Tom, I was speaking to the "competence" issue... Rollie Free and the racers of yesteryear showed incredible competence- yes, the accidents in board track racing led to their banishment, but I submit that these folks showed extremely high competence. As a native Tennessean I've always worn a helmet- feel naked without one. However, I feel "competent" enough to ride sans helmet if I was out west somewhere, away from town/traffic/most hazards with the open road in front of me. I'd need eye protection and a good windscreen- rocks and junebugs are everywhere- but occasionally I'd choose to ride "skin to the wind". |

ok I have a question... Why do the people who don't wear helmets instead wear those gay looking rags on their heads? |

Redbuelljunkie - Still waiting for the reasonable argument explaining why motorcyclists should be allowed to ignore the first, most basic rule of safe motorcycle operation. It's not a rule... It may be a fact, it may be the right thing to do, it may be what is required in some states... But in my state it is not a rule. Next year when I take a multi state ride through helmet states I will wear one. Same way I would ask someone to take their shoes off if they come into my house. That's my rule, however in other homes that may not be the rule so it is a choice. I think you need to be careful of the terminology you are using, because it is incorrect. |

Paint_shaker - "I don't give 2 hoots if someone chooses to ride with out a helmet SO long as it doesn't cost me money." If your CHOICE affects MY wallet, I'll have a say in it... I choose not to involuntarily give money to keep someone on life support or for advanced rehab. Your arguement is not with me,it is with the lawmakers, so posting it here won't change the documented and accepted laws of the great state of Wisconsin. And if that day one day comes i will have to make the choice of wearing a helmet or not riding. However at this time, I am just fine with the way things are... |

squids. I just thought those were not the best examples of helmet usage. Those guys had their place in their day. Much like NASCAR drivers do today.Things were different in those days. Traffic wasn't as heavy, people dind't think it was their god given right to drive and be damned everyone else. Cell phones, much less regular telephones weren't in the hands of most average americans. Also like my father and other elders like to remind me. people were just more polite, a little more respectful of the other person than today. I believe that also. |

I decided to try it at homecoming this year, I didn't make it out of the parking lot without my lid, it just felt way to weird. I have been riding motorcycles for years but I was afraid to even pull my feet up and put them on the pegs, despite knowing that I can control the bike more with my feet up. I was nearly paralyzed at the controls. so after about 10 yards I parked it and went back to my room and got my lid. (the same lid that saved my life a few months later. the impact on the lid is clear enough it saved a s*** ton of damage to my noggin)

now that is a good question I thought the idea was wind in the hair but??? forget helmet laws we need to ban do rags!

Wow this is still going eh? Put simply the removal of free choice (when said choice does not infringe upon the rights of others) and insertion of a government mandate pushed by a private corporations agenda is unethical at best and possibly unconstitutional. The federal government exists to serve the citizens, not babysit... |
