One of the last rides of the season in the frozen north. Snow down 1500 feet. 39 degrees. LJM

The only thing I couldn't handle is the long off season in them parts. Of course snowboarding season would be exceptionally long. Looks like some great roads to travel. |

So when do you start riding in the spring up there? The wife is spending a semester in Fairbanks starting in Jan through the national student exchange. I'm going to drive up there with her and fly back. I'll visit at spring break time and then come help her drive back to WI in late May, early June. I was thinking about riding the bike up there and then trailering back with the truck. But, I was worried there would still be snow on the ground? Yes, no??? |

If you are coming in late May, early June you should be fine. The Yukon will be cold but snow should be gone everywhere. There is one high pass (name escapes me right now) that will be cold but May, June are more sunny than later in the summer so all in all, should be a good trip. Later in the summer we have lots of rain. If driving up in January, plan your gas stops. Not all the stations are open in the winter. And take cold weather survival stuff, warm clothes, blankets, sleeping bags, water, candle (you'd be surprised how much heat they generate in a closed car). But you may run into some really, really cold temperatures in January, like 60-70 below zero. Here in Anchorage, snow is melted off by April 1 - 15. A little colder in Fairbanks in the spring. Usually riding consistently by May 1. June is a great month to bike up here. Take a few days, drive down to Anchorage and to the Kenai Peninsula. And drop a line when you are heading through. Larry |
