Better to get somewhere later than expected than not get there at all. Chapel Hill and Suches will both be there whenever you roll in! Be safe and keep us posted on where you are. |

I can still ride along around Indy. Lemme know. It's nowhere near your goal, but I've got plenty of room if you get a late start and want to stay in Indy. I'm a little out of the way on the east side, but you can't beat the rate. It is a beautiful day for a ride!!! |

Just woke up again... time to start the day over... now I feel human... got the tank bag and my tool bag packed... just need to lay out the clothes, get them in the rear paniers... suit up and go... it is going to be clear and get into the 70's... should be perfect... Roger, I will give you a ring when I am about an hour out of Indy... |

Road construction in Illinois slowed her down quite a bit. Just left her after a late dinner on the south side of Indy. I figure by now she's fast asleep and will resume her trip bright and early tomorrow. FWIW, she was pretty satisfied with her sheepskin. |

So, day two ended up being an 'unintended detour' day as well... I made some good time out to south of Lousiville, only to realize an hour later I was on the WRONG HIGHWAY. I wanted to avoid another three hour side trip into Nashville... and ended up at... WTF... Lincoln's birthplace... but that was pretty cool with some nice back-roads heading east... then I reached 75 south to head to Knoxville... and I thought... What the heck, I am going to find some more twisties... the road, Highwy 90, into Cumberland Falls was a smash hit... except for the tourons that drive 5 UNDER the speed limit... But I just rode and rode and it was really fine, with the 80 plus degree weather, it seemed like a waste to spend a day like that on the interstate... I am in "Nowheresville" Kentucky.... right where you see Kentucky, Virginia and Tennessee meet. It is a foggy morning up here in the foothills of the Smokies... perfect!!! So the plan is to hammer down 25 East to 40 and then 40 into Ashville and on to Chapel Hill... hopefully when I hit HWY 40 EAST I won't be able to get lost anymore... but, eh, getting lost with nowhere to go is what vacation is all about, isn't it? |

Char- Hwy 70 thru Hot Springs will take you all the way into Asheville, just get off I40 at the Newport exit... Running "the gulch" on 40 might be faster, but you'll pucker up in those curves... Actually, from Hot Springs you can run south halfway down a great twisty secondary highway, then cut east on another, taking you into Asheville on yet another fun twisty road... time well spent!!! Lemme eat some breffix and I'll try to remember those secondaries... Have fun, keep the rubber side down!! |

I made it to Chapel Hill... kept thinking "Why is it taking me so long to get places?"... then I realized I actually ride 5 over the limit now... instead of barrelling down the road at 90 mph... I 40 was fun... except the weird thing is the tunnels gave me some messed up vertigo because my allergies are so bad... kind of disconcerting when it seems like the walls and the roof are moving around you... anyhow... few days to rest and relax and maybe a day trip to Wilmington before BTF... officially have 1130+ miles on the trip so far... |

Char, it wasn't vertigo, the walls and roof were moving, just very, very slowly. Every now and then they move rather suddenly. Have fun! |

That was the red ones, the blue ones make it feel like you're not moving. Avoid the brown ones (unless they have an M stamped on the side, you might read a W or even an E, they're all safe). |

86129squids: Sounds like you are talking about NC 209 towards Waynesville, then 63 east to Asheville ... The Waynesville-Marshall-Hot Springs loop using 209/63 is one of my faves. |

Suggestions for Chapel Hill NC to Suches GA??? I want to get an early start as it might take me twice as long as I planned... maybe hook up at I 40 and the Blue Ridge Pkwy and follow that south, maybe won't be so crowded on a Thursday? Maybe not... |

Squids: You're welcome. Thinking about Suches, at least to visit and say Hi ... Whatever: It's your trip, so enjoy yourself. If you have some time constraints, maybe pound the I-state to the Asheville area; then LOTS of choices. 19 through Cherokee, on to Franklin and south on 28, 23/74 to Franklin then proceed on 64, ect, ect. |

Plan is to head north tomorrow morning towards Pilot Mountain, then hook up on the Parkway and take a day and a half to meander into Suches... I am at my best friends from college, and she is married to another friend and they have two girls... 10 and 12... it is so nice here... and they are spoiling me... but I kind of feel like I have fallen into a parallel universe... we all left school 20 years ago, but I still feel like we are just kids... Going to talk to the 10 year old's class about geology and then hopefully hook up with a grad professor at Duke... head out in the morning... |
