First, Gingrich and co. tried this back in the 90's, didn't take.
LEAVING ASIDE THE POLITICAL (yes, is CAN be done), NPR, PBS, and the CPB do some absolutely great work.
How depressing to think of a media environment without them.
Just because the Juan Williams fracas has become a "flavor of the moment" in the left vs. right eternal argument, we should not underestimate the good that public broadcasting has done over the years.
NPR has made liberal hypocrisy a policy. Of course they need to be defunded, just as ACORN had to be defunded. When you take public funds you have a responsibility to uphold certain standards. Juan was outrageously singled out for having the gall to actually have honest discussion.
**NPR internal memo on Juan Williams firing after the jump According to NPR President and CEO, Vivian Schiller, they didn’t just take a shot at Juan Williams as a proxy for Fox News for Soros’ million. During pledge drive week, they want progressives to know, we’re looking out for you by using taxpayer funding to fight the battles you want us to.
My comments about my feelings supposedly crossed some line. But let me tell you what you can say on National Public Radio without losing your job. Nina Totenberg wished that Senator Jesse Helms and his grandchildren would get AIDS and she's still working there. A so-called 'humorist' on NPR said the world would be a better place if 4-million Christians evaporated. Hilarious! And calling millions of members of the tea party movement a sexual pejorative - 'teabaggers' - won't get you in hot water either. So it seems some opinions are more equal than others at NPR. I used to think the left-wing was the home of tolerance, open-mindedness, and respect for all viewpoints, but now I've learned the truth the hard way.
I used to think the left-wing was the home of tolerance, open-mindedness, and respect for all viewpoints, but now I've learned the truth the hard way. WOW! It's a cold harsh reality when you finally face liberalism. Good for Juan for finally seeing this. I just don't understand how so many are still blind to this. Liberals have been trying to shut down debate for decades.
FOX News? Where else do you see in the mainstream media where a liberal and a conservative can go head to head with their opinions on a given topic? If anything FOX should get public funding for making this happen.
Only 2% of there funding is from the gov. I think they will be just fine.
That's what they get directly, but it goes much deeper. They get money from the local NPR stations that get local government funding. The amount isn't really the issue though. When you take the first government dollar you are supposed to be non-partisan. They haven't been nonpartisan for decades though. This is just a symptom of their emboldened liberalism.
No doubt they will do just fine without public funds though. George Soros has deep pockets, and can purchase plenty of "journalists" that will be willing to tow the liberal agenda.
Juan Williams may be gone from National Public Radio's line-up of commentators, but billionaire liberal icon George Soros has donated $1.8 million to hire 100 new reporters for 50 of its member stations.
The money will go to launch a project called Impact of Government, which Soros' Open Society Foundation says will "bring greater transparency and accountability to the workings of state capitals across the country."
If you are true to yourself, even if it is in the dead of night and no one is watching, then you have to admit that your philosophy is a dead end. Your world view is wrong and you must change. Just look at the overwhelming evidence of the intolerance of this philosophy and the subjugation of the individual to mediocrity and absence of accountability. Read your history. Socialism and Communism are dead ends. Always.
I did. I admit I was once a Liberal and it was a painful process to admit I was wrong. The path to prosperity and restoring greatness to America can only be achieved through Conservatism.
NPR must stand on its own. It is inappropriate for this Wonderful Government to use tax dollars to support a Völkischer Beobachter or a Pravda. I listen to NPR and happen to like NPR. But in the end, it is a Pravda with a smiley face. It is way past time for NPR to stand on its own. Let George Soros launch it into a private company. I have no problem with that.
I find it incredibly telling that the daily programming on NPR is overtly liberal and yet they sack one of there own (and are seeking the sacking of another) simply for appearing on Fox.
This had nothing to do with Juan William's viewpoint. It has everything to do with the fact that he strayed off the liberal plantation.
Oddly enough, it's conservatives who disagree with Williams' political viewpoint that are his staunchest defenders.
If NPR understood why the housing market crashed..... why are the monkeys that are supporting NPR back to the same tricks?
NOTHING in the new credit consumer protection bill stops the trends that led to the crash. IE DENYING credit to potential borrowers that dont pass the due diligence and were granted exception due to EEOC/Fair Credit profiling community development issues. Home ownership isnt for everybody..... try and make it so, and you will have the fiasco that happened. Its the same for cars/big screen tvs/ etc; if you dont have the cash, dont have the credit, dont have the job.... why should we say that its ok because of some community group to loan you money?
The housing crisis aint over, the stall on forclosures, will impact the bloated inventory and drive down values of actual retail houses on the market as well. PS pay attention to what they are doing with the 'government insured' reverse mortgages. Your parents are being bilked out of their house, and their estate will be sacked by the bank at first run when they pass. Why bother with the death tax, when the corp can seize the asset at fractional ownership rates?
Read the bill. its only 2600 pages. I am about a quarter of the way through it, it is ugly, anti market, ass covering, non financial freedom, market hating legislation. Another Taxation without Representation BECAUSE THEY DIDNT READ IT EITHER.
(previously licensed for stocks 6&63 with a BA in economics, and it is still a heavy read; think your legislator 'understands' the tome ?... not a hedge I would put)
Look at the attacks that happen when a woman, a black person, or a member of any minority stands up and espouses Conservative ideas. They are branded as traitors or Uncle Toms, or apples, or oreos, or dimwitted.
The so-called feminists rally around their hypocritical allies. Look at NOW's response to Jerry Brown (or someone from Brown's camp) calling Meg Whitman a 'ho. Instead of denouncing this misogynistic behavior, NOW defended Brown by calling it a "teachable moment".
Juan William worked at NPR for ten distinguished years. NPR didn't have the decency to even phone him when he was fired and then the CEO of NPR went on television saying that Juan needed to see his psychiatrist. That is shameful behavior but expected from the intolerant Liberal mindset. Heck, if you are a Liberal, you are next if you step out of line. You've been warned by your master, George Soros.
If they were paying attention, they would have gotten out of the housing market in 2006 when the 6month put on Tyvek dropped below the seasonal downturn number. There was no clearer indicator that the shiate was coming to a halt. The call orders for Tyvek were HALF of what they were the year before; the builders knew, or suspected. I dumped Dupont in the spring of 2007 when the demand came back up for the upcoming season, but the 6th month call was still at winter levels, the market was not being responsive to seasonal demand; your first indication that something aint right. I dumped Georgia Pacific at the same time.
One of the best moves I made. (well that and Roush for the H1N1 hysteria that lil 'pandemic' paid well)
NPR does do good things but they need to be self sufficient. Let George Soros take NPR private. Like him or not, Rupert Murdoch built the most watched (and best ) news organization from scratch using private capital.
I really was floored by Juan saying "I used to think the left-wing was the home of tolerance, open-mindedness, and respect for all viewpoints, but now I've learned the truth the hard way.". I wonder if this really is an epiphany for him that will change his world view. This has happened to a number of now evil conservatives that make great commentators. Folks like Dick Morris, and Michale Medved come to mind. I made it a point to watch O'Reilly last night feeling sure that Juan would be on. It was a great surprise to see him guest hosting in Bill's absence. I think liberals may have made the wrong enemy.
