I'm wondering what everyones thoughts are on the klx250sf, the motard. I've been looking for a commuter bike in the form of a dual sport or motard and found one of these near by for $3800 new. |

if you weigh less than 250 you should be fine. It will push and pull my chunky butt up the dirty roads. I did enjoy the one I borrowed.... washing it not so much ps dont plan on going stump humping with the 17's for the sumo, get the actual dual sport verson |

I've got a 2007 KLX-250 (dirt version) and it's a nice bike for plunking around town and on the trails. It's certainly not a moto-x bike and it won't amaze you with it's power. If you plan on any hi-way use, go up to a DRZ-400 or something similar. Otherwise it's a nice bike. I weigh 220lbs and the rear shock is marginal on the KLX. |

I had a KLR-250. It was fun for a season, but I don't miss it. The bike you are describing sounds like too much money for not enough bike (IMHO). Less money would be fine for that much bike and it would be fun. Or more bike for that much money would be fine and it would be fun. But that kind of coin these days can get an SV-650, and XB9S, an XR-650, etc... any number of way cooler bikes. It isn't enough dirt bike to be a good dirt bike. And it isn't enough street bike to be a good street bike. That motor will get you up to 65 or 70 mph, but will take a while, and will beat itself to death to stay there. Ask the people that saw me trailing smoke and oil after trying to cross the Cherohola skyway. So again, it would be fun bike, but I think it's a $1500 fun bike. Not a $4000 fun bike. A $4000 fun bike is an older street plated KTM enduro. |

That's a good point. Didn't really think of it that way. |

I’ve got an 07 klx 250 too. I like it a lot for single track woods riding. The suspension seems really nice for woods, too soft for any type of jumps. First things first the catalytic converter has to go.. They run much stronger with an fmf exhaust and rejetting. They also can be hard to start cold on factory jets. They would be too slow to be a fun motard. The engines are odd in that mine pulls up to over 80, maybe 85 mph pretty easy for it’s size, and the bike does pull pretty good up hills, but if you try to do a hole shot it don’t feel very fast..Overall to me the engine feels weak on the road but it handles so well on the trails, with no bad habits, that I often get it going faster then it seems like it can go. Thanks for all your info. I weigh about 195 and will be riding about 95 % road, very little highway, mainly the backroads around the house. Also a local dealer has a new 08 kx450f with the street legal kit for $5000, what would be required to get it legal for the road as far as license, tags, insurance ect. I'm sure there would be all kinds of paperwork. |

Ohio isn't bad, Kentucky is probably even easier. In Ohio, you fill out some special forms, and you get the plate. If a trooper then pulls you over later, they can choose to roll down the list and cite you for any and every part of the bike that isn't street legal... horn, signals, DOT tires, etc. If they aren't legal, you get the ticket. Not a terrible approach... just don't get on the wrong side of a cop if you have a bike you didn't work hard to make street legal... it could get very expensive very quickly. Don't know the rules in Kentucky though... |
