I would like to get a new GPS and was looking at the Zumo 550 as it seems to be very popular. I used one and liked it. I also noticed the Zumo 220 which also seems nice. Does anyone have any experience with it? I remember seeing a GPS that had some type of weather radar on it. I thought that was pretty slick but I have had trouble finding that thread. Can anyone help with the make and model of those? TIA Frank |

hey frank, if your a member of ama, you can get a discount on the zumo. i'm still using my tomtom and put it in a sandwich bag if it rains. can't justify the price of the zumo right now and if nothing else, i'll just get a waterproof case from "RAM" |

Thanks Neil, I did not know about the discounts... I checked and I am sure I can get it cheaper than the $700.00 that they advertise, with discount. They do not offer the discount on the 220. Thanks for the heads up. Frank |

The Zumo 550 is nice and has the capability for XM weather, but the XM antenna is another couple hundred $ IIRC. What a ream job for a GPS that's already expensive. Then there's the XM subscription on top of that. However, when you're out in the middle of nowhere, with no phone signal, that XM stream would be mighty handy! |

Got the Zumo 550 at Bass Pro for under $400. If a non-geek like me can use it out of the box, you will be good to go. Water proof and vibration proof. I'm pleased with it so far. I got it before Homecoming. Works great in the other vehicles also. |

Thanks Vern, Man, that was a deal, I do not see it on their site anymore... If anyone sees one around that price please let me know. Frank |

I like the 550 Zumo with XM and the Best of Sirius...the buttons on the left make changing volume, channels, skip songs, menus very easy. custom Splash Screens here http://www.badweatherbikers.com/cgibin/discus/show .cgi?142838/538498 (Message edited by TwoBuells on October 12, 2010) |

Frank, I ran the last 3 years with a Zumo 450 on just about every bike I have owned. It is a must have for me at this time on any trips I go on. The 450 doesn't have bluetooth or any of the extras that the 550 does, but I don't have need of those things... I just need it to navigate and do it very well... the 450 does just that. |

Thanks Micah, my needs are simple: 1. Bluetooth 2. Lane changes 3. Water Proof And that is it. I know the 550 and the 220 fits the bill. I just need to find them at a reasonable price. BTW: Leaving tomorrow morning and heading your way. I will send you an email soon. Frank |

I've got an old Quest I've been running with for the past few years and I have been looking at upgrading as well. Love the Quest, but I also want something I can easily throw in a rental car when I travel for work and not have to switch up maps. I've been looking at the Nuvi 500 and 550, waterproof, touch screen etc, but can save $200 or more over the Zumos... I don't need bluetooth, XM and all of that crap, just something that can help me get down the road. |

Alex, I have the same thing. Works good for what I use it for (speed) but the few times I used it for direction I did not like looking down at it all the time. The miles to next turn is invaluable on these units. I am with you. I do not need XM Radio but I would like to have bluetooth. |

Twobuells, thanks for the link. I am going to have my phone linked to the Zumo but everything else. The Yeasu FTM-10 (maybe you have heard of it) will be linked to the Bluetooth headset. I am not big on music while riding but can just plug the ipod into the headset itself if needed. I am wondering something Twobuells... You have a KA callsign as do I. You must of been licensed about the same time I was... 1979???? Frank KA4JQZ |

Wow, 700? I paid 75 for my tomtom and it wortks good. Then again, not waterproof, never tried the bluetooth, but it does tell me what lane to be in. I figure for 75 buck (clearance) If it breaks I'll get a new one. other than more features (bluetooth waterproof ect) do the more expensiv3e ones work better/ |

JQZ got my call in 1988. I have not been active for the last 5 years or so. I really want to get some antennas back up. I have an Icom 706 in my Jeep Kenwood TS440 in the house with two 2570's a 2530 (220mhz) and a KW 241 with a bad final. and the coolest HT known to man, a KW TH-F7 (DC to Light)hi hi I did Motorcycle Mobile a few times on my HD (spit) Fatboy back in 1994. I have this old Icom full size 2m HT can't think of the model number but it puts out 7 watts. I had this speaker/mic in the ear bud. Worked ok a few times but I lost interest. Since I mounted my Droid Phone to the Uly I want to try that Scala Rider Bluetooth setup. I mostly listen to Sirius Talk Radio or music when I ride. |

I used the car cradle for my Droid. I drilled fours hole through it (amps pattern) and used a RAM mount to the handle bars. I bought a car mount for my Jeep and an extra cradle for the bike off ebay. Tom, which model Droid? I have the Droid 1 (motorola) Running a custom ROM and overclocked to 1.2ghz. Droidforums.net great tips.... (Message edited by TwoBuells on October 12, 2010) |

TFI, I know what you mean, my enthusiasm wains from time to time. Like I said I got my ticket in 79 and upgraded rather quickly. Of course the code requirement does not exist and it is all multiple guess and no drawing of circuits but whatever. The FCC needs to keep their money machine rolling like everyone else I guess. If you ever decide to use CW let me know. That is all I do anymore. 73 |
