The shop can't look at it until Friday morning. Seems they are all out at Boneville already. I am trying to get someone else to maybe check it out... but I don't want to get stuck up in the mountains Friday night with it below freezing... I might have to wait until 10 or Noon Friday to leave and make it a two day trip... grrrrrrrrrrrrr... It was a very cold and beautiful ride this morning... |

Or ride anyway and pull the fuse out so the circuit doesn't drain the battery. Of course, you have to find out which fuse. Maybe biker buddy can help you with that. |

Sauk Prairie HD (where I bought the M2) is gonna look at it tomorrow. They don't do Buells anymore, but said they would do this for me... they are half way between home and work... if they do find a problem with the gear wiring I will send the other shop a copy of the bill... we will see... just when you think you got it all down... blam... someone pulls the rug out from under ya... |

I didn't read anything but your initial post, but 3.5 hours from madison to Bloomington isn't that conservative. It's about right, but not conservative. |

Have you got gas stops mapped out, by any chance. If I manage to get away Friday I'd like to ride along before/after the Indy section. It would be easier to wait at a gas station than an off ramp! |

I think there are more extra hours added to the shorter time frames. Mapquest usually assumes the speed limit. The entire point of heading straight south to Bloomington/ Normal is to avoid the Chicago rush hour. I have done that PITA Chicago about three dozen times. It can be 1.5 hours from the edge of Chicago to the loop, or it can be 4 hours (which I got during some severe weather). Be more partial to Chicago if it were a Sunday morning. I have also had 3 hours between Madison and Minocqua, to 6 hours during the return trip on 4th of July weekend. It really depends on weather and traffic. If I end up behind a bad crash it will add hours and the entire plan is for nothing. Anyone know if California is the only state where lane splitting is allowed? |

Gas stops will be tough, on an as need basis. But you can drop me your number if I make it that way as planned. If I can't try the IB, then I will take my time too... |

I rode Peoria, Champaign, Indianapolis, Cincinnati, Lexington. It turned out to be a great route except for all the construction around Indy. Came back home through Chattanooga, Nashville, St. Louis. St. Louie was the longest city of the trip to get through. |

Char - hit a camping store (Dick's sporting goods or similar) and get a 1L MSR fuel bottle for camping stoves. It holds one liter of fuel - enough to save about 15 miles of pushing, should the need arise. I have mine mounted outside the Uly's saddlebags, in an operator's tube (do a search on Big Bad and Dirty forum, but here's a pic of mine - first aid on one side, fuel on the other)
...but I know time is tight for mounting it up, and you may be able to just toss it in with your luggage. They don't leak. Worst case, bungee it to the passenger seat. Strap on...no bra....damn, this is gonna be a fun time at TWO! |

On fuel bottles- A place called Sierra Trading Post has them on sale for a very good price, $3.17 each with the discount info below. http://www.sierratradingpost.com/p/,2963H_Brunton- Fuel-Bottle-1-Liter-Aluminum.html Use code ALVSEPT2KX for 20% off, and on the shipping page where it says special instructions, type in "gustave the crocodile" and they'll refund your shipping. They put a riddle in their catalogs each month for free shipping and that's the answer this month. This site has all sorts of great closeout camping and outdoor gear, well worth taking a look at for moto camping etc. Have fun! |

No Iron Butt today... I am completely exhausted from work and bike problems... still packing... I will try to make it to Tennessee or Kentucky today... leave by 8 or 9 AM... I had it all figured out, and the bike issue threw a real monkey wrench in there... it took an emotional toll that set me behind too much to focus... I can't even pack at this point... work has been a bear too... something I am working on that I am not even allowed to talk about... might have to avoid getting sick by going back to sleep for a few hours... |

Sorry about the circumstances, but Kudo's on a wise decision. Proper mental attitude is a huge part of a safe and successful endeavor, and being able to say no is every bit as critical as any other part of an effort. Ride safe, Have Fun! Dave Perhaps an Iron Butt attempt for the trip back?? |

Relax You're on your way. Relax Don't worry so much about what time it is, or what time it needs to be. Relax Don't get yourself all worked up. Take a 3%er tip: Disorganized & No agenda Relax and enjoy the ride All that other stuff will be waiting for you to get back, so, let it wait. It's time to have some fun! |
