I know....but save the flames, OK? Friend's 03 Heritage (88B motor) isn't charging. I'm going to run stator tests like I do on the Buells...but does anyone have a book so I know which pins to jump together to measure output? Also, any guess if the primary locking tool for a Buell will work on a twincam, in case it needs a stator? And a stator nut torque spec? I know, lots of questions...lol. TIA! |

I'm pretty sure the primary on a big twin is longer than a sportster. I would guess the locking bar wouldn't work. |

You can always put it in gear and have your friend apply the rear brake hard. Probably be best in 5th gear. |

Locking bar or a soft wedge will do fine as long as you REMOVE the primary chain tensioner first. Torque spec. is 165-175 on the compensator nut. |

Friend's 03 Heritage (88B motor) isn't charging. Have him call HD customer support and see if they will send him a charging harness upgrade |

Turns out it was the VR that went south. Disassembled, tested, got the part, installed, and was riding within 2 hours |

To check a stator on anything is really simple, and you don't need to know the factory specs! Since most (if not all) failures occur as a result of a open, short or ground problem. Unplug the stator and check resistance between the individual wires, the value should be close to the same for all (+o-5%) now check each wire for resistance to ground,it should be infinite. When you have a bad one, there is no-doubt as the short or open will be very obvious! |

they tend to burn up more than anything, the first thing i do is (if the bike will start) is let it run for a few min. then i open an inspection cover and look for smoke and take a sniff....oh you will know if is fried! |

The problem with electrical stuff is when the smoke escapes. |

Yeah, the blue smoke is the conductor. Let the blue smoke out and circuits don't work anymore |
