21" seat height, it's kinda cool. No way I'm riding that without a cup though. |

What are those Dan Gurney sit in bikes called? They must have more protection for the rider. |

Okay, I asked Google for images of "alligator bike", and this is what I got. EDIT: can anyone else see the linked pic? Several of my posts have started giving me the broken pic icon... it'll be there until I refresh, then it disappears. Wondering if that's happening to others as well...? ~SM (Message edited by Swordsman on October 26, 2010) |

No way I'm riding that without a cup though. I don't think even a cup is going to help when something goes awry.... |

I would hate to be wrapped up in that during a wreck. Looks like a safety hazard. Go around a sharp corner and loose an asscheek. Lowrider? LOOKS cool, but............... (Message edited by gunut75 on October 26, 2010) |

Gurney approached the motorcycle with a race car attitude. The low cg makes it handle fairly well for a bike with a long wheelbase, cuts air resistance and makes it all work pretty good. I've ridden recumbent bicycles, they are fast and easy on the butt. The downside is that as a human powered vehicle the fact that you can't use your mass to push down the pedals means you are limited to pure muscle and can't get the stand up & mash power you see cyclists use on hills and for sprints. The compromise is to have lower low gears and slow up hill speeds. The big pluses are a comfy saddle with no need to emulate butt floss to leave room for leg movement, ( the main cause of pain on a bike ) and low wind drag so high cruise speeds are possible. Add a fairing and you can really haul. The Magnacycle looks structurally weak, or heavier than I want, and the seat isn't low enough to really make it more than a honking big scooter. As a honking big scooter, I've seen worse. |
