Thank you, Mark, for sharing your memories of your Grandfather. They are inspiring and uplifting. My Grandfather also served in the Pacific. He passed years ago, but I recall the stories of encounters with Japanese subs and zeros and his cruiser being in the first line of carrier fleet defense. |

Sorry for your loss...sounds like your grandfather was much like my dad...from C.C.C. straight to the South Pacific and he lived an honorable life to his dying day. A great man by all measures that matter. |

Great memories, thanks for sharing. This morning I was at breakfast in a hotel in Escanaba. At another table were two young children, maybe 3 years old and 18 months. As mom was busy fixing the kids up their food, an Army National Guard soldier walked by the window that the children were sitting at. The older one yelled with glee "There's Daddy!" I asked the mom if he was going active duty and she said yes that he was going to Afganistan, and that the unit was shipping out this morning. When he came in I thanked him for what he was going to do. There is another Great Generation preparing to take their place in history. There always have been, there always will be. Some will participate and others will appreciate. Thank you to all the veterans and active duty military. |

Well... I just got home from the funeral... I know funerals can't be "good"... but as far as funerals go, this one was. My father got up and spoke and told stories about my Grandfather and their lives growing up... We all laughed, we all shed a few tears. Thanks again for all the kind words and I'm looking forward to the next time we are all around a campfire. I may feel the need to tell y'all some Grandpa stories... Thanks again, Gainer |
