It's a freakin oil thread.I dislike Amsoil is all.Garbage as far as i'm concerned.I'll stick with the industry standards.

I used to feel the same way.

Amsoil is good, but what annoyed me was how some of the salesmen would talk about it as if it was holy water.

It's good oil, but it's still just oil. It won't get you laid or give you the winning lottery numbers.

My WHOLE point exactly! Various oils like Mobil-1/Klotz/Spectro SYNTHETIC oils will ALL perform nearly the same and NOBODY could possibly MEASURE a difference.
Now if any of you are Petrochemical engineers i'd like to hear your thoughts on the groups of synthetics I,II,and III

Ducxl,

Your whole point was you have a personal issue with Amsoil, you think it's garbage, and you don't understand their business model.

Boltrider,

You are correct, Amsoil is good oil- and so are all the other oils currently available. I learned a while back that there aren't any bad oils out there, but there are oils that are better than others. From my personal experience with laboratory oil analysis, Amsoil has been the best oil I have found yet. Which brings me back to...

Ducxl,

There is a very easy and affordable way to scientifically measure, quantify, and compare the performance of any oil you put in any vehicle. Here are just a few of the companies that perform oil analysis:

http://www.blackstone-labs.com/

http://www.oillab.com/oiltesting.aspx

http://www.polarislabs1.com/

http://www.testoil.com/

http://www.bentlytribology.com/

...and the list goes on. Any of these laboratories will tell you exactly how your oil is performing, and that allows you to measure the difference in performance between oils. You don't have to believe anything someone tells you- have your oil analyzed and find out for yourself. I did, and so have several other people on this forum... along with thousands of other enthusiasts interested in using the best oil for their vehicles/applications.

BTW, you should ask a petrochemical engineer's thoughts on Group IV and Group V synthetic bases, because Groups I, II, and III are mineral basestocks- not synthetic.

To follow up on what Redbuelljunkie said above, a great forum for learning more about oil is http://www.bobistheoilguy.com

They have an excellent forum, and you can find examples of the oil analyses above for just about any oil (motorcycle or otherwise) you can think of. Spend some time digging around the site and you can learn a lot.

Ourdee, I use 15-40 diesel oil in my bike in late fall/early spring. Change every 2k miles. I do not ride my bike when the salt gets laid down though.
Scheez, I need a POS bike to thrash in the winter months!

Ourdee,

Your owners manual should have a temperature/viscosity chart that tells you the approved oil weights for your bike. The most common cold weather oil grade for motorcycles is 10W-40. As long as you meet the type, class, and grade of oil required by your bike's manufacturer, you can use any brand you want. It's actually illegal for a manufacturer to require you to use a specific brand of oil, so don't fall for HD's BS about having to use HD-branded oil. There are too many better oils at lower prices you can choose instead of wasting money on the HD stuff.

I use a different oil in neart every oil change on my S-10. 10w40 summer,5w30 Winter. Castrol,Valvoline,Quaker State, Motocraft,Penzoil,Havoline and the like. I figure what one oil lacks in additive, the next one will get it.200K and it's with in an eight on an inch of full when I change it and that's the only time I check the oil in it.
28 lifetime highway vehicles and never lost an engine or had an oil burner. Did lose 2, two strokes. Seized a race bike and melted a 30 year old chain saw on a hard run........

The only one I have ever blown up is a Buick 231 V6. Snapped the crank right behind the front two cylinders. I'll never forget the sound coming out of that motor.

I need a light enduro for winter.

Aint that the truth! with some 17 inch street hoops for spring.........
