a Jeep Wrangler Unlimited for my next car as it will satisfy my desire for a convertible and the need to see what lays at the end of every dirt road with the bonus of being able to take the wife and dogs along too. I didn't have time to see it all but it was a fun night. My favorite model was in the Range Rover exhibit. Not the raciest one out there but she had classic lines and you could tell she’d hold up good over the long haul (OK I’m talking spokes-models here, as in some fine looking females, and there were a bunch). From here the shows go to Detroit, Nueva York and Chicago (maybe more). This is a good year to go out and admire the sheetmetal. Heading to the motorcycle show in San Mateo tomorrow. Time to go buy some lottery tickets. |
